A friend just sent this and we had to pass it along. The photo below was taken at a competition in June 2008. The competition was between 9 women for best makeover.
They had every possible beauty treatment available to them over a period of 12 hours before the contest.
Look at the before and after photos.. Conclusion …Behind every frumpy woman is a goddess.
Who doesn’t love black? It’s chic and sexy; makes you look thin, and you can wear it anywhere. But when it comes to building a fabulous wardrobe, are you stuck in a “black” hole?
We think so! Abundant Black Disorder (ABD) is a common wardrobe dysfunction that’s rarely spoken about. It can occur anytime in a woman’s life, but usually peaks at midlife. The symptoms: a closet full of black clothing and accessories, the irresistible urge to “buy it in black”, no matter what, and the feeling of being too fat or too visible if you wear anything other than black, black, black.
What women who have ABD don’t realize is, that an abundance of Black seriously cramps your style and makes you look old. How? After 40 too much black is notorious for draining the color from your already lighter, aging skin. Black hides your fabulous 40+ personality, while constantly dressing in black signals, ” I’m old. Don’t notice me. “…Sad!
We compare having ABD to going to an ice cream store and always ordering a single scoop of low-fat vanilla ice milk. It’s basic and practical, but it will leave you feeling bored and unsatisfied, sucking the joy from your life, and your looks.
How can you cure ADB? STOP being so terribly predictable. Perk up your looks and liven up your soul with a dash of color. Promise yourself not to buy anymore black for a very long time.
If that’s too drastic a change for you right off the bat, then look for outfits that combine black with a bold color. Here’s a few examples to ease you slowly out of black and into color:
Flower Power:
Floral prints are a huge trend this spring. Sheath dresses look polished on everyone. If you are bottom heavy try a sheath with a slightly wider A bottom. (Saks)
Black on Top:
Black makes you look smaller. So if you have a large bust or big shoulders and a small bottom, wear black up top and a brighter pattern/and or bright color on your bottom half to balance you out. If the black washes out your face a bit, add a touch of jewelry such as cute earrings to put some color by you cheeks. (Saks)
Color Block
Wear two blocks of color ( black and a bight) for a dramatic effect. If you are short and heavy, be careful as a horizontal line can chop you up making you look shorter and wider. Go for a monochromatic ( all one color) look instead. (Saks)
Trick the eye:
Patches of black at strategic spots such as the waist can create a waist where there is little. (Saks)
Add personality:
A simple pattern in a bright color adds life and personality to a black wrap dress, where there was none before. (Saks)
Modern way to wear color:
Even though this jacket is bold fuschia, the style is sporty and plain. Mix it with a plain black skirt the outfit would look deadly boring. Pair it with this contemporary pop art patterned skirt and the look is spirited and fresh. (Saks)
You usually see teal in the fall, but it seems to be everywhere this spring. That’s great news because it is one of the four most universally flattering clothing colors.
This deep blue-green shade highlights all skin tones. It goes well with neutrals, darker browns and blacks and is a good transitional color between winter and summer. Here’s a few teal outfits we saw and liked:
Basic and Beautiful:
We love the simplicity of this dress. Its clean lines are slimming and the belt highlights a nice wait. What this dress does cry out for is some great jewelry (maybe some wow earrings) and some fun, sexy shoes to liven it up. If sleeveless is not for you, try a cute fitted jacket overtop. (Nordstrom)
The hottest color in Handbags:
One of the biggest trends in accessories this Spring is purses in shades of Teal, electric blue and turquoise. This boho bag is relaxed and casual, just perfect for bopping round the mall or out with some friends for lunch. ( Nordstrom)
Poolside Teal:
Brown and teal give an exotic animal look to this swimsuit and cover-up combo and really play up her tawny skin. At the beach, in a sea of loud brightly colored bathing suits, you will stand out as cool and sophisticated in this teal shade.
