If I (JoJami) had to pick on type of item to update my jewelry box, I would pick a cuff style bracelet.
Here are a few ideas that are Glam Gals approved from our new collection of Stella and Dot jewelry! We have priced this jewelry and compared the style and quality to other brands of fashion jewelry and can confidently say that we think this is the best value out there!
Have fun and try a cuff. We think you find that they are an easy way to add some pizazz to your wardrobe!

This silver cuff is so simple and lightweight, you can wear it everyday!

This beautiful cuff will make a statement weather you dress it up with a pretty dress or wear it with jeans!

This airy style is says, "Spring/Summer"

This cuff is a great basic and will be able to transition you from winter into Spring!
Oh my gosh…when you live back east like we Glam Gals do, you get pretty tired of all the snow and dreary weather, SO when the sun starts peaking out again, like it has this week, we sure get the itch to get out and go buy something new for Spring! (Good to know that you are not the only one, right!)
I (JoJami) did just that this week and let me tell you what I saw.

Beware of the Sale rack!
Here I was at the department store, and all this gorgeous new merchandise was hanging there while, ALL the women were over at the Sale rack of old tired, picked over junky tops, pants, dresses….
Ladies, DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE!
Beware of the SALE rack! You will be tempted to bring home, yet again, something to hang in your closet that is just mediocre.

Always buy something you love and adore, don't settle!
INSTEAD… just go window shopping and try on things that are fresh and new for Spring. Then you can see if you want to splurge on a new jacket or top that is actually updated, new and FUN!
Here is my 1 purchase over the weekend.
This colorful BCBG jacket! I have already worn it 2 times and have felt great in it. I have satisfied my shopping craving, and have a new piece for my wardrobe, that I should enjoy for the next few years.
Instead of buying something that you just “sort of like”, be super picky and try buying something that you really need and love.
THEN send us a photo and tell us about it!!!

Listen into this special interview with author, Robyn Okrant
First there was the Julie/Julia Project, then came Living Oprah~ My One-Year Experiment to walk the Walk of the Queen of Talk.
Yoga teacher, Robyn Okrant, aka LO (short for Living Oprah) is a self proclaimed, “average” almost 40 year old, who set out to find out what would happen if she put her life in the hands of televisions’ most influential personality.
The result was a full year of watching the Oprah Show (everyday), reading O Magazine, and going on line to the website as well. What happened is a fun ride down a slippery slope. Not wanting to be sponsored, Robyn chose to buy everything that she could afford that Oprah reccomended for a full year… even if that ment having to give back a free Kindle that the producers of Oprah sent her! OUCH!
JoJami read the book (Loved it!) and got a chance to interview Robyn this week to ask her some upclose and personal questions about how the whole thing went!
Listen here for this juicy chat with the author and find out if LO has worn out the cute ,age-appropriate, lepeord print flats she was instructed to buy!

The Godis Sweater is a great way to update your casual wardrobe!
Fall is the time for warm knits and cardigans! We fell in love with this variation of a cardigan from one of my (JoJami’s) favorite stores, Houpette Boutique in Greenville, Delaware. It’s called a “Godis Sweater,” and it’s so easy to just throw on! It’s very drapey and goes over anything.
I’m going to be dressing it up with a pair of colorful corduroys and a white button up blouse.
And for a more casual look, I paired it with some jeans, boots and a long-sleeve tee shirt.
In fact, I find that I am working this sweater into tons outfits these days! It’s totally hip and the silhouette is so in this season.
The ladies at Houpette are offering our readers a discount on this sweater. Originally $175, it’s now priced at $140 for our ladies. That’s a 20% off savings. I hope you love and wear yours as much as I do!

Is fear of flabby arms are on your list?
If you were to make the top 10 list of getting old what would they be?
We know many of you worry about how to deal with flabby arms. ( The Glam Gals suggest that you try a great shape wear product called Sassybax)
Bottom line is when you look at your fears face on, you might be surprised to find there are some ready solutions to many of them…
This is just one of the topics in this weeks Blogging Boomers Carnival #132, that you might find interesting.

