10 Ways to Dress Sexy on Valentine’s Day Without Letting it All Hang Out

boomer couple romanticGoing out for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner and want to look sexy, but not too exposed?  Here are some tips to look alluring, not desperate at 40, 50 and beyond.

1. Show Some Skin

Don’t wear a turtleneck on a date if you want to look sexy. That Diane Keaton kind of coverage signals stay away. Showing some skin is youthful and alluring. Notice I said some.

2. Just Reveal One a Section

Letting it all hang out in a skimpy outfit is vulgar. Dressing in clothes your teenager would wear clubbing will make you look hard, tacky and worn out. Everything is heading south after all. So where’s the middle ground?

To look sexy, not sleazy or silly, just reveal one part of you body. A sneak peek is better than a striptease! If you have a great bust, try a low-cut V-neck top, but that’s it. Don’t wear a mini skirt with that top. Wear a regular skirt, like a knee-length pencil skirt and put all the focus up top. It’s all about balance.

3. Fight the Tight

Resist the urge to go super tight to look sexy. Clothes should be fitted, but forget about size tags.If you wear a size 6 when you are really a size 10, you’ll look fat. Clothes that skim your silhouette and have some stretch are sexy. Looking like a stuffed sausage is not sexy at any age.

Sexy is not simply about baring skin or a tight fit! You can look alluring in other ways. For example, a Cashmere sweater makes you look sexy because it is very soft, feminine and touchable. It makes your sweetie want to reach out and touch you, as if you were a fluffy kitten.

5. Learn to Love Leather

Leather  with its raw edge signals power, passion and excitment. Wear it in moderation, not head to toe, or you will look like a geriatric domanatrix! Colored leather is easier to wear than black and looks sexy and modern. A Leather jacket worn over a feminine, flirty dress is sexy.

6. Wear a Dress With Stretch and Drape

The wrap dress is one of my all time favorite sexy dresses. It’s usually made from soft silk or jersey and the gentle wrap hugs your body and highlights your curves.

7. Animal Prints Bring Out the Tiger

Put a little tiger in his tank with a touch of the wild. Any kind of animal print like an animal print scarf or pair or pumps is enough to get him roaring.

Here’s a trick from the material girl herself. Madonna has stopped wearing cone bras, but still wants to look sexy, so recently she has taken a shine to satin. Shiny fabrics lie this allow her to be a little more modestly dressed, but still transmit a very seductive message.

9. Choose Sexy Accessories

The right accessories make an outfit sexy. Purses that swing, jewelry that hangs down and dangles, such as long earrings or a long necklace that land near your bust, is tantalizing.

10. Try A Smokey Eye

Adjusting your make-up can make you more alluring, just try it and see. The eyes are the mirror to the soul so why not try that dark smokey eye you’ve been reading about to add a little mystery. A dark kohl liner and some smudging will make you look more passionate and playful. Keep the rest of your make-up, lips and cheeks, soft so your eyes take centre stage.

Great article. You’re wonderful and give great and timely advice!

  2. We read more into clothing choices than men do. Leather? Mine says no way! A little skin, show your figure a bit, be tasteful and dressed appropriately for the occasion. Animal prints – lost on most men, I think. Eyes, yes! A little scent maybe, but just a little. Mostly be comfortable in your (well cared-for) skin. Confidence is the best accessory! Nice lingerie is a close second.

  3. I would also like to add that women at any age should 1) play up their best features and 2) make sure to be comfortable. For a special occasion, don’t go with anything you’re not 100% at ease wearing. When in doubt you can always go with some sexy jeans and a great top, dressed up with some sexy high heels.

  4. A nice sexy fit, not too tight or too low cut is always the way to go for me. If you have a nice body, you don’t have to be all “extra” to get noticed.

    • Hi Budget Chic, Right on!!! But fit is important for all types of bodies! We see many women with great figures hiding behind baggy clothes and of course vice versa as well… Main thing is to have the fit skim your body not too tight and not too loose, like you mentioned…
But we like to go “the extra” when it comes to make-up, hair, accessories. It all goes together to look extra nice!

  5. Can you tell me where that purple poet wrap dress came from?

  6. Deborah, recently you posted that red jeans are a big hit on your clients lists, and their wish for Valentine’s day. I found some red jeans, got the sweater they showed with it, but what are you seeing that looks great with red jeans? They are “attention grabbers” on their own! thanks, Jan

PS Got the ebook on Chic on the Cheap, and loved it, thanks for the Valentine’s day sale!

  7. Thumbs up for this post! It covered almost everything each girl should know before doing out on a Valentines date. Your man will be pleased to see a glamorous woman after following this tips.

  8. Too much skin can look quite desperate.

  9. My hubby and I are celebrating our 19th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day and I’ll be thinking of what to wear and not to wear so these points helped-thanks!

  10. Great tips, not only for those of us over 40! But do men really like animal print? I’m not so sure…

    • Hi Nanne, Good question…Do men really like animal print? Probably depends on the man. You should ask them! We have to dress for ourselves first. Animal print really just says, “I’m a little wild!”… so if you do just a touch of it, like just a shoe or a scarf or a purse (one at a time!) then it can be super fun! When worn in large doses it goes a little too in your face.

  11. Revealing too much and letting it all hang out. No, not at any age. Where’s the mystery?

  12. Those are great tips! Thanks!

  13. With my man, sexy is me in my Blue Jeans. Nice fit, nice curves…. a little cleavage and we’re good to go!

  14. Should anyone of any age be wearing a very revealing dress to dinner?

    • ellethemagnanimous says:

No. It looks terrible on anyone. I think 18 year olds look as desperate as 40 year olds who are wearing too low, too tight clothes. You might be firm at 18 or 20 but you will still look cheap and tawdry.