Cock-”teal” Wear:
Teal is popping up in cocktail wear this Spring too. It’s a deep, rich color that works well for weddings, parties and other more formal special events . This faux wrap dress is great if you are pear shaped. The wide neckline will balance out your hips and make you look more proportioned.(Nordstrom)
Teal as an accent:
If you are not a big on wearing head to toe color, but want to bring a bit into your wardrobe, then thsi teal flat is a great way to do it. The cool snakeskin texture and multiple zippers give it just enough edge to make this elegant shoe most interesting!.(Nordstrom)
Traditional + Teal:
We know, we know..just a few posts ago we said we weren’t mad for plaid, but we accidentally came across this plaid shirt that we were happy to see had a little pizazz. Perky in teal with some ruching for better fit and cute cuffs, this would be a good choice for all you more traditional ladies who just love this tried and true print. (Nordstrom)
You don’t see a lot of difference at first, until you look down at her neck. She looks pretty good!
You know our stand on all of this; it’s such a personal thing. There’s no right or wrong. It’s all up to how you feel. We know some of you may disagree and that’s why we throw this post in. It makes for lively conversation.

It’s probably thanks to Michelle Obama that cardigans have become so popular, coming close to replacing jackets in many cases.
<<Remember her famous sparkle one, or
when Michelle wore a cardigan to meet the Queen?>>
We like cardigans for many reasons:
1) they’re comfy
2) they’re a great cover -up for our arms which are chilly because of all the sleeveless tops out there
3) cardigans hide any arm flab
4) they brighten up a plain outfit by adding texture, color and interest.
There are frumpy cardigans out there, for sure, but there are also so many cute ones to choose from… long, short, fitted, loose, in all kinds of knits.
Here’s a few we discovered that are only slightly different from the classic 1950’s type, but look totally modern today because of a simple tweak.
Sweet Sweater:
It’s called the Diamond disco sweater, and we agree this “disc go really well with dis skirt!” (LOL).. Just enough glam without being over the top. What a pretty complement to the floral skirt which is so in this spring. (Nordstrom)
Grrr..eat!
A sexy animal print and we love the modern color combo……… O.k. Here’s the “dump the frump” lesson for today.. the style of this sweater alone may scream old, but the mix of the brown and turquoise with a touch of yellow is what zips it up and transforms it into a hip and updated great find. (Nordstrom and Saks )
Ruffle:
Ruffles are in right now and this cardigan has just the right amount to look pretty but not baby- girlish on a grown up gal. Love this color! (Nordstrom)
Rosy touch:
Soft and romantic this feminine cardigan stand on it’s own with jeans or be dressed up with jewelry and a pretty skirt for a night out. (Nordstrom)
Modern Mix:
Coral and turquoise combine in modern floral pattern that brings warm skin tones to life. (Nordstrom)
Honeycomb:
Simple and elegant. Now isn’t this nicer than wearing a big old sweatshirt around the house? (Nordstrom)
We always get a kick out of hearing from you and finding out what you do to stay Fabulous after 40…. Karel wrote us with this story.
Hi Glam Gals,
Looking for energetic women over 40 who are still active? I have been ice-skating with my pal, Valerie for over 30 years and we continue to teach! I will be 48 this year! With the Olympics around the corner, we encourage adults to get on the ice! We look forward to hearing from your readers!
Karel Zubris
Diamond City Figure Skating Club, Wilkes-Barre, PA
P.S.
Right now, I am oldest coach in the group. (48) Here are some photos of me teaching.
This FAF reader still ice skates and help with the Special Olympics!
I even had the honor of presenting an honor to 2002 Olympic Figure Skating Champion Tara Lapinski for her charitable works when she first performed in Wilkes-Barre back in April 2002.
Don’t you sometimes get sick of that blatant sexy look everywhere you turn….. Movie stars with dresses cut down to their navels, women in magazine ads with stilettos and skirts that barely cover their bums and, skin, skin and more skin with nothing left to the imagination.
Where’s the mystery? Mystery is sexy, especially after 40 when too much skin on a mature body can look downright desperate.
That’s why when we were shopping online we fell head over heels in love with these pretty, ruffled tops that are so feminine, yet seductive they made us melt.
Here’ s our vote for a classy and pretty way to look sexy this this Valentine’s Day.
Hot Coral:
This color is pretty, and it will give you some life too. You’ll may want to pair it with a light neutral colored cardigan or wrap.
You can be covered up but still look very pretty and sexy. A great choice if you are self conscious about your arms.
Form fitting:
If you’ve been working hard at the gym and you want to show that off, this is a great pick. The turquoise color is universally flattering.
Causal and Cozy:
If you are planning on cuddling up at home this Valentine’s Day, or celebrating in a more relaxed way, then jeans and this soft ruffle top will be lovely.
