Should women over 40 lie about their age?

On this morning’s CBS Early Show, More magazine EIC, Lesley Jane Seymour, took on L.A.-based Dating Coach Evan Marc Katz to debate this question:  Should women over 40 lie about their age?

While Lesley argued that you should own your age and help overcome the societal taboo associated with admitting your age once you’re past 40, Evan argued that there are circumstances when it might be in your best interest to not reveal your age. Watch the debate here!

  1. Real Cougars don’t have to lie about their age and that’s because they are comfortable walking in their own shoes. The key is to be secure with who you are and the rest doesn’t count.

No, women should not lie about their age. Lying is a poor way to begin any venture, whether a job or a relationship. If you do gain that boyfriend by lying about your age, and then later he finds out, what will he think? Your trustworthiness and honesty are now in question. Same with a boss. It’s about integrity!

Can I just say, it matters to men if your over 40. In the dating field, the age matters to men. They want younger women. And it’s a shame, cause it’s their own ego they are inflating. In a job interview, you are not to be asked your age. That’s discrimination.

  4. Lia says:

I don’t mind admitting my age at all. Except at work, where I fear discrimination.

  5. Esther says:

I wouldn’t lie about my age, I’m proud of who I am and the great shape I’m in. And I wouldn’t want to deceive anyone. However I know that I am not marketable on the on-line dating sites.Men my age,50, aren’t looking for a 50 year old woman.Like it or not, even the paunchy 50yr old men still think they can score a hot 30yr old.

  6. Sue says:

So he’s basically saying that men prefer women who lie over older women. Hmmm.

  7. Lisa says:

I have never lied about my age because I shouldn’t have to and luckily for me, I don’t look my age (47). I can honestly say that whenever I have met a new person and they find out/ask my age, they are quite surprised. I most often get 37 to 39 as the age people think I am. Must be doing something right (and it is not Botox!) LOL.

  8. bonni Moore says:

I used to tell my age. I was proud of it and always have looked younger than I am.(55)
Most people think I am 39-42. However, it is true that there is age discrimination with men and in the work place so I avoid even mentioning it most of the time. Then it truly is not an issue. In the work place it is illegal to ask so there is no obligation to tell though this information can be found out easily on the internet if someone wants to know. If someone flat out asks me how old I am and I want to tell…then I do. If I don’t want to tell…then I usually say…”definitely over 30″

  9. Hi Bonni,
We love to hear how others deal with that type of situation. Good comeback!
