Hit or miss…what we can learn from Michelle Obama
This week over at the Three Tomatoes we found a great article on what Michelle Obama wore on her recent trip to London.
She had some hits and some misses…so we wanted to put our spin on this. WHY does an outfit work or not!
Let’s all learn from her hits and mistakes together….
1.This is the best look of the week. WOW! The bright yellow color looks great on her. It is very today. The simple black overcoat gives the illusion of thin. Simple pointy toed shoes look elegant and elongate her beautiful legs. Look at how simplicity works, no extra jewelry needed. Also, the dress length is perfect on her, not too old, not too young, but just right.
2. This cream and mint green outfit was from J.Crew. It looks great in this photo, but not so great on the news. One problem was the skirt was made of a shiny fabric that showed all the wrinkles.
Remember, fit and fabrication is very important and you always want to play down your tummy area. Normally, Michelle can really rock a pencil skirt when she wears it in a darker fabric that is not shiny.
3. Oops. Lots going wrong here! First off, let’s talk style. Gathered skirts make hips look bigger! This is just not a flattering style on Michelle who has a lovely shape. Preppy meets cocktail?
When dressing you should stick with one theme. If you’re going preppy, you should be at a casual outing, not in London with the Prime Minister’s wife! P.S. Sarah Brown could have used some SHAPEWEAR with that tight blue dress or better yet, a totally different dress. This did NOT flatter her at all!
Anytime you are going to be photographed, try a test shot at home and see how your dress looks on you. You will be shocked at how you look in person vs. a photograph!
4.Here we go again, this time not as much gathering in the skirt, but still not so flattering. This black and white outfit is way too safe and boring. We agree with the Three Tomatoes on this comment… ” The queen, looking lovely in pink, outshone her here!”
5. When your bow is bigger than your head, you can be sure you have gone overboard with the accessories! Subtle is better, if you think your dress or outfit is overpowering you, then try something else.
6. Yeah, we love this dress! The design is perfect. Not too sexy, with the wide straps on the top and perfectly placed ‘V’ neck. Nice and fitted around the waist and hips. Just feminine and classy.

She’s a remarkable dresser. Who knew? She must have been doing this for years before she was really in the public eye, because she appears so natural in all these incredibly diverse outfits and looks. She’s brilliant, she’s got wonderful values, and she is also a fashion icon.
We are sure enjoying her style! She is lovely and classy and we are rooting for her!
This post gets the hits and misses exactly right. If Michelle Obama steers clear of overly gathered skirts, over-the-top accessories and sickly pastels, she’ll be fabulous.
Of course, it helps that MO is naturally great-looking and tall and slim. Even her worst choices look better on her than they would on anyone else. Being slim gives her a lot of leeway.
The First Lady in my opinion has great classic style. Her height and body type allows for a lot of flexibility. She can pull off looks that perhaps women with larger bust lines or those who are shorter would have to shy away from.
Hi Budget Chic,
Thanks for your excellent comment . What we think is universal is her sense of simplicity. As we age, all the fussiness and fads don’t work as well on most women over 40. She is a shining example to remind all of us that in order to look fab, we need to groom ourselves (update hair and makeup) start wearing more dresses, put some color into our wardrobe and keep it simple!
I’m all for the dresses and keeping it simple. Simplicity equates to chicness. So tired of all the mounds of layering in the fashion magazines and on so many young women. It’s exhausting to look at and I totally agree with you.
Appearence and style are important to Michelle Obama. Yipie! However, often her skirts are too fitted for a large hips and the balance between the shoulders and hips is just not right. As an image coach I also often shop with clients. When my client tries a new outfit I always take pictures, it’s a eye opener to see oneself in a photograph. I recommend that exercise to all before investing in a new piece of clothing.
Someone needs to mention to Michele why we descend a staircase at a slight angle.
Miss you gals!
Hi, I think she looks great. The full skirts not something I would have gone for myself but hey, she looks young and gorgeous. Our own PM’s wife needs a few tips – she always looks like she is off to the office and always looks quite boring.
PS – I love your site, great tips on clothes etc although most of the clothes, accessories are from the US, but it still gives me good ideas for shopping. xx
Hi Christopher (aka the makeoverguy)

I think the outfit in number 2 is from J. Crew not the Gap. I love that outfit, wrinkles and all. She is such a stunning woman.
You’re Right!
I know, it does look good…just would like to see her wrinkle free if possible!
Hi Michele,