What is your burning fashion question? We asked and you told us…
How can I look updated and chic and NOT spend a lot of money.
Deborah and I didn’t know if it could REALLY be done… so we went out and put it to the test.
Here am I (JoJami) with one of my lovely clients Linda S. Linda is over 40, a wife, mother of 4 kids, and a nurse. She told me she loves to see her teenage daughters looking hip and felt like those days were over for her. She rarely takes the time to shop for herself and when she does she never knew what to buy that was age appropriate.
So we let her read our new e-book… Chic on the Cheap~How to Update Your Wardrobe on a Budget and then sent her out shopping!

Client Linda and JoJami looking to dress chic on the cheap!
Linda realized that her first problem was that all these years she never really had the tools or plan she needed.
“One of the best part about the book was the chapter on Finding your Style Personality” says Linda. “That helped me keep my focus and opened my mind to try new things!”
Linda also confessed…
“I had a great leather skirt that I bought on sale last fall and never wore it because I didn’t have the right shoes.
After reading the book, I learned so much!! You, Glam Gals put in so many strategies that I could start using right away, and I had no idea of how many costly mistakes I have been making all these years!”

"Get Chic on the Cheap, it change my wardrobe, Yippee!"

What took us so long to talk about this… you know, taking care of the hair, down there~
We might be over 40, but we can’t forget to take our grooming tips ALL OVER! From lip hair, to the bikini line, ladies, we must not forget to keep things trimmed up and pretty.

You get all this, inside!
We found this fun product called:The Ultimate Shaving Kit, that has everything you need (including a detailed instruction booklet) to keep that one particular hard to reach area, all spiffy looking! Not to mention, when we tried it, we were super impressed with the quality of all the goodies that it comes with, from a really nice razor to super soothing lotions. You can shave and be ready to go with no irritation and it even comes with some creative design ideas!!
You will not find this product in stores, yet, so if your looking for that perfect fun girlfriend gift, or want to try it for yourself, you will have to order it online.
In a recent post, I (JoJami) mentioned that my colorful skirt was a few years old and “not that in style any more.”
So that being said…you are probably asking the question, so what is in style?
Although we’ve seen a ton on pleated, circle skirts with a lot of volume that usually hit above the knee, that’s a style best left to younger ladies. As far as skirts go, if you’re ready for a new one, go with a pencil skirt or one that is a little straighter. The knee-length classic pencil or slimmer A-line skirt is flattering on most body types, and has been around for a few seasons now. The popularity is growing, so not only are they all over the place, but pencils don’t come in just black or gray anymore! Even though they have a more streamlined look, but you can go for fun colors and jazzy prints to liven them up a little.
Here are a few that we suggest: What we like about these are that you can start wearing them now with sandals and then as we transition into fall, you can add some tights and boots!
 |
Here’s one from Boden. It’s a slimmer A-line skirt with a bold pattern that can be worn with neutral wedges, or boot like in the picture. We love the colors in this, and it’s a great example of how you can transition from summer to fall with boots. |
 |
This skirt is from Nordstrom’s. In the picture, it’s dressed up with heels, but pair it with gladiator sandals for casual or brown knee-high boots in fall! The fact that it has a brown pattern in it makes it a no-brainer for choosing matching shoes. |
 |
Here’s another example from Nordstom’s. We usually find black and white to be a little boring, so make it more fun with a bright top! We’ve been seeing a lot of plaid in stores this season, so make sure you wear plaid in a sophisticated and feminine way (not those shrunken flannel shirts that are all the rage among teen girls). |

Sigrid Olsen, artist/designer
If you’re over 40, chances are you’ve bought at least one item of clothing from designer Sigrid Olsen.
Last night, I (JoJami) had a chance to met up with Sigrid, who was one of the speakers at the Smart Talk Series in Wilmington, DE.
Olsen (age 55) said she started out in her career as an artist and morphed onto the fashion scene 25 years ago, heading up her name brand clothing empire. She designed for “real” women, using bright colors and simple classic designs that became her trademark.
However, a few years ago that all changed. With the economy sinking, Sigrid left her business to start fresh. “My company had become so large that I did not get to do what I loved to do, which is creative based.
“I ended up just being the head of my company and doing meetings all day. I had lost touch with my roots and doing my passion which is art…. I am much happier now.”

