Leave this look to the younger gals!
Dear Glam Gals,
I am 52 and have a question about wearing capris/shorts. I have a black pair that come right above my knee. I was wondering for spring since my legs are still pale, is it ok to wear hose with them to work? If so what color would you recommend.
I can see wearing black on black during winter, but not sure how to handle this at spring, since I am not ready to go without anything on my legs until they get some color.
Teresa
Hi Teresa,
It sounds like you are asking if you can wear hose with long shorts aka Bermuda shorts. Just to clarify, Capris are longer and come down to the mid-calf or to your ankles.
The short-shorts with hose trend has been a popular one in the fashion magazines but we think this look is just too young for us over 40 gals!
Bermuda shorts are casual attire and meant to be worn with bare legs. Adding hose is a big no-no and can actually age you. Bottom line, hose or nor hose, we would not recommend wearing above the knee shorts to work, it just is not professional at any age.
However if you have some dressy Capris you want to wear hose with, make sure to select hose that are extremely sheer and the same shade as your legs.
Here are some examples of how to wear your Bermuda shorts and Capris this coming Spring, 2012:
| Capri Leggings.(Nordstrom) This is a thin legging that comes to the mid calf. To be worn with a long top and wedges or flats. No hose. |
 |
Say No to shoes with straps! Shoes with straps do not work well with Capris. However, the nude color blends with skin tone and looks better than the black. (Nordstrom) |
 |
For a dressier look, these Capris are on the longer side and look nice with a closed toed shoe (sheer, nude hose is optional) (Nordstrom) |
 |
Be aware of your leg shape. The style known as Berumda shorts are meant to be worn more casual. They will look best with flats, sandals or a low wedge. No hose, please! If you have wide knees you will look better in shorts that come down a little longer.Self tanner will give your legs instant color, if you feel you need it. |

evening out on the town in NYC. So we gave her some ideas and guidelines and sent her shopping. She then sent us photos of her top 4 choices and we picked the simple, silk, DKNY number. Here is her follow-up letter:
Dear Glam Gals,
- I wore the turquoise/green dress you suggested and got a new black belt. The party was very crowded and dark as a cave, however since my dress was colorful, it was a huge hit. The birthday girl took one look at me and screamed ” You look amazing!” I felt comfortable and confident in this dress and much more relaxed and festive than if I had worn something else. I think the key to this dress was that it was a simple comfortable style in a soft fabric but a BOLD color. It felt appropriate but not that I was trying too hard to be fashionable and young. In NYC these days, cocktail means dresses and only older women wear pants!
(P.S. As I was getting dressed, I almost lost my nerve to wear the green dress. I put on a pair of skinny black pants and a beige cashmere cami and evening cardigan. When I looked in the mirror, I felt the energy drain out of me. I threw them off, put the green dress back on and had an amazing time. If I had worn my usual black and beige, I would have looked and felt invisible.)
Thank you so much for all you’re amazing advice and support.
xoxo Deb
Hi Deb,
So glad you didn’t chicken out and wear black!! Sounds like you had a wonderful time! BTW…we came upon another photo of your dress, just accessorized a little more casually. Just think, now you can dress it down and wear it to your next networking event and have 2 dresses for the price of one!
Cheers,
The Glam Gals
SO… Deb was thrilled with this photo and just so happened to have a black jacket already in her closet. Here she is in her dress, accesorized casual and dressy.
We suggest that she could even try a brown belt and leopard shoes! Wow…that could be fun!

Here's Deb in her DKNY silk dress and nude hose, ready for a night out on the town!

Dressed down with a black jacket and opaque hose, Deb can now wear it to work or a networking event.
Hi Glam Gals,
I have been invited to a birthday party for a women I met through work. She is in her early forties, it will be held in her fabulous NY penthouse apt and there will be a DJ. Other guests will be doctors as well as people in publishing and TV. Time will be from 8pm-12pm, so I’m guessing it will be everything from club to cocktail attire. I am over 50 and in the past have always worn black to parties like this but just end up feeling invisible. Help! I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard to be young and sexy, but I don’t want to seem too boring to talk to.
Thanks so much!
Hi Deb,
We know that in NYC the trend is to just wear black to everything. However, because this party is going to have a DJ you will probably see some sparkles and lots of high heels! When you’re over 40, sparkles can age you, so instead we think you should go for a silk dress in a pretty color and then accessorize it with a chunky necklace.
Dear Glam Gals,
Thanks for your suggestions. I went out shopping to several stores including a resale shop, so here are my four options for the party:
(FYI I can’t wear higher heels because of foot problems, so I can’t use great shoes to amp up the look. Bummer.)
| Red Dress:This is by Agnona an Italian designer that I got at my favorite designer resale shop.Normally $2000, I paid $90. Its made of lightweight wool, very Jackie O, but kind of stiff for a party with dancing.

BLack Dress:
This is another designer resale find - normally about $1000, that I got for $50. It’s a very standard LBD in a heavy weight crepe. I’ve lost some weight so it looks a little big – and dull.

Dear Glam Gals,
I know that you both like to shop boutiques and finer department stores but I find that often the sales people sometimes seem to hover over me and make me feel pressured to buy something. What can I do to feel more comfortable shopping in these types of places?
Janet P. ~ San Francisco, CA
Hi Janet,
We are going to answer your question with one of our own recent run in’s with a pushy sales person. It all started out innocently enough… I (JoJami) was eating lunch at an outdoor cafe, when a lovely woman dressed up in a
sassy, chic outfit came up to me with a flyer and said, ”I’m from the boutique next door and we are having a big sale. Won’t you come and see what we have… and by the way, here is a coupon for $25.00 in free merchandise.”
Well, as you can imagine, my adrenaline started flowing, so I gulped down my food, paid the bill and was over there in a flash!
As soon as the gal with the flyers spotted me she smiled and cooed, “Are you looking for anything special?” ”Yes” I replied, “I’m in dire need of a new pair of shorts.” With that said, she quickly got to work, handing me two pair of shorts, several dresses, pants and tops, too! Before I knew it, I was whisked off to the dressing room that was brimming with clothes just waiting to be tried on.
Now, I need to stop here and give you a little back story… You see, I’m currently living in a motor coach and traveling around the country and really have no closet space to speak of. So, anything I buy these days has to be something that I really, really need. In the past, I have always prided myself on being super picky and not buying anything frivolous but because of my current space constraints I have to be “hyper” picky and laser focused.
OK…back to the story…. Read more
Ready to swing into spring and need a little help finding some mouth watering sweet new jeans?
You might have noticed that many of the stores are lining their shelves with a wide range of colorful jeans. Well, it will feel like spring has come early this year for you if you win a pair of these colorful and comfy Fabrizio Gianni jeans!
Deborah and I recently had the opportunity to try some of their jeans and boy were we blown away! Picking them up they felt light as feather. Oooh, as we slid them on we noticed a bit of stretch and that the rise was not too high or too low. We think they are one of the best fitting jeans we’ve tried! (It must be that “hidden” elastic in the waistline, one of their unique design features!)
Then of course there are all the colors to choose from….Oh my, what’s a girl to do??? Thanks to team Fabrizio Gianni for awarding our contest winner Rosemary R. a $189.00 shopping spree and add a pair of these babies for their wardrobe!
