How To Wear Pantyhose, Leggings and Tights Over 40

Pantyhose with red shoesThis is a sponsored post brought to you by No nonsense. All opinions are 100% mine.

I receive many emails from readers asking for advice on pantyhose. There used to be some hard and fast rules about when and how to wear pantyhose but most of them are long gone.

Many businesses no longer require women to wear hose. If you do have to wear them there are now so many more options available.

One brand that came to my attention recently was No Nonsense tights and leggings. They’re affordable and easily to find in food and drug stores.  By adding some stylish leg-wear to your outfit it’s easy to change your look.

Black lace dress with nude shoes

Recently, my reader Laura wrote to ask my advice about which stockings to wear with a dress she would be wearing for a wedding. She described her dress as “a vintage black, empire waist, lace overlay dress with a bow under the bodice.”

Her dress sounded fantastic from the description.  I suggested nude shoes with  nude pantyhose. Nude hose and shoes would make the black dress pop.

Laura hadn’t thought of wearing nude hose with nude shoes. She was thinking of black hose with black shoes. I steered her away from black because she would have been a solid line of black. Her dress would have been lost in the hose and shoes.

Laura was thrilled with the advice. She wrote me back and said, “I’ve continued to wear that look with several other outfits during the holidays.”

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different types and patterns of hose and tights like those from Nonsense.  With tights in every color of the rainbow, prints including herringbone and basketweave, and at a price that won’t blow your fashion budget, it’s easy to find a style and color that looks fab.

I’m also often asked how to wear leggings.

Leggings are a fashion staple for women over 40. They are sleek and comfortable and can be easily dressed up or down depending on what you pair with the leggings.

No nonsense also has an entire line of leggings that come in denim, corduroy, chino, and cotton, with most pairs costing under $20! That means you can splurge on a great top or pair of flats to go with the leggings!

Since many of you say you are confused about how to wear leggings I put together this great resource to help you better understand how to wear leggings over 40.

Could you please tell us some items that are out of style? I have several empire waist and twist front tops in my closet – are they ancient history?

I have been wondering what to wear with a navy blue knee length dress I’m planning to wear as the mother of the groom for an early september wedding. At 53, my legs are not as toned as I would like but black hose and shoes seemed to heavy for a late summer wedding and going bare is just not an option for me. Love the look of nude sheer hose and nude shoes with the dark dress. Perfect!

I am in a dilemma. I am the mom of the groom. My son is getting married on April13th.. I have my dress, knee length in celery green and my shoes are a silver 3″ sandal. My issue is… Do I wear hose, and what color?

Thank you for the tips on how to wear leggings and pantyhose. Being tall, sometimes it is hard to find tops that are long enough for leggings. I do the “fingertip rule” – the top must be to my fingertips when I’m standing straight (I actually prefer it a few inches longer than that).
I will match leggings to shoe/boot/bootie color unless I am in a fun & funky mood – then it’s anything goes!
