How to Dress Casual in the Mountains

Glam Gal JoJami has been on the go for the last year, traveling around the USA spotting fashionistas from all over the country.  Today she is reporting from Breckenridge, Colorado.

Becky Johnson from Hays, Kansas is ready for a day of golf in her casual outfit from Chicos.

Sometimes you have to think small and simplify life!

That’s what our latest lady on the street, Becky Johnson of Hays, Kansas had to say when we asked her what her secret was to looking casual.

With the drama of the mountains, the rugged terrain, spectacular wildflowers, the sheer grandeur of nature all around you, dressing for the mountains has to be simple.

Breckenridge, CO has the cozy, unhurried feel of a quaint Alpine village.  It’s a place that beckons you back to the simple things in life that don’t involve a hand held device. That means you don’t need a lot of clothes but the ones you do bring need to be versitale.

Here is an easy style recipe that you can mix and match whether you are vacationing in the mountains or at home running out to the grocery store.

This simple vest and stripe shirt came from Chicos.

The Simple Little Vest:

If you can find a casual, lightweight vest it will serve you well in your wardrobe.  It’s just perfect for layering for the upcoming transition into fall.  A vest can be worn with straight or boot-cut jeans or with matching capri pants.

The Striped T-Shirt:

The boat neck style of this t-shirt is what makes it work with the vest.  It peeks underneath just perfectly.  The 3/4 sleeve also keeps things looking cool but can hide your arms if need be.

Comfy Pants and Flat Shoes:  Go with an easy care fabric that does not wrinkle and you have a recipe for comfort that will stay looking fresh.  The style of these pants is really flattering.  They have the look of a straight legged pant but are still roomy enough to facilitate your active lifestyle.  Her flat run-around shoes (Merrells) are oh so cute!  Not too clunky and very practical.

Have fun letting your personality sparkle. A crystal necklace can be playful when pared with a casual outfit.

Sparkle, Sparkle:  We like the way she has added a little bit of color and bling to her casual style with this chunky crystal necklace.  Your choice of jewelry is where you can really let your personality shine.  If you like to keep things simple, there is no need for a necklace but it can be a nice touch if you like to accessorize.

  1. I’m sorry, but I have to agree with Charlotte as well. What about a pair of great knee-length hiking shorts or pants (like the outdoor pants from Athleta, for example) and a women’s fishing vest over the striped top? Add a pair of drop earrings or big hoops and skip the necklace altogether. Also, a pair of lightweight hiking shoes or hiking sandals would certainly look more stylish than those Mary Jane sneaks.

  2. Sorry, I have to agree with Charlotte. If I wore this outfit I would feel like I was going out jogging..Capris make me look short and dumpy. I’m 5′ 6″ and 160 lbs..Not for me

  3. I like the vest. It would work well in Texas in the winter, but not the coldest part. I’d like to get a closer look at the shoes! The vest breaks up the horizontal stripe that might not work for everyone.

  4. I like this outfit but wouldn’t wear the vest. I don’t like them. I have very similar navy capri pants I love and Skecher sneakers!

Why do some things I read say women shouldn’t wear capris after 40?

  5. I actually like this outfit but wouldn’t wear the vest. I just don’t like them. I have very similar capri style pants and Skecher shoes I love!

Why do I read some things that say women over 40 shouldn’t wear capris?

  6. She looks very cute and wore the right shoes with this outfit. It looks like something that would be comfortable to wear traveling. I need to give some though to ‘traveling’ outfits. I hate to look like a bum…but I want to be comfortable, too. Do you have any ideas for what to wear for a full day of traveling in a car? Thanks!

  7. When you are in the mountains the look is very very relaxed. We were seeing mostly jeans, jeans jeans and when we saw this gal in her crisp outfit we were pleasanlty surprised. The vest and striped shirt is really updated and the fabric is comfy yet has clean lines, no wrinkles. Her haircut is updated and so were her glasses… we think she looks terrific!

  8. Nice post. It helps to get rich look. :-)

Sorry, but I have to disagree (for once). To me, this outfit is just a summer version of sweats & sneakers. Dull, and just a hair’s breadth away from sloppy. The lady wearing it is attractive and the stylish hair and accessories are what save her from looking like just another housewife who pulled on what was comfortable–but not the least bit stylish, mountains or not.
