Hi JoJami and Deborah -

Tamara took this photo of the young sales girl wearing a headband. Would you wear this as a woman over 40?
I have seen all kinds of head-wear lately – cute little headbands with pretty accents (see picture on the right). I’m wondering if those types of head-wear are appropriate for over 40?
Thanks,
Tamara

Thanks, Tamara for sending in this question!
We posted this question over on our Facebook page and we got so many comments that we wanted to share them with you all here as well!
While a simple headband can be fine no matter what your age, when you start trying to add all sorts of flowers, bows and large do-dads, then you are treading in some risky waters!
The young gal in the photo certainly looks adorable in this headband and it works well with her romantic lace top, we feel the effect would certainly be different when you add maturity into the mix.
With fashion tips, it is a good rule never like to say “never,” however, we would highly recommend that you think twice about trying this hot trend. While we’re sure there is someone out there that could pull this off, for the rest of us… trying to sport a large, flouncy bow, well… it might come across as almost “costumey.”
We suggest leaving fancy headbands to the younger set.

These tall suede black boots were one of my favorite things this year~JoJami
At the end of every year, I enjoy looking back and taking note of which purchases were my favorites and which ones I got the most enjoyment out of.
Here are a few things that made the top of my list in 2011:
- Tall black suede boots made my dresses go from fall to winter!
- Needed to update my sunglasses this year, so got these Ray Bans
- Leopard pumps I wore with both my jeans, dresses and skirts
- This bold necklace can dress up a t-shirt and made it “glam”
- Textured stockings we’re a hot trend this season and inexpensive to try
- Tested this Dior mascara and loved it, was certainly worth the splurge!
- This faux fur scarf has been my new go-to piece when I run out the door
- My scent of choice, Dolce and Gabbana, The One.
Tahari by Arthur S Levine pleated dress, $37

Roberto Del Carlo leather boots, $269
BP. leopard print high heels, $70
Pam Hiran animal print jewelry, $60
Dorothy Perkins fur scarve, $14
Ray-Ban folding sunglasses, $154
Dior ‘Diorshow Extase’ Mascara, $28
Dolce & Gabbana The One 2.5 Oz Eau De Parfum Spray, $95
What are some of your favorite things? Please share with us and comment below!
One of our favorite celebrities is Victoria Beckham. Yes, we know she is stick thin and drop dead gorgeous but still her style is so classy and mostly age-appropriate. This means that you can take inspiration from her and pull it off no matter what your size.
Here is a recent example of her good taste.
Here is what we like:
- These taupe suede boots are the starting point to a great look. Clean lines and a rounded toe is what you are looking for.
- Beige pencil skirt. You could also do this in a blue or red with these boots!
- Small plaid blouse. If you are in warm weather this sleeveless shirt is perfect. Those who live in cool climates can do a long sleeve and the look will be the same.
- Of course you could add a short cropped jacket or cardigan for work.
- The thin belt is a must to finish off the look!

Christmas sweaters are frumpy
If you read our post about what to wear Christmas shopping you saw that there were some pretty fashionable women out at the malls. We wish we could say the same for the fashions we saw in the store windows.

A dowdy holiday look
I think by now we all know that cutesy holiday sweaters are a frumpy no-no.

But last week we saw a few holiday party outfits that were even worse. Everyone is trying to be new, different and hip and sometimes retailers come out with the most gawdawful stuff!
Take a look……… One trend we noticed was the crisp shirt with a sparkly top over it. Can you really imagine wearing the dowdy look above – the long black skirt, stiff cotton shirt and baggy gold sweater? Dowdy!
<<How about this frumpy odd couple combo?
The green shirt with sparkly tank is at least more fitted, but is that really attractive? Just because it’s in fashion, don’t go there! Use some common sense if you want to look Fabulous after 40 this holiday season.

Melissa looks like a goddess in this one shoulder dress!
We wanted to share an email from a reader , Melissa, who totally rocked a one shoulder dress! Here’s what she said:
I was surfing the net & read your article on accessorizing a one shoulder dress. Here’s a photo of me taken this past October. I’m 42 years old, & this was my daughter’s homecoming dress that I had delivered to my office! This was an impromptu shot, & I was really trying the dress on for kicks. LOL! I wanted her to see that it fit me too! I was wearing pearls at work, not really thinking about it, but the dress truly looked great with and without the necklace. Enjoy! Melissa
Melissa looks Fabulous!! and she got us thinking that we wanted to remind all of you that one shoulder dresses are excellent for Christmas parties. They’re sexy without showing too much, and very elegant too. The one shoulder style looks best if you have average to wide shoulders, but stay away from them if you have small shoulders and side hips ( pear shape). The emphasis up bareness up top will only make you look more bottom heavy. Here are a few we found that would look gorgeous this Holiday season:
Satin Seduction: A knock-out dress with glam waist bling. It’s elegant, sexy and so age appropriate. This dress works at Christmas or year round! By David Meister (Saks)

Deck The Halls: Picture yourself in this rich burgundy drape, standing by a beautifully decorated Christmas tree with candles aglow? Alice and Olivia ( Saks)

Flirty and Fun: Love the drama of this feather trimmed one-shoulder. You’ll turn head on New Year’s Eve in this sexy, fashion forward gown. By David Meister (Saks)

It’s a jungle out there…. Animal prints such as leopard and snakeskin are everywhere! How do you tame this trend so you don’t look like you walked out of a zoo?
A little is animal print is sexy and chic at any age, but too much of it will make others roar..roar with laughter. (Remember SCTV’s Edith Prickly?) Don’t be a fashion victim.

A touch of exotic skin shows that you have a creative side and that you are not afraid to express yourself. However, be stingy with animal prints. Live by the ONE ANIMAL RULE. What’s that?

Deborah and JoJami with Christine in her fun leopard sweater
If your sweater is leopard like in the photo above… Boom. That’s it! You really don’t need any more leopard print anywhere else, and you definitely shouldn’t mix your leopard print with tiger, zebra, giraffe, snake, lizard …you name it. Instead pair that eye-catching leopard sweater with a classic pencil skirt in a neutral like black, camel, cream, brown, or gorgeous red, like Christine Kolenda did at NYC’s Beauty Bash event. Simple and chic, her sweater is her statement piece. Read more

Over on our Facebook page one of our loyal readers Celeste Dickson recently posted this photo:

Now this is a great find, a faux vest for only $30.00 at T.J.Max
She wrote:
I admit it – I have shamelessly copied JoJami with this purchase of this faux vest. I would never have tried something on like this until I saw how great she looked in a similar one. And mine, though lifelike, is FAUX! Machine washable acrylic/poly. It really does look like suede and fur, but isn’t. And it’s reversible! $30 at TJ Maxx.
Thanks for sharing Celeste! You will certainly enjoy this purchase guilt free since you found it for a great price, it’s faux fur and you can wear it 2 ways!
Not only that, but a vest is a great “transition” piece to go from fall into winter or just to wear all winter if you come from parts of the country that don’t get all that cold.
We think you might have seen JoBee (my mother) in one too…She was my fashion inspiration to buy a black vest!

Here is JoJami's mother JoBee (age 75) rockin her fur vest!
