Summer dressing in NYC: Looking fabulous after 40

JoJami here from NYC.

Stopped in my tracks when I saw this gal sitting on the steps on the Upper East side. She just looked so pulled together! This is a great example of how having a few quality pieces can really set you apart from the crowd!

Marie is the Glam Gal of the day!

Just getting off work, Maria was waiting to pick up her son and agreed to let me take a few shots of her outfit.

Love the way she layered and added a pop of color with these vintage bangels

Updating last year’s Capris…can it be done?

Hello Glam Gals –

I continue to enjoy your blog … and I have a question. Am leaving for Florida next week and would like to know what’s the verdict on the wider-leg capri pants we were all wearing last summer. I see that wider (long) pants are in, but I not sure about the one that hit above the ankle. I have several pairs in flattering black crepe; they were a staple last year, and so easy/comfortable to wear. I do like the straight leg, snug fitting Capris — but do I have to put my wider ones away this year?

Thank you,

These types of capris are out of style, too short and the cuff is a no no.

Cindy

Hi Cindy,

Great to hear from you! Your question is a good one. We recently wrote a post about  the new Spring 2011 version of the Capri and it is definitely different than last year’s, however if your old Capris are still in good shape you should feel fine wearing them.  Just don’t buy anymore like them on your next shopping trip!

If you still want to wear them, try updating them by wearing one of the new clunky wedges.

Good luck!

Cheers,

The Glam Gals

Purse + Briefcase = Coakley Bag

Worth the Splurge? review by JoJami

Item:

Coakley Briefcase

Verdict: It’s FAB!

Why?: In a corporate world where everything seems to be black or navy, there is now a choice

to have a wonderful well made and functional bag that acts like both a purse and briefcase

in one! But the best part is that it comes in a variety of  gorgeous colors to choose from! You can finally feel “unique” and express your personality with your briefcase!

I have owned my Coakley for over 2 years and use it all the time and it still looks brand new.

>Special Sale!: Put in FabFourty in the Special Code box and get a 30% discount

and Free Shipping!

Go to www.coakleybags.com and pick out your favorite style and color!

Playing with Color for the Holidays

Is it just us, or when you go Holiday Shopping do you find that you end up buying a few things for yourself?

Well, if you do get tempted…we suggest that you pick up a little something with color in it!

Instead of buying another all black, Little Black Dress this holiday season, why not buy something like this to add some wow.

I (Deborah) ran into Norwegian Image Consultant Anne Berit Olsvik  from Total Image when she attended the SHINE conference in November. On cocktail night Anne threw on this sexy little number!  It’s an unusual color combination of black, green, purple and blue … so youthful and festive… and it looks fabulous on Anne!

What might a little color do for you? Send us what you plan to to wear for your holiday party and we’ll post your picture!

Dressing Chic with Sensible Shoes…but How?

We hear this all the time :

I can’t wear heels because…

  1. I have problems with my feet… and that leads to the next problem…
  2. I can’t wear skirts or dresses because sensible shoes look horrible with them~

The first thing you have to do is take a leap and just try something new that you might have never thought of trying before.

Yesterday I was working with a client who had an amazing story. Ann (age 60) had recently made a big change in her life by leaving her job as a scientist, to start her own business. All her life she had been dressing very conservatively for religious reasons and so she asked me ( JoJami)  to take her shopping to find her new self!

Even though she has nice legs Anne had always worn long skirts or pants, and of course, sensible shoes.

The boots from Aquatalia are pricey but definitely worth the splurge!

Knowing that we had shoe issues..that’s where we started. If you don’t have updated shoes you will never feel polished. She had never worn heels so we decided that she should have a nice pair of cool, flat boots!
Off we went to Nordstoms!  Of course, they have an amazing shoe department and after trying on many styles she finally found a pair (Aquatalia from Zappos) that fit properly and were chic and comfortable.

At first sight Ann said, “NO, the toes are too pointy.” I asked her to just try them on and she was shocked! Yes, they were comfortable and gave her support too! Round one of trying something new!  Ann was thrilled with her new purchase and kept telling me, at least 1o times that day, how COMFORTABLE these boots were!

Next, went on to find her a new suit. Slowly we started off with pant suits (this was in her comfort zone), but then I brought her in a pencil skirt to try and some black tights. What a great sport, she tried them all on and after a few hmms and aahs…decided that she LOVED her new look, and so I put back all the pants. She looked like she had lost 10 pounds and was now a new woman!  Her problem of having to wear sensible shoes was solved and now she could move forward into wearing things that were more flattering to her figure~

BEFORE: Ann in a typical outfit.

AFTER: Ann in her new pencil skirt. Instant makeover!

Best of all she wrote me a sweet note that said, “Thanks for  walking me to the mountain top of transformation, change and a great new image!”

Ann you are one brave woman and I applaud your courage to keep exploring new things, best of luck to you!

Over 40? Fit and style are everything!

This LBD is oh so slimming!

When you go to buy your next little black dress… make sure you are super picky! Wendy Bernard, Esq. did just that with this simple yet figure flattering, jersey dress.

Here’s what she did right:

  • The dress fits just perfect, not too loose or too tight
  • Length is great on her.. she has nice legs and she is showing them off but not too much!
  • LOVE  the snakeskin shoes! These round toed, platform heels are really updated and put some of her personality into her outfit!
  • The neckline is flattering on her and she did not over do the cleavage. The plunge is just right…not too low or revealing for a professional setting!
