Can Colorful Shoes Make You Look Young and Modern? Part 1

It’s been a long time since shoe buying has been so much fun. This spring’s shoes are colorful and crazy and many of you have told us you want to buy a pair.

So what’s holding you back? Are you unsure about whether colorful shoes are age appropriate after 40?

If you’ve come close to buying a pair, but turned back from the cash register counter at the last moment because you thought you’d better stick to something neutral and safe, then read on.

Here’s our take on this season’s rainbow of shoes, with ideas for what to wear them with so you look hip and chic!

WEDGES

When you want to go high, but be comfortable, wedges are a good bet. This cute red patent shoe with its striped wedge has a slightly nautical feel to it. So why not pick up on that theme?

yellow-sundressThis wedge shoe would look great with a navy, black, white or a cheery yellow sundress like this, that is lighthearted and summery.
blue-washed-snakeskin

Electric blue is popular this season, but can be hard to wear because it sometimes comes off as heavy and harsh. This shoe captures the color trend without being overpowering. Love the combination of blue washed snakeskin and a rope wedge which makes this shoe modern and interesting.

linen-blend-scooped-neck-drOne of the easiest and prettiest ways to wear the new blue is to pair it with something white like this tidy linen blend scoop neck dress by Elie Tahari. Add jewelry, like some chunky blue and silver beads, and you are all set.

  1. It would be nice if they’d show a few more of those exact same dresses just below the knee. Knees are so often better when sitting. Control over what we reveal and when we reveal it please!

Not everyone over 40 has bad knees. Thanks for letting us know it’s okay to where a shorter hem, on occasion.

I love shoes and I’m really opening myself up to more colors then the standard black/brown/tan/nude. I’m currently on the hunt for a pair of teal, yellow, orange and green shoes as well as multicolor and animal skin.

My experience is straight and short do not sit well…literally – short dresses get much shorter when you sit down. I have found that a straight dress needs to come at least to my knee cap in order to not show the ‘pantyline’ on my hose when I sit down! No, I don’t always wear hose, but it gives you a visual of how much shorter short can get when sitting!

Colorful, sassy, sexy shoes are a great way to add fresh, sophisticated style to an over 40 wardrobe. What a wonderful way to show off your legs!

  6. Hi Dina,
Thanks for your thoughts! After 40, our legs and chest are 2 of the last that show age, so you are so right to show them off.
I had a client this week, that recently lost 30 pounds and she is only 5 feet tall, so you can image the change she has had to make in her wardrobe. One thing I noticed is that she loved wide legged pants. However, what probably looked great on her 30 pounds ago, now swalled her up. I got her to try some tight straight legged jeans and she looked like she just lost ANOTHER 10 pounds! Also, she has been able to buy some shoes that were a little more delicate and sexy, to go with her slimmer look!

  7. Hi Laura,
Yes, we must be aware of how we look sitting as well as standing. Good idea to try it out in the dressing room, before buying a skirt or dress and make sure that you can maneuver in it comfortably.
    Cheers!

  8. Dear Budge Chic,
Good for you to look to add some zest to your wardrobe ! Please share with us your finds…. we would love to see them!

  9. Dear Glam Exchange,
Yes, we do not want to be prudish on this subject, just realistic. Many women still have great legs because they are working out or have good genes.
Why put a number on when you have to stop looking sexy!
One note of cautions, just please make sure to look in the mirror and be realistic. We age so slowly, that we might not realize that our knees are not what they used to be. However, if they are still looking good….GO FOR IT!
    Cheers,

  11. P.S. as far as length goes… most of those models are very tall, fortunately, so when you go to the store and if you are average height, they will hit lower on the knee! Why they put these dresses on Amazon women, really does everyone a disservice!

Hi! I’m 49 but mistaken to be at least 10 years younger and I LOVE high heels!! The only problem is, they make them so high now and as I get older I find it hard to wear 4″ or higher heels now. Where can I find sexy high heels that still look good but are at least 3-1/2″ in height??

  13. Hi Dianna,
Great to hear from you! You can go to http://www.zappos.com and search pumps and heels by height! This is a great way to find lots of choices of cute heels! Good luck!
