Do you have a dress or top that just feels like it is showing too much skin?
Here is a quick tip on how to fix that and feel confident and fabulous after 40!
You can find a similar necklace and more at our fabulous Stella and Dot store!
Here is a dress that I (JoJami) have had in my closet for a while. I love how comfortable it is, but the self belt made this dress look too cutesy pie, looking for me. Also, it sort of made my tummy look fat. So I tried it with a wide leather with stretchy in the back belt that I bought recently and it updated the dress immediately! It is also much more figure flattering!
So, why not go in and see what dresses you have that you can change out the belt and look better!
Here’s a great style question from one of our readers:
“It now seems to be the style to not have your shoes and purse match. What and how do you determine what to match them with? The old way was to have back, brown, navy,or red if you where feeling wild and they always matched your purse..Some pointers on what is in now.”
~Barbara P.
Deciding what purse to go with your shoes can be tricky. Some women buy only one purse and wear it with everything. Others collect purses and change them around all the time. It all depends on your needs and lifestyle, but in general your purse needs to be of high quality and the size should fit your style and personality.
This is a photo of fellow blogger Susan Tabak who always has great fashion sense! See how the colors all blend and her purse does not stand out, but pulls her simple outfit together!
Here are a few basic rules to remember:
I know so many women that have found “treasures” at off-price stores like T.J. Max and Marshalls. So, I thought it would be fun to tell you about what I (JoJami) found on my recent trip to Marshalls, over the weekend.
For me personally, I find the clothes shopping at these types of stores overwhelming. You have to be a very patient and talented lady to pick through the racks of clothes to come up with “pearls” in the waves of mix matched sea kelp! Yes, I have had my luck at finding the odd skirt or workout top, over the years but over all, it is not the clothes but the awesome section of soaps, exotic foods and home appliances, that I go ga ga over!
Moreover, there are tons of gift ideas to grab now and put away until Christmas and some for personal use now!
1)Pamper me, I’m all over it… The Soap Section.
These stores have awesome sections that are very organized with the most beautiful and lovely soaps, face creams and other products that pamper. Every few months I go in and head straight for the soap section to replenish my stash. For $3.99 I can splurge and have a huge bar of the most lovely lavender or Almond scented soap to enjoy in my shower or tub! They always have a great selection of different scents, so you just have to put your sniffer to work and find the ones that call to you!
2) Feel like taking a trip to Europe, check out the exotic food section.
When I am ready to replace my extra virgin olive oil, this is where I go. You will get a great price on it and while I’m there I love their jams from England and other exotic places.
3) Bring out your inner cook, Kitchen gadgets and more…
The other day, I needed to replace my tea kettle and get another mixing bowl…so what better place than their home section to do so. I found a gorgeous stainless steel Cuisinart kettle for less than $24.00! Meanwhile, I found a great cutting board to replace my old beat up one at home!
4) The Shoe section (Need we say more???)
Actually this section is pretty much a hit or miss as well. To this day, one of my favorite pair of shoes came from this section, but you have to be super picky or you will end up with one more pair of shoes that will be collecting dust.
5)Jet setting this summer? You gotta see Travel section:
This section must be new, since I have not really seen it before, but I loved it! At my store in Wilmington, Delaware, there was an entire kiosk filled with all sorts of travel goodies, like travel pillows, plastic compression bags, even those “fuzzy” hangers that are all the rage! The prices were all discounted on these hard to find items, that you don’t want to have wait to pick up at the airport!
So, we want to hear from you… What are some of your favorite things you get at discount stores?

Last spring as I ( Deborah) was passing by the Furla store in Toronto I noticed a beautiful display of electric blue purses in the window and had to stop.
The color was so unusual for a purse, but so magnificent, that I had to buy one. The funny thing was, I didn’t use it right away. I waited until this fall when things got cold and gray, and then I brought it out to perk up my wardrobe and my mood.
Ever since, I’ve been getting tons of compliments, and now it turns out that, this spring, my purse is very in style. Blue purses in shades of electric blue, turquoise, peacock blue and more, are everywhere.
JoJami and I took a look at what’s in the stores and found a few favorites, and not so favorites:
| Oh No!
This zippered mess looks like it has been through the washing machine.(Saks) |

| Oh yes!
Here’s a purse with the same zipper idea, but it’s streamlined look is classier for a gal over 40.(Nordstrom) |
![]() |
| Doesn’t work for us!
The cutesy leather bow detail combined with the sappy sweetheart lock makes this purse too high school for a grown up gal.(Nordstrom) |
![]() |
| Works for us!
Here’s a more grown up version that more sophisticated, yet it still has an edge.(Saks) |

| Heck No!
Do you really want to carry a blue velour handbag with “juicy” stamped across it, and a frayed rag hanging off it at your age? (Nordstrom) |
![]() |
| Oh Yes!
A leather bag in blue, or any other color is much classier. This Cole Haan purse, with its understated studs, is right on trend without being gaudy. ( Saks)

| Don’t go there! Too shiny, too showy. What works for Paris Hilton will make you look like you are having a midlife fashion meltdown.( Nordstrom) |
![]() |
| Go for it! Same shape as above, but the pebbled leather and more sophisticated shade of blue give this Prada purse an upper class edge.( Saks) |

| And Finally………
A GREAT PICK……………………. Here’s a great purse for shopping, going out with gals, going to a movie with hubby and just about everything else. Have Fun. Be Bold Buy Blue! (Saks) |