Elegant and pretty:
Nothing is more feminine than a pretty bow and this one is perfect because it it looks very grown-up up and elegant. The mint green is a flattering choice if you have cool skin (pink undertones).
Poetic:
Be sure that if you are wearing soft ruffly tops like these that your hair and make-up are also soft, or you will ruin the look.
Hi Glam Gals,
Is plaid is an option over 40 and how it is best to wear it? I am a 41 Stay at home mom with a 8 year old and 3 ½ year old. I am trying to build a wardrobe to last, but also want to add some fun pieces. What do you think? ……………..Thank you. Nicole
Hi Nicole,
We’ve got to admit, we’re not mad about plaid, (a little too sporty for our taste), however that doesn’t mean that you can’t love it, and that it won’t look great on you if you are more the traditional type.
Here are a few plaids to consider, and a few plaids to definitely avoid!
AVOID!
…”But plaid is so cute”
Please, please – don’t any of you tell us that top is cute or we will have to make you an honorary member of the frump society.(LOL)
This is not Fabulous after 40 or any age, especially when your are carrying a few extra pounds. Plaids are busy. They make you look big, and the boxy fit, high neckline, drawstring waist, and tunic length of this top only add to the walking blanket look.
“But, what if I’m thin?”
Baggy is baggy after 40. This boyfriend lumber jack shirt look may be hot right now but the oversize nature of it sends the message I’m a little girl playing dress-up. It’s babyish and sexy at the same time. At 40+ this trendy look is extremely hard to pull off, no matter how fit you are.
INSTEAD
Go for Fitted
After 40 your body starts to soften up and you need some definition, so find a plaid shirt that is more slim lined and nips in at the waist. Also, to look more modern, try a more lively color combination.Traditional plaid colors (navy, forest green, gold, black etc) are usually pretty drab and can make you look tired and old.
AVOID
The Designer Trap:
Yes, It’s Burberry and it’s a status symbol, but who cares, because in this particular case the shirt is too sloppy and edgy to look anything but silly on a grown up gal. Leave it for your teenager.
INSTEAD
If you are truly in love with the Burberry plaid, and not just buying it for the designer label, then think about just using a plaid scarf or handbag to pump up an plain outfit. Using plaid as an accent gives you a very chic look.
If you like, and can handle more plaid, then try a modern twist like this fitted high contrast jacket which would look great with black jeans and a black top. It’s sporty, but elegant too, and just that little bit different to make it interesting.
AVOID
Stay away from teenage styles:
This top with it’s cutesy gathering and puffed sleeves looks like it should be paired with a pair of Daisy Duke cutoff jean shorts, and needs to stay right where you found it..in the junior department!
INSTEAD TRY
Pairing plaid with a sweater
Try to get past this girl’s baby face (just cover her face with your finger-why do they use such young models??) Now, imagine this combo on you with a cute pair of jeans.
The plaid top is simple, fitted and quite hip because of the simple ruffle detail, and it is an interesting shade of reddish brown. Paired with the chartreuse cardigan it looks fresh. Almost Michelle Obama inspired, wouldn’t you say? We know how she loves this green color. The sweater gives it some oomph and takes away from plaid overload.
OR, TRY THIS
Painterly Plaid
This is interesting and modern twist on plaid. It looks and feels more sophisticated. Pair it with a black cardigan.
BE CAREFUL OF
Matching Plaids:
This is a beautiful suit and would look lovely on most anyone at any age. But if you want to present as a little more hip and less formal you may think about breaking up this suit. You know, pairing the jacket with a single color pair of pants, or even with jeans for the weekend with a t-shirt underneath. When you look too perfect, it can be aging.
INSTEAD
Break things Up:
Here’s an example of what we mean. Plaid jacket and a black skirt gives this suit a less formal feel, but it is still very elegant. The 3/4 length sleeves are very flattering and allow you to have fun with some great jewelry. Oh, and don’t forget to smile.
DO
Classic with a twist
Hope you don’t get sick of us saying this, but it’s true. What could be a boring beige plaid trench is now a modern, little bit funky purple plaid jacket. The best way to wear this is to let the purple take center stage and accessorize in black.
