Even The American Society touts A 'Look good,Feel good" campaign, the benefits of a well-cared for appearance may be one of the keys to a longer, healthier life too.

Hi,I was just doing a search on line trying to see how to look better after forty and i saw this site.I really think its a neat site to hear that other woman are feeling the way i do.I just turned forty i have four children and a grand child on the way.I really am starting to feel old.I am not happy that i let my self go.I am trying to loose 20 pound and trying to eat right.I don't feel pretty anymore i have dedicated my life to my family and I was in a abusive relationship i got out of.I put myself on the back burner. So i am trying to get my self esteem back and move forward.Sorry i got off the topic some. What i am trying to say is i want to look good at forty any suggestions.

Hi Maharani,
What a romantic story of how women are treated over there. I too had the opportunity to live in France for a summer and had a similar experience. Thanks for your insight!

I lived in France for 2 years in the early 80s, when I was in my mid twenties. What I observed when I clothes shopped there is that salesgirls went to great trouble to help me define my "type" (vous etes le type VAMP), and helped me pick clothes accordingly-they were not there just to make a sale. Further, I noted that the French then had a far broader range of categories considered attractive-you usually fit into one of these categories, and if you didnt, you were a jolie-laide-so most women felt good about themselves, unlike here where really only skinny blondes make it. Finally, each type had admirers-men specialized. I recall vividly one conversation as I was walking along-a very shy 24 year old-"Voila le genre de fille que j'admire". I turned away. The guys friend says, "Mais elle a tournee la tete". He responded-"Oh c'est normale". It made me smile and Ive always remembered it-despite my shyness he admired me, even when I tuned my head the other way-the expected response. It was in no way threatening, just a passing comment. I think these are some very good reasons Frenchwomen are so confident, and these ideas might be worth revisiting here.

Hi Elle,
Sorry to say, many women do feel this way. One of the biggest inspirations for writing this blog in the first place is that both Deborah and I have worked with so many women that feel that they have lost touch of their style and feel there is not a lot of inspiration out there to help them keep up to date. However, we are certainly glad to hear that you are feeling confident! Keep up the great attitude!

Stop caring after 40? That's INSANE. You would have to be depressed to even think up such a phrase. "No one cares how I look." Sounds like resignation that one is unworthy and useless. Only the crazy and clinically depressed don't care what they look like.

Unless you're trying to continue looking 21, upkeep past 40 is not anymore an ordeal than it ever was. Exercise, eating well, a good skin care regimine, hair, mani-pedi, wearing the latest fashions that flatter you and most importantly a good attitude!

Sure, this culture gives more attention to the young women. But plenty of men are interested in more mature women - that keep themselves looking good. And you do not have to be 25 to look good, no matter what Hollywood would have you believe. Look at the French! They believe in and celebrate the allure of mature women.

And if you want to feel good, if you're still interested in romance, don't surrender your feminity and sexy and the alter of ageist attitudes our society holds about women over 40. I know I haven't. I'm over 40 not 100. Why would I want to live the rest of my life as if I was half dead already?
