Hi Glam Gals, I am 69, petite, currently wearing a size 2. My grandchild is getting married this Summer. The wedding will be in a church with a reception later in the day. I just purchased this eggplant ruched dress and I would appreciate your honesty about whether it works.
Thanks Mary
Dear Mary,
Yes, We love the X-scape beaded ruched dress from Nordstrom and think it will look beautiful on you since you’re Petite. ( left click on dress to see enlarged version)
Normally we would not recommend a dress with a lot of rushing because it can make anyone over a size 4 appear heavier than they really are in photos. We suggest you take a photo of yourself in the dress and see if you like the way you appear. This is key because things don’t always look the same in a photo as they look in person.
Below are some other dresses we found that we like for any of you other ladies out there who might be going to a wedding and are not sure what to wear.
Lovely in Lace! Who says they don’t make dresses with sleeves anymore? We found a beauty. It’s an Adrianna Papell Lace overlay dress with fringed eyelash trim and scalloped edge. The boat neck is great for pear body types with narrow shoulders. This neckline will balance you out.(Nordstrom)
Twinkle! Dainty and delightful this Kathy Hilton cream sheath softly sparkles without stealing the show. (Nordstrom)
Breezy and Easy! You’ll feel feminine in this Adriana Papell Iridescent Chiffon Petal Gown with chiffon overlay, not to mention the empire waist on this dress is a good way to hide a bit of a tummy.(Nordstrom)
Fabulously Fuchsia! This bright Metallic Ruffle Jacket with Sash by Adrianna Papell is an elegant choice when you want to be more covered up.(Nordstrom)
Fashion Forward! The one shoulder look is the hot cocktail dress of the year. You’ll look stunning in this X-scape ruched satin number. Don’t you just love the rust color? It’s so warm and rich. This would be great for an early fall wedding so if you are going to one, scoop this up now. (Nordstrom)
Shine On! This classy black JS Boutique chiffon dress with its embellished jewel waistband and cape like sleeves make a dramatic statement. Black is always the perfect choice for an evening wedding. (Nordstrom)
It’s a wrap! This soft and sensational Maggie London Stretch Satin dress is a lovely choice for a wedding. It’s feminine and dreamy in this dusty shade of mauve. (Nordstrom) Have you bought a dress to wear to a wedding recently? Send us a photo of you in it and we’ll post it, Glam Gal! info@fabulousafter40.com
My garden is full of robins, which got me thinking about one of my favorite buys ever, my robin’s egg blue spring coat.
Like a trench coat, this double breasted “Jackie O” style is a classic. I’ve had lots of wear out of it over the years.
It’s a great example how the right color can make all the difference.
In the color analysis world, I am a “SPRING” which means I look best in light, warm, clear colors of a spring garden.
(Can you imagine this coat in black on me? It would wash the life out of me)
How is your spring coat shopping going?
Do you need a new one? Here’s a look at a few of our favorites that might work for you:
Sound the Sirens!
You’ll look red hot in this Kenneth Cole New York Walker Coat. It’s flattering for all body types. (Nordstrom)
Piping Hot!
The black piping on this double-breasted Kate Spade New York Topliner trench coat is very in at the moment. The beauty of this detail is that the vertical piping creates a long slimming line making you look taller and thinner.(Nordstrom)
Easter Egg Blue
You can’t help but feel happy in this cheery blue Kate Spade’s Katarina coat. Its clean lines, collarless neckline and simple A-line fit make it modern choice. But wait, there’s a sweet secret…a vintage print lining! (Nordstrom)
Green with Envy
If you like the look of a traditional trench but want to liven things up a bit, then go for this London Fog Hooded Trench Coat in soft green. Betcha everyone you meet will be asking,”Where did you get your coat?” (Nordstrom)
Cool Collar
Fashion forward and fabulously cool, this navy blue Ali Ro Short Sleeve Anorak gleams with golden hardware. Love the chic collar!(Nordstrom)
Did you buy a spring coat. Email us a photos and we’ll post it!
I have somewhat narrow shoulders that looked good when shoulder pads were in style. Since shoulder pads are not used so much now, what styles in tops and jackets should I wear to make my body look more balanced?
Thanks, Sharon
Hi Sharon,
Ah, those shoulder pads. They worked wonders didn’t they, making everyone look like they had the smallest waist and most balanced hips. Only problem, if you wore shoulder pads today you’d look pretty silly (unless you were trying to make a dramatic high fashion statement)
If you are narrower on the top and wider on the bottom (pear shaped) and want to balance your figure, then here are some tops that will broaden your shoulders in a more modern way:
Bateau (Boat) Neckline
This type of neckline, that is high and cuts straight across, will make your narrow shoulders and chest seems broader. Horizontal stripes also create that visual width and so you get a double shot of looking more balanced up top with this cute stretch top by Michael Kors (Nordstrom)
Shirts that sit Right on the Shoulder
Shirts with collars will also make you look broader up top, but be sure the shoulder seams sits right at your shoulder for a crisp fitted look. This Tory Burch Military shirt is is a good example of that. The epaulettes also help give your shoulders more authority and definition. An excellent choice (Nordstrom)
Cap Sleeves
Remember the goal is to extend the line of the shoulder and a cap sleeve does just that. This Patterson J Kincaid lace top with its raw edge is a pretty, relaxed look. (Nordstrom)
Wide lapels, collars, straps
If you buy a jacket choose one with a wider lapel to make you look bigger through the chest and shoulders. The same idea applies for tops. This feminine teal blouse with the wide ruffle has the same effect as a wide lapel. Also, the ruching at the shoulder adds volume and width up top. If you are choosing between a sleeveless top with a skinny straps or sleeveless top with a wide straps, always go with wide straps to beef up your shoulders. (Talbots)
Flutter Sleeves
Tops like this Halogen Flutter sleeve top with its voluminous sleeves and a banded waist give the illusion of wider shoulders by creating an inverted triangle shape. There are lots of these types of tops out there now. See which ones work best for you. Hint- A patterned top or embellishment at the neckline also helps draw the eye up to make you look more proportioned up top.