ISLA beach house
So what does that “now” look like?
Olsen, who lives in Gloucester, MA, now runs a retail boutique, called ISLA Beach house, just a few steps down the road from her home, where she sells her sunny, beach-inspired art, pottery and other unique finds.
“I like to find new artists and help promote them”, she said with a twinkle in her eye. She is obviously passionate about her new venture!
Not to be one to sit still, Sigrid, found Yoga soon after her “retirement” and now runs her Yoga/Art fusion retreats all over the world.
A self professed “doer” Sigrid Olsen is living her passion and thanks to her creativity we can now bring a piece of her colorful world into ours!

Deborah (circa 2004) in her favorite Sigrid Olsen outfit
A cute story… Deborah tells me that back in around 2003 after having two babies two years apart, she was feeling rather frumpy. She went to Florida and discovered Sigrid Olsen in Burdines and bought a ton of her bright fun clothes.
Deb was so thrilled she even emailed Sigrid to tell her how happy her clothes made her feel, and what a perfect fit they were. Here’s Deb a couple of years later in those same Sigrid Olsen clothes that she wore and wore.
Doesn’t the robin’s egg blue and peach go beautifully with her Spring complexion?

Over the years, has your daughter ever “borrowed” your clothes or shoes? Well now the tables have been turned with our friend Sherrie Mathieson’s new book, Steal This Style ~Mom’s and Daughter’s Swap Wardrobe Secrets. We like this book because it is the perfect guide on how to borrow from younger generations (pieces that are hip yet appropriate) as well as past generations (classic items that are forever cool) – and attain great style in the process. Inside are lots of wonderful photos that make the tips easy to imitate!
Listen below for 3 quick tips from Sherrie’s new new book!
Be sure to pick up a copy of Steal This Style.
We recently read an article in which the author was complaining that the “over 40″ market has been ignored by retailers.
True, there are not that many choices out there, however one of our blogging buddies, Dina at This Marriage Thing has found a few sites she likes and has reviewed them!
To read her review and many other great articles on a variety of boomer topics, head on over to The Blogging Boomer’s Carnival hosted by our friend, Rhea at The Boomer Chronicles.

fashion vending machine for ballet flats
Leave it to my (JoJami’s) niece Abigail to share with me the latest in fashion vending machines!
Have you ever been out late at night in your heels and just find that final walk back to the car can be a real pain!
Here is a vending machine that doles out little ballet flats you can slip on when needed!
Just thought it was amusing and actually really enjoyed the rest of the site too.
It is called The Frisky.com...and I must admit, I think we can all use a little more “frisky” in our life!!!

Don't get suckered into a crazy trend!
Dear Glam Gals,
I’ve found that Earrings are a great way to add some life to my wardrobe. The only problem is there are so many out there, I have no idea what kind to buy. Can you give me some tips for what to look for and what is currently in style?
Anne — Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Hi Anne,
The most important thing is not to get suckered into wearing a pair of earrings that are “currently in style” but do not suit you. (Believe us, it’s not just young gals like Jessica Simpson who fall for ridiculous trends.)
Don’t get us wrong. Earrings are a wonderful way to perk up your face and make you look classy and fabulous after 40. There are many things to consider when choosing the right pair. The most important is:
Face Shape
These will slim a round face. |
Round Face? If your face is round and you end up gaining a few pounds after 40, you can really look very wide and full. Wear long earrings to make you face look slimmer. Avoid large circular earrings, hoops and studs. |
This will widen a long face |
Long face? Avoid long earrings. Try round earrings to widen your face, and make it look fuller. |
Ovals soften a square jaw |
Square Jaw? Rounded edges or oval shapes soften things up. Circular earrings and Hoops will work. |
Chandelier earrings look fill in a heart shaped face. |
Heart Shaped Face? Counterbalance your sharp chin with chandelier or tear drop earrings that fill in the bottom half of your face. |
Oval Shaped Face? You can wear almost anything, but triangular earrings or simple studs will show off your lovely cheekbones best!
Here are a few more of our current favorites:
Good for long or oval face |
Nice choice for square jaw |
lovely for heart shaped or oval shaped |
Cute on average width face |
Want to know the second most important thing to consider when choosing earrings? Watch for our next post.
All earrings are from Saks.
