Rainbow nail colors for Spring 2011- Would you wear them?

I ( Deborah) was just at a networking event chatting with a 50-ish gal who was telling me about her busy psychology practice.

As she spoke I couldn’t help but notice her nails. They were short, beautifully manicured, and painted bright grass green! Whoa- did I do a double take!

I can’t say I really liked them, (the color was something I’d expect to see on my eight year old), but they were interesting.

The next thing you know my sister dropped by sporting baby blue nails….. and you know what?…. they looked kind of fresh!

Now, for a long time I was a French manicure gal (although I’ve always worn color on my toes) because French goes with everything and is low maintenance.

In the last year I’ve been wearing the sleek new nude shades -usually ones that are slightly peachy- pink because they blend in so well with my skin, and look fantastic with a bit of a tan.

The rainbow shades -blues, greens or even yellows , that are so in fashion at the moment, are not for me -( not even for my toes), but they are playful and I can see how some gals would find them fun in a casual  (not business) setting.

When I asked JoJami what she thought of the new colors she told me she had just had her toes and nails painted dark taupe. She said: “Like it on my toes better than my nails. I would not do the blue or green but enjoy it on those who do wear it. I also love to put metallic bronze or gray on my toes.”

Grays, ranging from dove gray to gun metal and metallics are a  little edgy and nice too, if done right.

What does done right mean? With any of these new colors you need to keep your nails short, more squared off and perfectly manicured. That’s the key to looking modern and hip.

JoJami and I both personally prefer to keep our nails short and wear nudes. Our toes, we like to have more fun with!

Do you like the new nail colors?

Would you wear green, yellow, blue or gray — fingers and toes?

What about nude or metallic shades?

  1. That’s a good one. It’s To easy to get stuck in old ways. Things change!

I like the pastels and other offbeat colors. I don’t think there is a Disney-like “age requirement” to go on this ride… It’s a fun look and, as noted above, fresh. The ONLY caveat I would personally hold to is that the look is casual and wouldn’t be worn, in my case, with business or other “serious” attire. Fun with a spring dress or casual weekend outfit.

These colors cycle in and out every several years. As a young friend of mine said, when her parents said that green doesn’t “look natural” : “What? As opposed to RED??”

I had to laugh. She’s right.

Have to agree I get a bit wild on the toes with almost any colour really (maybe not green) & like the subversive black :) as Gigi says, but on ageing hands I think the softer nudes & peachy pinks look best. Having said that at the moment I’ve got a dark taupey brown colour on my fingers & it looks ok but I definitely keep the nails short. That talon look is definitely ageing and don’t get me started on older ladies who go with the little rhinestones & garish designs on their fingernails. Each to their own but definitely not for me. On a different note did you ladies tune into the Royal Wedding, I thought the bride looked stunning, elegant & demure all at the same time.

While the pastel blue and greens are pretty in the bottle, only younger girls can pull off that look. My 20 year old daughter and I have discussed this topic before;she wears the metallics, the rainbow pallette, but I’ve always felt they look tacky on over 30 ladies – like they’re trying too hard…

I do like them but not necessarily on me. I can’t grow my fingernails long enough that they look good with polish so I keep them short and manicured. I do like to have fun with my toenail color, though. I tried green and wasn’t wild about it. Black was fun for awhile (so subversive!) but my favorite color is Chanel’s Blue Satin.
