Fashion Question, Is this brand too matronly?

Hi Glam Gals,

I wanted your opinion on those pant sets, jackets, tops, dresses  that you see on those shopping channels called CitiKnits.    city knit green

They say it travels well, doesn’t wrinkle and it’s a synthetic fiber.

I’m 45 and love fashion but I wonder if that look is a little old and dated with their matching sets.

Thanks L.

Hi L.

We went to the site and checked them out. We were eager to see them, since all the benefits sure sounded tempting no to mention they are on sale for such a great price.

However, sadly when we reviewed them, we found many of the styles in unfashionable colors and the cut of the outfits were certainly matronly. The “wonderful” non-wrinkle fabric, is just a thin polyester that looked cheap even on the gorgeous model!

We also found some on E-bay for sale with the tags still on them. That tells us that the buyer was not satisfied and is trying to get rid of the items!

We would stay clear of shopping on line and make sure you get to try on the outfit before buying it.

(Send us your style question, we pick several a month to answer and yours could be the next one! info@fabulousafter40.com)

Maybe Citiknits is “cheap” but don’t sway away from Travel Knits completely.

I have A LOT of travel knits in my wardrobe. Travel knits are wonderful for no wrinkles and it’s how you style it to keep it from looking matronly. Adding belts and accessories and mixing them with non knit clothes in your outfit.

First of all I’m 46yrs old and judge if I look matronly.

The first two links here is a more expensive line of travel knit from Boston Proper.

I buy prefer buying all black tops in travel knit because they do not fade

The last two links are inexpensive travel knits and for an example of how you style them with other items in your wardrobe to update the look.

AS you can see I am pro travel knit. If anything just try a black top. Trust me it will never fade like other black items you wash in your machine. Oh another plus…no dry cleaning fees ;)

Just a little bit of a different perspective. Online shopping can be preferable in some cases for those of us with nonstandard sizes. For example, I am very, very short and shop with a limited number of companies that fit me well. I know how they fit and can follow the sales and know what I am getting when I order. None of the companies I purchase from have stores in my local mall.

As a tip for those who do want to purchase something online, always read the comments on the garment as they can tell you if it seems to run smaller or larger. Look for deals with the particular company at the online coupon sites. Remember, the first time you order you may have to exchange it. Some sites also offer inseam alterations for a minimal charge when ordering them. (I have my jeans done this way).

BTW, love your blog and the practical information you offer.

  4. Thanks PJ,
We should know by now, in the fashion world, never say never! So, PJ, you make a good point that some people don’t have a choice and need to shop online. That being said, what we should have said was, if at all possible buy clothes that you can try on first! If that is not an option go to plan B and when you order your item, be ready to try it on at once and return it at once if it is not up to your standards. (good fit, you love it, looks good on you, you can make an outfit with it)
