This Glam gal sure got my attention in this lovely jacket! Cheryl Warfield (age,61) is a National Sales Director for Mary Kay.
Hi there, Glam Gal, JoJami here from sunny, Sarasota, Flordia!
In case you are new to Fabulous After 40, I’m currently traveling around the country in a motorcoach (aka:Tour de Glam)
These comfy shoe "booties" are from Vera Bradly
and have been meeting so many wonderful women!
Case in point, while waiting to get my hair done at a lovely hair salon called Fresh, I sat down next to this perky, Glam Gal!
Here at Fabulous After 4o, we always say that when you are going to get your hair done always wear something that reflects your personality. You will want your hair to match your style.
So, when I noticed this gal I was so curious about why she looked so nice!
JJ: You look so nice, do you usually dress up to go to the hair salon?
Cheryl: LOL, Well, I like to look nice. I was at a meeting earlier for work.
JJ: I love your jacket, it’s so attractive! Where did you get it?
One of our favorite celebrities is Victoria Beckham. Yes, we know she is stick thin and drop dead gorgeous but still her style is so classy and mostly age-appropriate. This means that you can take inspiration from her and pull it off no matter what your size.
These taupe suede boots are the starting point to a great look. Clean lines and a rounded toe is what you are looking for.
Beige pencil skirt. You could also do this in a blue or red with these boots!
Small plaid blouse. If you are in warm weather this sleeveless shirt is perfect. Those who live in cool climates can do a long sleeve and the look will be the same.
Of course you could add a short cropped jacket or cardigan for work.
Wondering what to wear to the office these days? In an earlier post I mentioned one of our loyal Fabulous after 40 readers Dawn Stanyon. Dawn is from The Emily Post Institute and is is an expert in Corporate dress. JoJami and I recently interviewed her and she had some gets tips to pass along. Here’s our conversation with her.
Glam Gals: What’s the biggest mistake you see mature women making in the way they dress at the office?
If you look dated, people will assume your ideas are dated
Dawn: Some women stay stuck in a look that worked for them two decades before: same hairstyle and color; same jumpers and baggy T’s. A handful of mature women go more sexy – maybe they’ve lost weight or have gone through a major life transition and want to be out there. But lots of exposed legs and decolletage combined with clothes from the Juniors’ Department doesn’t work for a professional forty-something woman. Other women embrace comfort instead learning what really works for their body type. I often see synthetic knit wear with elastic waists and oversized jackets. And, hey!, I totally get the comfort angle. When I work with a client I tell them that is doesn’t matter your body size and shape – whether you’re a rectangle, pear/dewdrop, apple or inverted triangle – your can look amazing and project a professional image.
Glam Gals: Can you give us some tips to look youthful at work without looking like you are trying to be young?
Dawn: Learn your body type. Work with a knowledgeable clothing store employee or image consultant to find out what style, fit and proportions work for you. 2) Learn what colors work for you. Everyone knows when they are wearing a great color for their skin tone and texture. People say, “You are glowing!” or “You look so beautiful today.” 3) Invest in some quality classic pieces that have amazing fit and make you feel like 10 billion bucks. 4) Follow the trends by looking through fashion magazines (and reading amazing fashion blogs!). Spend some money each season on a few trendy colors and styles – but don’t spend a lot and keep those pieces to the minimum in your look.
Transitioning into fall can be frustrating. One day it’s hot, the next cool. It’s October so you don’t want to look like you’re still wearing your summer clothes yet it’s not cold enough to break out the turtlenecks. Time to “shop” in your closet, use one of your light weight dresses, add a few accessories or layers to transform your dress into a new outfit. That’s what we call dressing Chic on the Cheap!
Here are a few tips on how to gently transition into fall:
Wear darker, richer colors
Take a simple cotton dress and add a stretch belt
Tie on a light weight scarf
Time to get out the boots, especially on those rainy days
Here’s a little video to show you how:

Stopped in my tracks when I saw this gal sitting on the steps on the Upper East side. She just looked so pulled together! This is a great example of how having a few quality pieces can really set you apart from the crowd!
Marie is the Glam Gal of the day!
Just getting off work, Maria was waiting to pick up her son and agreed to let me take a few shots of her outfit.

Love the way she layered and added a pop of color with these vintage bangels

I continue to enjoy your blog … and I have a question. Am leaving for Florida next week and would like to know what’s the verdict on the wider-leg capri pants we were all wearing last summer. I see that wider (long) pants are in, but I not sure about the one that hit above the ankle. I have several pairs in flattering black crepe; they were a staple last year, and so easy/comfortable to wear. I do like the straight leg, snug fitting Capris — but do I have to put my wider ones away this year?
Thank you,
These types of capris are out of style, too short and the cuff is a no no.
Cindy
Hi Cindy,
Great to hear from you! Your question is a good one. We recently wrote a post about the new Spring 2011 version of the Capri and it is definitely different than last year’s, however if your old Capris are still in good shape you should feel fine wearing them. Just don’t buy anymore like them on your next shopping trip!
If you still want to wear them, try updating them by wearing one of the new clunky wedges.
Why?: In a corporate world where everything seems to be black or navy, there is now a choice
to have a wonderful well made and functional bag that acts like both a purse and briefcase
in one! But the best part is that it comes in a variety of gorgeous colors to choose from! You can finally feel “unique” and express your personality with your briefcase!
I have owned my Coakley for over 2 years and use it all the time and it still looks brand new.
