4 Top Trends in Holiday Party Dresses

Deborah BolandDo you have a holiday party coming up and don’t know what to buy to look glam and on trend?  This is your chance to shine in some of the most beautiful cocktail dresses of the season. Stylist Mary Barrios fills us in on the latest trends.

Mary: The holidays are all about the sheen and glitz, and while dressing in sequins from head to toe like a Christmas tree is exciting for many of us, looking slim is at the top of the holiday wish list for all of us. Wishes can come true, at least fashionable ones anyway! Here are 4 “now” holiday party dress ideas to make you look slim and sparkling this magical time of year.

Classic Colors

Holiday Trend 1 – Classic Colors

Apple red and warm gold is a classic color combination this time of year.

If you want to look festive start with a gorgeous red dress like this one from Nicole Miller.  This is a classic style that you can’t go wrong with. It’s elegant and classy and it gently hugs your curves, camouflaging any tummy you may have with gentle ruching. The halter neckline is also very slimming at the top, especially for gals with broader shoulders.

To put a modern spin on this Christmas classic focus on the accessories! Try gold earrings, paired with lots of bracelets and a bold gold watch. Spiky accessories are  fresh and youthful, and thin chains have become more elegant than ever.

Pair this look with shiny golden shoes and you’ll be as perfect as a starry night.

Film Noir

Holiday Trend 2 – Film Noir

You can’t go wrong with a Film-noir inspired look.  Film Noir is trendy at the moment because there’s been a big revival of 50′s, vintage, party wear dresses.

Wear a vintage black lace dress, in an A-line or flared skirt silhouette for a slimming effect and a sophisticated holiday look.

Pair it with a satin white clutch, sparkling white heels and a pearl bracelet for some added charm. A sparkly black nail polish will ensure your look is fresh and modern.

Metallic Shine

Holiday Trend 3 – Metallic Shine

When the holiday party dress code calls for all out glam, a metallic cocktail dress will make you look like a goddess.

Don’t be afraid to  deck yourself out in   gold or silver sequins  and just for fun, top off your dress with a chic fur vest or  sexy bolero jacket.

Glitter-cluster heels, a light silver clutch and some silver or gold nail polish are pure Hollywood. Keep the earrings tiny and don’t add any more accessories to this look, it doesn’t need them with so much already going on.

Gem Colors

Holiday Trend 4 – Gem Colors

You’ll see a lot of beautiful holiday party outfits in gem colors this year. Cobalt, Emerald and Purple are hot. You can wear one color head to toe in slightly varying shades for a tone on tone look or  mix it up a bit. Whatever way you style it, these jewel tones are a modern, chic look.

Show your adventurous by wearing a bright blue dress instead of your standard black.

A royal blue wrap dress with a tie waist and V-neckline is sexy and very sophisticated (think Duchess of Cambridge engagement dress). It won’t go out of style, but for a trendy update, wear it with micro-studded matching heels, silver lace chandelier earrings and a silver pendant.

Complete this look with an emerald-green satin clutch. It’s a gorgeous, unexpected pop of color and glamour.

  1. I love a gorgeous red dress for the holidays, but with my auburn hair the color can fight with my tresses a bit–but seriously the ensemble with the red dress is call me! I also love the proverbial “little black dress”–you just can’t go wrong with a classic. Love all of these outfits though!
