Glam Gals- What we buy to look Fabulous after 40

JoJami and I got chatting about what clothes work for us and what we buy.

Here are some of our recent purchases.

Deborah: Mainly…. Elie Tahari, Pink Tartan, Diane Von Furstenberg, Tory Burch,Theory….also David Meister, Trina Turk, Teenflo, Akris Punto, Michael Kors (my splurge)

Where Debs shops-90% department stores- Saks, Neimans, Holt Renfrew, Bloomingdales, Macys, 10% Boutiques for accessories.

JoJami: Mainly…DKNY,Yoana Baraschi, Diane Von Furstenberg, Etc., IIsli, Rozae Nichols, …also Tibi, Velvet, Occasional finds at Loemans.

Where JoJami shops-99% Boutiques, 1% department stores

So you see the Glam Gals shopping habits are quite different. I (Deb) like that boutiques offer one of a kind things. However, whenever I shop in a boutique, I fall in love with something… they don’t have it in my size and then they try to convince me to buy the size or color they have because this brand fits small or this color is hot right now or some other excuse. I don’t like that pressure. At least at the big stores, if I want another size or color or I want to return something, there is no problem.

I asked JoJami if she has experienced this and she says that this can be a problem unless you frequent these boutiques.

If you develop a relationship with a boutique owner she will be on the lookout when your size comes in and actually shop with you in mind when she is ordering for the new season. Find a boutique you like and it’s like having your own personal image consultant and you’ll always look very original.

  1. Thanks for the suggestions!

Ladies, In this economy there are not many people who should be shopping the designers and stores you mentioned. A $200 blouse, $400 pair of shoes, or $1,000 dress…I don’t think so.

  3. Hi Ellen,
Your point is well taken and let us clarify our choices. We love to show clothes that have style and are age appropriate, think of them as looking at a fashion magazine. We want you all to be inspired by them not necessarily buy them. There are many ways to shop and we have readers with all income brackets. However, we will try to do our next few postings with items that are more realistic!
    Cheers!

TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Target, Nordstrom Rack, Off 5th Avenue – many ways to find the same great clothes at less expensive prices – also hit your local consignment and thrift shops – you can find fabulous things for next to nothing! My best find ever – a 100% wool Talbot’s winter suit with brass buttons – still had the tags on it – $18 at my local Thrift Shop – and it benefits the local Cancer Hospital! A great way to support a cause, actually 2 causes – cancer and recycling!

I’m a Talbot’s fan myself: always classic, never closed!

I have a closet full of designer pieces, all from thrift and consignment shops, discounters, and clearance racks. It’s the only way to go. I get so annoyed with fashion magazines that show bags, shoes, and clothing for hundreds, or even thousands! Please! Even with a college education and good job, wasting that kind of money is a sin. I’d rather have that extra to give to my favorite charities. And I enjoy the “treasure hunt”. My latest find was two Talbot’s stretch cotton jackets, tags still attached, and a beautiful Ann Klein velvet blazer…at Goodwill. And yes, its green to give new life great pieces.

no publishing How about shopping for those on a fixed budget who have older woman bodies like extra weight in the middle (sizes 12,14,16). , It would be really appreciated. I like color myself because it lifts my spirits and adds to my energy. there is also such a thing a personality in fashion. People have become accustomed after years to certain values and reflect that in their dressing. And as the roles I play in the community change so does what i wear. thanks fran

  8. We think finding things at consignment shops or ebay are wonderful ways to add some fun things to your wardrobe and not break the bank! We are all for it! I (JoJami) just bought 2 wonderful pieces at her favorite local resale shop. I will do a post asap~