EXPERIMENT
With something Dramatic
Forget the boring country girl plaid shirt and try something daring and dramatic like this chic cape. It’s classy, but not snooty
Are you sick of winter? We are, and there’s hardly been any snow yet!
It’s that time of year when JoJami and I look out our windows into the cold gray landscape and think, “We’ve got to get out of these heavy, dull winter clothes, or we’re going to suffocate.”
So, what does one wear to feel happy and alive, when it’s still freezing out there, and wearing bare sleeves and bare legs would look absolutely ridiculous?
Color… for one… something lightweight, but not silly thin.. and sleeves, preferably…. if you can find them!!! ( near impossible these days)
Enter Spring’s new bright, bold and graphic jersey shift dresses. Wow, did we get excited when we saw these online! They’re bursting with color, are in fun happy prints, and they have sleeves..yes!
Never mind that they’re showing them worn with bare legs and sandals. Just throw on a pair of dark tights and cute flats and you’ll be good to go.
And they’re so comfy…… the perfect thing to wear when you’re still working on shedding those few extra pounds left over from Christmas, so you can be ready for bathing suit season. Here are a few of our favorite picks from Nordstroms:
Paisley gone crazy:
A modern update on an old fashioned pattern makes traditional look hip. Brown with white is an ideal color combo to transition into Spring. (Nordstroms)
Edgy:
Black and electric blue give this one cool sharpness. You don’t need jewelry. This dress does all the talking.(Nordstroms)
Caribbean:
Can’t you just feel that tropical breeze? This one reminds us of an island getaway at March break! (Nordstroms)
Arsty:
Looks like someone took the kid’s Spiro Giro to it. The rounded neckline is flattering to all. Graphic and gorgeous! (Nordstroms)
60’s vibe:
Never say never! It’s short, but if you have long shapely legs this Tory Burch dress worn with thick, dark tights and flats or cute boots, will make you look chic.(Nordstroms)
On the Border:
Beautiful Bordering at the V neckline, sleeves and hem give this an extra punch. For those who don’t like boatnecks, the V is a great option. It makes any neck look longer and your body look leaner!(Nordstroms)
Sometimes we meet women and tell them we write a blog called Fabulous after 40,they say, ” I’m well over 50, or I’m over 60, can I visit your blog?”
The answer is, “of course!” We’re here to encourage 40, 50, 60 and beyond to dump the frump and have some fun with fashion.
40 is just the starting point where your body starts to change, your lifestyle changes, it get harder to find places to shop and the role models get fewer and farther between.
So, just in case you gals over 60 may have been feeling left out.. take a look Helen Mirren here, and other inspiring celebrities from a great post we just ran across about the SAG awards, and looking
The 75 year old star looked beautiful as ever a the 2010 Golden Globe awards. Many are wondering, just how does Sophia Loren manage to look so fab?
Whatever she does, it is working – minus the rainbow glasses which she should lose!
One thing we’ve noticed in the last couple of decades is that Sophia has a little trick of lightly covering her shoulders, arms and sometimes decolletage with sheer fabric.
This gives the illusion of bareness, which is sexy, but in reality you are covered up and not exposing crepy skin or aging arms.
Smart!
What else looked great? Check it out below…
Sandra Bullock looked vibrant in this gorgeous shade of purple.
Helen Mirren- elegant style, fabulous fit, but she is fair and this black washes her out.
Julianna Moore- interesting choice, but looks like a a shower curtain sewn up the middle. We like the shoes but they look too heavy with this dress and drag it down.
Loved the color of the dress with her auburn hair, but the one shoulder style makes her look like a wrestler.

Makes sense…Just think of babies with their plump, round plump lips. Softer bigger lips are more youthful….but only to a point!
Your lips have got to match your face!
The problem is many women see their lips thinning and rush out and get lip fillers only to end up with “trout pout”…you know, those crazy lips that make you look like you’ve been sucking on a sour lemon and had an allergic reaction! Totally bizarre, unnatural and not youthful or attractive at all.
Just look at Nicole Kidman.
Daryl Hannah
Melanie Griffith
Cher
The list goes on… Can fillers like this ever work? Are we being unfair and just highlighting the bad cases?
If you’ve ever had your lips enhanced, let us know how they worked out. Did it work for you? Would you do it again?