Puff Sleeve
Puff sleeves will definitely make your shoulders look wider. Only problem is many puff sleeve tops look rather junior on a mature woman. Try some on and ask yourself, “Does this look too little girlish?” This one we’re showing by Halogen has a sophisticated print and might just work for you. ( Nordstrom)

Call it a jelly belly, muffin top or men-o-pot, your midlife tummy can be a pain to hide.
The good news is that when it comes to downplaying this annoying spot through your choice of clothes COLOR can be your best friend. Here are three ways to wear color to look slimmer and trimmer.
1) Dark Colors are always more slimming than light colors
Wear dark colors where you are heaviest like the tummy. Why? Dark colors appear to recede and light (or bright) colors appear to advance. If you have a big tummy it makes sense to wear a dark color across your stomach to visually shrink it. Black, navy, dark brown, gray and burgundy or any other dark shade works well. When buying a color block dress or top make sure the darkest color block is at the tummy. ( dress: www.simplybe.com)
2) Monochromatic dressing – Dressing in different shades of any single color elongates your body making your tummy less noticeable.
3) A column of color works wonders to make you look slim and trim. We love this trick. Wear a darker color head to toe to downplay your tummy. Then throw on a bright jacket or sweater to give you that much needed pop of color by your face. With your jacket open and the long dark column of color exposed all people will notice is your cute bright jacket. No one is looking at your tummy. ( Red sweater black top and pants- Rachel and Zoe -Nordstrom)
Somewhere in between stripes and tribal prints is the zigzag. This spring the popular Missoni inspired pattern is flying off the store racks. It’s bold, it’s bright and it takes personality to wear this look.
The best ways to show off this pattern?
Wear a solid column of color, such as all blue top and pants, with a zigzag cardigan over top. The cardigan can take center stage and the column of color will make you look slim and trim.
Not crazy about a lot of pattern but want to gt in on the trend? Then try a zigzag bangle bracelet or a shoe with a this hip print.
On the other hand, if you love the fun and funky spirit that zigzag communicates look then go for a dress – long or short, but go easy on accessories as the pattern is already busy enough.
And, of course, white jeans are hot and make the perfect canvas for a bright chevron top. You’ll look like you are a walking piece of art.
Have you bought anything in the zigzag/chevron print? Do you even like it -Yes or no?
Our reader Jeri is a great example of how you can look Fab after 40 in a one shoulder!
Hi Deborah and JoJami,
Is a black one shoulder top appropriate for a 50+ woman if paired with something simple like a skirt, sleek ankle pant . What about a one shoulder dress? I saw this trend in an ad on your website, and I see it in stores too, and don’t know if I should buy yet another item I might look ridiculous wearing. If wearable, I think it would be a fabulous warmer weather option for older women now that many of us have arms that are not display worthy.
I know, I know, we should embrace our bodies, but I don’t enjoy looking at my own bulges, cellulite and crepey arm skin. I’ve seen the crepe even on the skinniest and fit older arms. If you can bare arms and not feel bad about it- more power to you, but I can’t go there. My friend’s daughter calls the extra weight on the arms–Puddin Bags- as if the problem isn’t bad enough.
Thanks for any help, Roxanne.
Hi Roxanne,
The top in the ad (left) is not actually a one shoulder top. It’s a cut out shoulder top and is certainly age appropriate for the over 40 or 50 set, however it does not answer the question, “Will this look good on me?” If you have heavy arms, or arms with extra skin, you are correct in assuming that this top will not look good on you if it squeezes your arms too tightly. You’ll need to try it on to see if it holds your arms in or if it squeezes them through the holes. All arms are different and you will not really know unless you try. The good news is that you seem to be aware of what suits your body and that is the first step in dressing stylishly.
As for baring your entire arm in a one shoulder top or dress, we think a lot of women worry too much about this. Naturally your arms aren’t going to be as buff as they used to be after a certain age, but that doesn’t mean you have to hide them. The one shoulder is a great way to bare some skin and look sexy, while still remaining elegant.
Above is a photo that our reader Jeri sent in. She looks stunning in her one shoulder dress and there are lots of gals 40, 50 and beyond out there who will too! Try one on and see how you feel.
