Clogs that pass the fashion test this Spring!

OK OK…you ladies are sure passionate about your clogs!

We recently wrote a post to discuss whether clogs were in fashion and you left us lots and lots of comments.

Many of you wrote that you loved the comfort of a clog, while others thought they were “hideous”!

Well, after causing so much fuss, I (JoJami) thought I would take a look around and find out if there were  any clogs that I might actually wear.  I happen to be out in Aspen right now and it is amazing how different women dress when the weather is really messy most of the winter. I definitely  have been seeing more boots, but I’m sure as the snow melts many of these women are going to be sporting clogs since this is such a casual environment.

Here is an interesting article on how to wear clogs that show a few of the new “fashion” clogs. As you can see, even these skinny young girls do not look all that great in them, so can you imagine us over 40 gals!

However,  if you  still want to try to wear the clog as a fashion trend this Spring, then here are some of my picks! (Deborah says she has yet to find any clog she finds attractive! )

These clogs are from Zappos.

Tassels are everywhere this Spring, so why not try them on your clogs!

The nude color and simple design makes this clog a good choice

These clog inspired shoes would work well with both pants or a skirt!

I just wanted to drop a line and say I agree with you ladies about the frump-factor of clogs. With that said, I have to confess that I DO own a pair of Coach brown suede and fur trimmed, wedge heel clogs that I wore to a couple of ski lodges this past holiday season. I ONLY wore them with boot cut jeans and a suede jacket that matched. In other words, I wore them appropriately for the environment I was dressing to attend (did that make sense?). Also, they were convenient to easily slip on-and-off when I entered our cabin so I didn’t track snow on the carpet.

I think the spring clogs are atrocious. They are NOT flattering I don’t care if you are European, American or Martian! Just my opinion though.

I do believe they have their place on the garden and should be taken off outside your back door, in your garage or your mudroom, and left there. I see women in the store all the time in those plastic looking clogs – it’s never a pretty site. It’s almost as if the clogs (I’m talking about the Crocs type) set the stage/mood for the whole outfit.

Bottom line for me, I rank most clogs (bulky, flat, chunky, plastic ones) right up there with “mom jeans”!

  2. Hi Joy,
Maybe since clogs are suddenly all in style, I’ll come across a more refined, pretty pair I might like, but at the moment I just find clogs “tacky”.

Love these “clogs” or mules. There is nothing better than a nice pair of boot cut jeans, sweater, and decent looking clogs when driving kids to and from practices, school, and other activities and back home again in between to fix dinner between 4:00 and 8:00 pm. If I couldn’t slip my cute clogs off and on everytime I swung by the house, I could never fit it all in after work.

I thought clogs were dated, but just did a night out with girlfriends and one friend was sporting the cutest animal print clog. Thought it was impossible but she now has me looking for a clog that is as cute as hers were!

Always enjoy reading your very informative site. I have one very positive clog memory to add to this discussion. Growing up, I was friends with a little girl whose mother was from Sweden. Her mother’s classic clogs in bright colors, with a low, alderwood heel suited her perfectly as she wore them around her house and out in the garden. I still find those Scandinavian style ones “cute.”

However, I am not Swedish and any other type of clogs offered in the States always look clumpy and vaguely 1970′s somehow to me. They also sound a bit like you are wearing noisy bricks on your feet, especially if you are walking fast. If people are deeply in love with their clogs, of course that’s fine. But I have to side with Deborah on this one.

  6. Shelley says:

I can see how they clogs would be frumpy, especially the lower heels (that I like cause I’m already really tall), however, when I see a high-end pair of clogs I remember how beautiful some women were back in the 70′s who could put together a stylish outfit using clogs. I imagine wraps like this: http://www.boutiquetoyou.com/category_s/793.htm (yes they are all wearing boots) with another fashion don’t – corduroy pants!

When I was young in the 70′s, my brother’s both had beautiful girl friends with long hair and completely captured the spirit of the fashion during that time – I always think of the blond lady from ABBA, lol!

Anyhow, some of us have more nostalgic connections to clogs. The trick is to put your entire outfit together with care. I think those models look bad in clogs – who wears a short dress with heavy black clogs – ugh.

    Hi ladies,

I’m right there with you and Joy. Looking at these Spring Trend Setters sent me reeling back to the 1970s–Platforms, Wedges, Birkenstocks and Earth Shoes.

    Scrubs and Crocs, anyone?

Want hideous? For starters, try Christian Siriano Payless Spring 2010 Collection.

    ‘Nuff said!

  8. Hi PJ,
Great story.. and thanks for your POV!

  9. Hi Julie
Would love to hear what else she was wearing… the main thing is if you are going to wear a clog, you need to have the right outfit, please tell more….

  10. Hi Mia,
Yes, they can be an easy accessory and comfortable too…It is fun to hear everyones thoughts on them and if and how they wear them!

  11. Sue says:

I wear Dansko clogs about 6 days out of 7 in the winter, and in the summer I wear their sandals! My feet are comfortable, have enough toe room, support my falling arches, etc. – Dansko’s are the official Danish working shoe! I am thrilled that the NA outlet is 40 minutes from my house where they are 1/2 price! I’ve seen what high heels can do to feet and don’t plan on that for my tootsies any time soon!

  12. Hi Sue,
Yup, you are sure right, clogs do seem to be a super comfortable choice for many women! We are certainly aware that many women have foot problems and do not have much of a choice, so clogs are a good option for them. It is just that when we are asked to give our opinion if we think clogs are stylish we have to shake our head no, because they are so clunky and not that feminine. We have posted some comfortable options on other posts, just go to our archives for shoes.

  13. Rabbi Wendy says:

In terms of comfortable, casual footwear, what do you think of driving mocs? They come in lots of colors, are usually comfortable, and come at many different price points. I just saw a Cole Haan pair on sale at Nordstrom for 1/2 price; didn’t buy them, though, because I wasn’t sure I could pull off bright orange, shiny, faux croc.

  14. jill haney says:

I wear clogs every spring and fall and always get compliments. In fact, I own the suede, peep toe pair pictured above. Any woman who says clogs are frumpy doesn’t know what she is talking about or doesn’t buy the right ones. I am 44 years old and they always look hip, fresh, appropriate, and modern. Age has no significance whatsoever on clogs…it is purely the style that is chosen that affects whether or not a woman should wear them.

The woman who equates clogs to “mom jeans” most likely has no fashion sense at all. I have been a boutique owner and buyer for a number of stores. Clogs are cool when worn with denim (not mom jeans) and those in the fashion know understand what a staple they are.