Our feeling is, what’s so wrong with thinner lips? Just like, what’s wrong with smaller breasts? They’re beautiful and elegant. If you keep your lips moisturized and soft, use pretty lip glosses and soft lipstick shades, they’ll look beautiful.
This frenzy around having to have humongous breasts and lips the size of overinflated party balloons is actually gross. It’s bound to pass in a few years, and then we’ll all be looking back and laughing at how trashy and cartoon-ish women looked.
Bigger is not always better. Subtlety and elegance is the key to looking fabulous in Chapter 2 of life.
We’ve had a lot of emails from you complaining that years of wearing high heels have left you with very sore, aching feet. Good news, there may be a solution. Check out this article we just read on:
As we age we start getting dark raccoon -like shadows under our eyes and blotchy skin with brown patches. Smooth even toned skin can help you drop ten years. A little dab of concealer under your eyes, on brown patches and in those marionette folds around the mouth, for example, can really soften things up, even if you don’t want to wear foundation over top.

Here is a great fashion question from one of our readers: Dear Glam Gals, Wondering what handbags you would consider “old lady” and which would be considered more youthful…..thanks!L. C. Vandercook Hi L.C. We had fun looking for some good examples to share with you. Here are our Do’s and Don’ts
Example
Don’t
Do
This bag on the left is too stiff and old lady like, plus it’s boring beige.
See how the bag on the right is more relaxed and soft. That’s what you want. Soft is youthful and the color adds life! (Nordstroms)
You see these bags like this one the left all the time on older women. These bags look heavy and tired. Do you want to look heavy and tired too?
Try shiny black patent leather with white piping instead for a fresher, up to date look. (Black House White Market)
Patchwork may be in, but over 40, sorry, it looks like you’ve taken up quilting.
Try a single bright pop of color with a classy touch of hardware for a more powerful chic look. (Saks)
Red is always cheery and can be sporty mixed with tan or brown, but this bag on the left has a boring shape making it look ho-hum.
Instead, try this cute one on the right. It’s got a less uptight shape, is also more matte, so more sporty and the tassels are a great stylish. Tally ho! (Nordstroms)
A lot of gals 40, 50 and beyond seems to be getting our message that “Life is too short to be Frumpy”. Sure, we’re all getting older… and it’s more challenging to keep up “the maintenance”, but the rewards are worth it!
Vena looked fab in her striking shawl and artsy jewelry
Just look at these gals I met at a New Year’s Day party who range from 49- 56 and look stylish and fabulous. They know that when you look good, you feel good and life is so much more fun! And believe me, these gals were fun!
One thing I noticed right off was their jewelry…. big, bold and colorful. It added so much personality to their outfits.
Vena was wearing a gorgeous matching necklace, bracelet and ring designed by Quebec artist Anne Marie Chagnon. Anne Marie sells her unique jewelry worldwide and was commissioned by Cirque de Soleil to do a special collection for their Dralion show.
Marianne looked fit and fab in a figure flattering v-neck long sweater and leggings, accented by striking silver and turquoise necklace and earrings.
Marianne looked hip and sexy
Suzie's fitted sweater and earrings
Suzie looked darling in her mauve waist cinching ski sweater and dangly silver ball earrings.
Also, look at how great their hair looked. All great cuts and fab color that make them look Age-mazing!
So ladies, the message here is, if you’ve always enjoyed fashion, don’t stop just because of a number. Don’t make your age an excuse to give up on yourself. Enjoy your life.
What a year! We’ve blogged about thousands of topics this year, and several inspirational, motivational, controversial, and just plain silly posts have gotten our readers’ attentions.
This week, we’re looking back on our most commented-on posts of 2009.

The cosmetic surgery debate continues…
There’s a good article over at Entertainment & Showbiz.com that says filmmaker Cheryl Hines, who directed Meg Ryan in “Serious Moonlight,” says she has no problem with older Hollywood stars getting cosmetic surgery.
“If it makes you happy, do it. I don’t care. Whatever works,” says Hines.
Now we’re putting that question to you…

“Hi there G.G.’s!
I’d love to know what you think about the whole tights/pantyhose/knee high dilemma. When is a woman too old to wear tights, as in black, opaque tights or colored opaque tights? If she is too old for tights, do you recommend
pantyhose? To me these just look dated and frumpy. What’s the solution?”…

How low is too low? What is age appropriate when trying to dress and be a little sexy when you are over 40?
