Have you checked your upper lip lately?
Lip hair (the dreaded mustache).
Yes, the time has come or it will…I promise that you will get some.
It even happened to me (JoJami) recently…. the unexpected lip hair. It was just there one day. Oh good grief, how shocking and depressing, but most of all shocking. NOT ME… and how did it ever get to such a great length.
Now, that I have found one, I am obsessed, I went out and bought one of those super duper magnifying mirrors and I use it. I look into it, daily and go in for inspection..
If I happen to miss a few days, it could be bad…very bad, one might crop up again. They do that, when you least expect it.
So, if you haven’t been up close and personal with your top lip lately.. I highly advise you to go in and take a look. Female facial hair is just not necessary with all the tools that are available.
- Plucking
- waxing
- laser hair removal
- bleaching
However, bleaching as an option is really not that great, since you can still see the hair and why not just get rid of it while your at it, instead of trying to camouflage it.
This little detail can really make or break a Glam Gal.. when you think about it,
lip hair on women is like ear hair on men…nobody wants to have to look at it!
So, if you don’t have a good lighted makeup mirror (Drugstore.com), make sure you run out and get one! It is important to keep track of these things!!

Make sure you get one of these!
What took us so long to talk about this… you know, taking care of the hair, down there~
We might be over 40, but we can’t forget to take our grooming tips ALL OVER! From lip hair, to the bikini line, ladies, we must not forget to keep things trimmed up and pretty.

You get all this, inside!
We found this fun product called:The Ultimate Shaving Kit, that has everything you need (including a detailed instruction booklet) to keep that one particular hard to reach area, all spiffy looking! Not to mention, when we tried it, we were super impressed with the quality of all the goodies that it comes with, from a really nice razor to super soothing lotions. You can shave and be ready to go with no irritation and it even comes with some creative design ideas!!
You will not find this product in stores, yet, so if your looking for that perfect fun girlfriend gift, or want to try it for yourself, you will have to order it online.

Is this firming cream a joke?
We love getting your comments on our blog, but recently we have notice that things are getting a little too serious. (Just check out the pounding we got for our article about pantyhose over at The Three Tomatoes, it seems that some of the women would have loved to bean us with a few ripe ones!)
So, since it’s the weekend and we could all use a good giggle or two…we highly recommend reading the following post about face cream, by Georgia Getz (aka – iambossy.com).
Have you ever felt like a sucker when you’ve gotten home from the store with the next great “instant” wrinkle cream? (We know we have!)
Well, Bossy has a thing or two to say about that!
Seriously, we think she has makes good points.
Feel free to comment below.

Does your hairstyle make you look old?
We recently posted a lovely picture of an over 40 gal looking hip and chic.
After seeing this, one of our readers asked:
“I [have a question] about the old lady hair problem…maybe you could follow up with some more hair thoughts? Techniques? Products? Pretty please?” M.N.
So M.N. we took your question to who else, but The Makeover Guy, Christopher Hopkins!
Here is what he said…
“Dear M.N,
I am currently tackling this problem myself. (I am irritated that my grays are not as smooth as my regular brown).
But what I’m doing is taking medium hair and going back to the curling iron - Eva Longoriaish.
Also…the blonde on Desperate Housewives is sometimes straight sometimes curled…and that is a very relate-able current look for women over 40.
Long hair: Iffy. Even though that is not the popular sound byte, nor what women want to hear, so you don’t tell them because you want them to buy your product, it’s just true. Once hair is past the clavicles if your face isn’t young looking and your hair isn’t luxurious it is often just not flattering.
But extensions do help, and can make over 40 hair look a little less over 40.
The problem is the texture. Texture changes (as does face/weight/body proportions) and just blow and go hair isn’t as easy as it once was. So you kind of have to create the illusion of ‘blow and go’ with products that have protein in them (to strengthen the hair). I like Nigelle’s Blow Make Smooth Essence. This gives a little more strength and polish so you can style it easier.
Also, a reason why shorter hair tends to work better is because it not only looks like you didn’t have to work so hard, but it still looks good later in the day.
But if it is longer, making sure it’s shiny (using the curling iron, flat iron etc) helps. Can look sort of Farrah if you don’t’ start curling at the base first and click the hair through rather than pulling the curling iron to the ends and wrapping it up.”
Thanks Christopher, for your expert advice!!!
P.S. If you haven’t bought it yet, check out his book, Staging Your Comeback... it is one we keep on
recommending, it’s that good!

