There’s nothing like the feeling of getting rid of your old things, but first you must have the right mind-set. You have to give yourself permission to let go.
You are not alone in that many of us have just too many things in our closet and drawers. There probably are not enough days in the year to even wear all your jeans, t-shirts and do we dare mention… SHOES???
Really, do you need a bunch of mediocre tops and skirts that you bought on sale because they were just a good deal?
It’s time to get rid of the junk and make room for just a few gorgeous, yummy fun things! (more on that later…)
So here is your holiday weekend challenge:
Get into that closet and clean it out!
Here are a few tips to get you motivated:
- If you have nice things you are not wearing give them to a friend in need or a charity (no use having them take up room in your closet, let them go to better use!)
- Need some extra cash? Try putting them up on e-bay or taking them to a consignment store.
- If your closet is cluttered with too many clothes you’ll end up making shopping mistakes. Make sure you know what is in your closet and what you need. Make a list and stick to it!

Once upon a time, (a few weeks ago) I (JoJami) I was having lunch at one my favorite local hangouts, Terrain, in Glenn Mills, PA.
While walking around, I spotted (on one of their groovy table displays) a book called, The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Ruebin. Being that I’m always a sucker for a book with titles like that, I bought it especially because I noticed that the author was going to be coming to town and giving a book talk on it!!! (This Sat. Jan. 29 , at Terrain)

Reading this book has kept me accountable and on track with my resolutions!
So, now I am a big fan of this book and since I’ve been working on it, of course have been hearing and seeing it all over the news. (Cool, others seem to like it too!)
So am I happier? So far so good! I have totally put into practice some of her tips and have my resolutions all organized on this neat chart that I look at every night and check off what I did and put a big “0″ on the things I don’t get to.
That being said, I’m tickled pink, that one of her highlighted points of being happy is:
“Clean out your closets”
Of course, I GET that point, big time. Hurray!! Finally someone else was confirming how super important it is to get that old closet organized! Gretchen is so right… it will make you feel happier if you get rid of that clutter!
GOOD NEWS: There is help and it’s really fun.
The Ultimate Cure For the Dysfunctional Closet will get you kick started to get motivated to clean out that dark abysis.

Out with the old, in with the new!
Boy, that is harder said than done when it comes to cleaning out your closet!
Here is a note from one of or new readers:

What should I keep or throw out?
I am newly 50 and an empty nester, trying to clear out the clutter of 2 decades of my “mommy wardrobe”, but I am having a hard time deciding what to keep and what to part with!! Any suggestions would be welcome!!

Welcome Terri!
Good to hear that you are seeing change in your life and trying to update it!
Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Set some goals. Make a pie chart of all your activities and divide the pie up into sections. Make sure to put in what percent of the time you spend in each activity.
- If you realize that you are spending most of your time doing things that need updated and fresh casual clothes, then make sure that you get rid of things that you are not wearing like old suits ect..
- Next go through your closet and get rid of things you are not wearing or do not fit anymore.
- Make sure to have a pad of paper and pencil handy to make a list of things you might need to replace.
- Take the time to try on everything…you will be surprised on how things look and will want to get rid of!
- Our “go to” items are leggings, boots and long sweaters. These need to be long enough to cover your hips. The old ones are too short and should be replaced!
Being an empty nester might mean you have more time to go out to dinner, host a dinner party for friends, attend concerts or go out to the movies.
That means you will want to get rid of the sweat suites and tennis shoes. Now is the time to have a great pair of boots, updated jeans and a few sweater dresses and of course lots of scarves! (stay tuned for more posts on this!)

Do you have a good fitting knee high boot?
You will not want to go through fall without at least 1 or 2 pair of boots, one that is knee high and one short for under pants.
The biggest factor for the knee high ones is fit and where they hit your leg. You will want to make sure that they come up to your knee and fit around your leg nice and snug. (Nordstoms) |
A boot like this in brown or black will be a work horse in your wardrobe to wear with skirts or dresses! |
| The long cardigan
For over 40 ladies the long cardigan vs a pull over is a great update. This you will want to layer with a nice fitting t-shirt and possibly belt it. Now with the boots you have a great updated casual look! (Nordtroms)

This long cardigan is perfect to go from office to casual |
Flat front, straight legged pants:
Make sure you have a nice pair of flat front, straight legged pants to tuck into those boots. J.Crew has some of the most flattering ones we’ve seen and they fit is terrific. |
This pant comes in lots of colors and has a great fit! |
Fitted Jacket vs Boxy Jacket
It is all about the fit this fall! Have you bought a new jacket lately? Don’t go out and get another boring boxy one… instead really shop around for one with lots of darts that make the jacket mold to your body. They are not easy to find, so be picky. You can really feel great when you throw on a wonderful jacket! (Bloomingdales) |
This is a classic style that hugs the body nicely, from Ralph Lauren |
Is your overcoat overdue to be replaced?
Here is where it can really get fun! So many of us feel we have to play it “safe” and practical when it comes to our overcoat. If you have an old boring one, this should be your year to go out and find one that states your personality! (Nordstroms) |
Even though the model is super young, this coat would still be age appropriate not to mention feminine and festive! |

It might be time to get rid of some of those old clothes!
Have you noticed some of those little pesky moth holes in your favorite sweater yet this winter?
Thanks to one of our readers, who sent us a recent article in the New York Times our antennas went up when we realized that it was that time of year when our closet are susceptible to being eaten my moths!
“They reveal themselves in the form of small, irregular holes in your cashmere sweater, or as a ghostly apparition flitting from the pantry shadows, or perhaps most disturbing, as tiny larvae cocooned in the cuff of a wool coat.
It’s those larvae, not adult moths, that damage your winter wardrobe. Adults merely lay eggs, preferably on a dark, undisturbed surface where animal fibers — wool, perhaps, or in less politically correct closets, fur — will provide food for their young. (The current prevalence of cottons and synthetics has meant rough times for baby moths.)”
Even Oprah is getting her closet cleaned out and selling her cast offs to raise money for her girls school in Africa. She might have done so a lot sooner if she knew what keeping all those old clothes could be dangerous!