When you want to carry a bag that is a great value and be the first one on the block with one, check this out!
When handbag designer, Ellen Allen talks about her navy striped Murray Hill bag, she can hardly contain herself. “It’s big, organized, and sleek. It’s a sexy way to schlep.” Ellen’s enthusiasm for this tote is warranted, considering her name is on the silver logo plate that has women all over Annapolis talking. As an interior designer and a parent of two young boys, Ellen found herself constantly looking for a multifunctional bag to suit her on-the-go lifestyle. But she wasn’t willing to sacrifice style. “It was most important for me to have a bag that was chic yet practical,” she said. “Women have been choosing between fashion and practicality for years. Why can’t we have both?”
You can’t go wrong with this festive roomy bag, that has a couture look at a fraction of the cost.

The Godis Sweater is a great way to update your casual wardrobe!
Fall is the time for warm knits and cardigans! We fell in love with this variation of a cardigan from one of my (JoJami’s) favorite stores, Houpette Boutique in Greenville, Delaware. It’s called a “Godis Sweater,” and it’s so easy to just throw on! It’s very drapey and goes over anything.
I’m going to be dressing it up with a pair of colorful corduroys and a white button up blouse.
And for a more casual look, I paired it with some jeans, boots and a long-sleeve tee shirt.
In fact, I find that I am working this sweater into tons outfits these days! It’s totally hip and the silhouette is so in this season.
The ladies at Houpette are offering our readers a discount on this sweater. Originally $175, it’s now priced at $140 for our ladies. That’s a 20% off savings. I hope you love and wear yours as much as I do!
Alright, I know you’ve seen this dress before (you can see our “Tweak Your Chic” model wearing it in this post, and me in it again right here), but a neutral shirt dress is a staple. That means it never goes out of style, and you can keep updating it to fit the current trends. Below is a video showing how I used this season’s layering trend to breathe new life into an old dress…and I didn’t have to buy anything new to do it! That’s the easiest way to shop on a budget – treat your wardrobe like a store and keep reinventing outfits!
For more ways to update your wardrobe on a budget, check out our eBook Chic on the Cheap!
We’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about invigorating your wardrobe while on a budget. The best advice we can give is: accessorize! Accessories can range from very inexpensive to sky high, but when you’re shopping to update your wardrobe, you should be able to find inexpensive, modern pieces to add flavor to your outfits.
We recommend having several scarves to tie on now and again to dress up a plain tee-shirt, add interest to a boring suit, or even loop onto a handbag for a pop of color. Scarves are easy to wear and fun to find! Depending on your budget, you can splurge for pure silk or pashmina with designer prints, or save with synthetic or gauze fabric, or knock-offs (we won’t tell). Here are some inexpensive ones we found:

So suppose you are already on the scarf bandwagon – you have a closet full of them, but no idea how to wear them! We put together this short, fun video to show you a chic, European way to tie a scarf. Now you can wear them with anything!
What is your burning fashion question? We asked and you told us…
How can I look updated and chic and NOT spend a lot of money.
Deborah and I didn’t know if it could REALLY be done… so we went out and put it to the test.
Here am I (JoJami) with one of my lovely clients Linda S. Linda is over 40, a wife, mother of 4 kids, and a nurse. She told me she loves to see her teenage daughters looking hip and felt like those days were over for her. She rarely takes the time to shop for herself and when she does she never knew what to buy that was age appropriate.
So we let her read our new e-book… Chic on the Cheap~How to Update Your Wardrobe on a Budget and then sent her out shopping!

Client Linda and JoJami looking to dress chic on the cheap!
Linda realized that her first problem was that all these years she never really had the tools or plan she needed.
“One of the best part about the book was the chapter on Finding your Style Personality” says Linda. “That helped me keep my focus and opened my mind to try new things!”
Linda also confessed…
“I had a great leather skirt that I bought on sale last fall and never wore it because I didn’t have the right shoes.
After reading the book, I learned so much!! You, Glam Gals put in so many strategies that I could start using right away, and I had no idea of how many costly mistakes I have been making all these years!”

"Get Chic on the Cheap, it change my wardrobe, Yippee!"