We ran this photo of a lovely woman in her late 40’s recently, wearing this overall conservative outfit, except the blouse was low cut.
In the comment section, one of our readers wrote in, “Can you please address the question, how low can you go when it comes to dressing after 40?”…

“Hello ladies,
I have a question about turtlenecks:
They used to be my go-to item – especially in black. I would wear one practically every day in the winter. Well, now that I am 42, they don’t look so hot on me at all. I feel like they highlight that little bit of loose skin right
under my chin and cheeks that you can barely see otherwise. When I see other women I think this about them too, yet everyone still wears them. Is it one of those things that you just suck up and still wear as you get older even though it doesn’t look so hot?…”

They were Fabulous After 40 on the red carpet last night at the 2009 Academy Awards Show!
We saw plenty of unattractive, trendy, mermaid style strapless dresses on the younger gals, but it was the classic and elegant gowns that Hollywood’s “seasoned” stars wore that made us want to stand up and cheer!
There’s been lots of buzz about Demi Moore on the net lately. First there were nasty comments about her Age defying, wrinkle free ads for her new perfume, “Wanted”.
The gloves are off and she’s fighting mad! ” I’m 47, How am I supposed to look?” she angrily twittered back.
Do you think Demi should have even bothered to respond to comments about how she looks for her age? Has she set herself up for all this by trying to stay so youthful, or are there just a lot of jealous people out there? Tell us what you think.
These gals look Age-mazing, even though we all know that many of them work out like crazy, and have even had cosmetic surgery to help.
Still, we can’t help but look and think, that with some hard work, we might be able to do the same. It got us wondering….
Do you look as fit and fab after 40? If so, how have you managed to do it? We want to hear from you!!
If you’re proud of your 40+ body, please let us in our your secrets for looking so great so we can share it with our readers. We’d love to feature you.
Just send us an email with your photo; tell what you eat, how much you exercise, and anything else you want us to know, and you can be our inspiration for 2010!
What’s worse than dressing too old and frumpy? …Dressing like you’ve shopped in your teenage daughter’s closet! There’s a fine line between looking fabulous or foolish. Here are some Christmas cocktail dresses we found to illustrate the point. (All dresses are from Nordstroms)
Example
Don’t
Do
Red satin is a bold and dazzling choice so be sure to wear it with class.
When you are young and firm you can get away with most anything, but after 40 more coverage up top and a longer length skirt will ensure you don’t end up looking like aging cocktail waitress.
Baby Doll dresses have been popular in the last few years but on a grown up gal will make you look like you are playing dress-up.
You can still enjoy the ruffle look by wearing a dress with simple clean lines and no cutesy short or puffed sleeves.
The draped look can be very elegant if it’s not overdone. Less is more if you are 40, 50, or beyond.
We love these big collar dresses because they can put beautiful emphasis up by your face.
But at midlife you need to keep this look understated. Not too bright, short or exaggerated. Caution: don’t even go near this look if your arms aren’t in good shape!
What gal can’t resist a bit of sparkle, but this mini on the left with it’s winged shoulders will make a woman 40 or better look like an desperate fashion victim.
We prefer the shift on the right with only a hint of shimmer peaking out from behind some sheer material. You can have fun with this trend, but not in a garish way.
Grrr.. need we say more? If you like animal prints you might as well be a sexy cougar, rather than a baby cub.
Pretty in pink? You can be if you choose to express the color in a sophisticated way.
Keep the cut clean, lean and modest. Stay away from the prom queen look.
Bows. They’re tricky but they’re in style.
Forget the strapless, mini style and go for the regal Jackie O style. The tailored bow on the model on the right gives you much more presence and power than a floppy satin one.
There’s a lot of green out there and it looks fabulous this Christmas.
Thin dress straps look lovely on a gal with perfect shoulders and decolletage, but after 40 they are too harsh. Also, avoid youthful fashion statements like these heavy black hose paired with a cocktail dress.
Opt for a dress like this one on the right with its stunning portrait neckline. It flatters most figures, especially 40+ ones that have experienced a little middle age spread because it balances out hips and shoulders.
If you want to go sheer, do it in a tasteful way. Just a hint will do you. Be sure the rest of you is well covered up.
