Fabulous After 40
Fabulous After 40

Fashion for the over 40 woman. How to update your skirt wardrobe.

At the beginning of Spring this year, I (JoJami) decided to give away all my old summer casual skirts that I have been wearing for the past few years.  They were the soft , flowing kind, that have been popular, but I felt it was time to move on and update them!

Here are a few ideas on how to update you casual skirt wardrobe and what to give away:

Just right, this bold print, stiff cotton is Age-mazing!:

Just bought one like this at the J. Crew outlet!  What I love that I can dress it down with a casual t-shirt or up with a nice blouse! Flat or strapy heels work just fine! Love these nude shoes they are showing with it, here!

This skirt from J.Crew is a great one to update your skirt wardrobe!

Too Young Looking :

Do you have a skirt like this? It might be time to give it away. The gathering will cause your middle to appear larger than it is and it is too short for most gals over 40, unless you are wearing it as a coverup for the beach. P.S. Make sure your not “tucking” in your top, it can be aging as well! (Nordstoms)

This is too young and short

Beware! The Long Hippy Skirt can be aging:

If you are still trying to wear this look, be careful! There are a few problems with trying to look like a hippy. First of all, if you want to do long, you should go one of the newer long dresses not a skirt. Next, this look is one that has circled back from our past and our daughters might be wearing it. We over 40 gals, if you want to look more sophisticated should try something more a-line or pencil style, depending on your body type. (Nordstrom)

This skirt can be aging!

I love skirts and these tips are great. Thank you very much

  3. Hi Jenny,
The middle skirt would make “most” women over 40 look fat, not to mention it is just too young looking. I (JoJami) am a size 4 and would not wear that skirt, because there are so many other styles that would look classier and more sophisticated on me. My 20 year old daughter has that skirt and wears it all the time, so I would feel like I was trying to look too young. It is a fine line dressing over 40…we are not trying to be the fashion “police”…just trying to help give “guidelines” to how to dress to look and feel “age-mazing’ amazing for your age!
Deborah and I only put up ideas and examples that feel true to us. We are both on the thin side…so I hardly think we write this blog for only those who have curves. We try to have a balanced approach and most of all we want everyone to have FUN and not take all these “rules’ too seriously!

Why would the middle skirt make you look fat if you are tall and a size 4? Aren’t some of these rules more about body shape then age? It is like this web site assumes woman over 40 are overweight.

Great tip for skirts! I always have problem figuring out which skirt to choose and this is very helpful!

  6. If you have nice legs why not show them off!

  7. I love wearing skirts and this info is very helpful! I have never looked good in a long, full skirt!

  8. Hi Jennifer,
Great questions… An “A”line skirt can be very flattering to those with a pear shape. Will do a post on that next!!

What about for us chubby girls? Pencil skirts on my short, round body make me look even rounder and shorter. :-( Any advice?

  10. Hi Sue,
I ADORE my new skirt. The fabric is so crisp yet, it has stretch in it and is not that tight fitting. Every time I wear it, I get compliments.
    Will post a photo soon!

I like the J. Crew outfit top, skirt, and shoes – nice choice.

What great tips on skirts! You advice is always so on point and helpful. Just the idea that both too short and too long helped me pick a flatering skirt– and retire several others.

Love skirts! Now that I am over 50, and the shorts thing is SO much harder-I buy and wear mostly skirts. Just posted my recent inspiration on my blog–an over 50 adaptation of the cargo skirt trend–altho young–I think the over 40 set can still do!

Good information! I have already figured out that the really long skirts are in the past. Might have some of them altered if it works. That JCrew skirt is adorable and I’ve seen a few other bloggers talking about it also. Here’s a question…if we are not to tuck in do we keep the shirt out and wear a big belt? Then there’s always the issue of my pear shaped body which doesn’t work very easily with many skirts such as the JCrew.

I’d love it if you’d model those skirts. Thank you so much for your great advice.