Remember how beautiful Lauren Hutton was in American Gigolo? Well, the over-40 actress and supermodel wanted a way to stay current in the youth-obsessed beauty industry despite her age – and she’s sharing her secrets with the world!
Her signature line of beauty products and cosmetics, called “Good Stuff,” addresses the issues women have when trying to make up an older face.
Many of us have outgrown the heavy, shimmer-packed formulas that are on the market. Those can really age you! Instead, Lauren has come up with sheer, lightweight products that work with, not against, aging skin. We love how you can choose colors and products based on your skin tone. And what beautiful colors they are!

Let’s have a reality check. Do you look old? How can you tell?
Here are 5 common mistakes of women over 40 that make that make them look older than they are. Could you be guilty of these mistakes?
1. Your shirt is too baggy
Many women walk around in loose oversized clothing because they say it is hard to find things that fit. This is partially true, but no excuse to looking frumpy. In truth, the real reason most women wear baggy clothing is because they fear fitted clothing will expose all their bulges. Not true! Fitted clothing made from quality fabrics skim your curves and therefore fit and look 100% better.
2. Your blush and eyeliner are too heavy
Those cheekbones are not going to appear, no matter how many tons of blush you apply. Less is more with makeup as we age. As for eyeliner, be careful to make sure it looks well blended and is not a hard line. Don’t wear black. It will look too harsh at least during the day. Try brown for a softer look. Once you apply your eyeliner, go over it with some powder on a thin angled brush and blend in the line.
3. Your sunglasses look outdated
Are you wearing out of style or scratched sunglasses? You can spend a ton or a little, but no matter the price, oversize sunglasses with wider sides will make you look current and Age-mazing! Throw out all your old ones and get an update! Find a new pair that make you smile and you will feel and look younger instantly!
4. You are dressing too sexy
That might sound like a shocker to some…but dressing too young, CAN actually make you look older! There’s a fine line once you hit 40, between sexy and silly but FAB after 40 will keep you on track!
5. Your hair is dry and brittle
As we age, our hair starts loosing its luster. To help rejuvenate it, make sure you get a good cut on a regular basis, condition and don’t use too many drying products on it, like moose or hairspray. Finally, buy a SHINE spray to apply styling. Shiny says healthy and vibrant!
Oh and one extra…… YOU ARE STARTING TO LOOK LIKE YOUR SPOUSE!!!! ……. see above, YIKES!!!
To make sure you’re on track with the rest of your look, check out our FABULOUS e-book, The Glam Plan. It will give you all the steps you need to start looking young and hip!
Those pesky gray hairs! They keep sprouting faster than my lucky bamboo!
I ( JoJami) haven’t tried this yet, but my friend Jill says that if you follow these tips, it really helps make your color last up to two weeks longer!
1. Wash hair two times, the week before going in for color with clarifying shampoo (such as Pureology purifying shampoo) which will strip out the hair products that have built up in your hair like conditioner, gels, hairspray, etc. With these products gone the hair follicles will hold the new color amazingly better.
2. At the salon after your hair is washed and conditioned and before drying, give them a vial of Goldwell Colorglow Color finish to apply to your hair. Do not wash out.
You can buy these products at the beauty supply store for a fraction of what you would pay the salon. Example: the Colorglow is $5 at the beauty supply and it would cost close to $20 for the same treatment in most salons.
These two products can make your hair color last up to two weeks longer!
I’m due for a color and so I’ll try it, and report back!

Just before I went on vacation I freshened up my hair with some blonde highlights. I knew that even a day outside site seeing in the hot Mediterranean sun would bleach out my blonde hair, so I took a big hat and wore it everywhere I went.
It saved my hair from disaster, but it made my head hot and sweaty and I had to keep popping my hat off every time I posed for a picture.
When I got home I wondered, was there anything I could have put on my hair ,besides a hat, to save my hair? I emailed our friend The Makeover Guy, Christopher Hopkins, who specializes in hair, and this is what he told me about summer hair.
Hair that has been colored it is susceptible to fading with U.V. rays. There are products that say they have sunscreens but I seriously doubt the benefits as it is pretty difficult to cover every strand top to bottom and all around with sunscreen. And if it’s sticking to your hair, it is likely going to make it flat or sticky.
Hats are pretty much it. And I know the boomers like to believe there is an answer to everything. Cake and eat it too. But alas, coverage is it. If you’re in the sun, the color will fade. Creams don’t get rid of your wrinkles, and there is no weight loss with out a diet change.
Shampooing is what really does the fading, more so than even sun, so shampooing less is always a better way of preserving color. Try rinsing and using conditioner to cleanse.
I don’t really see any more problems with hair in the summer than with the winter. Just slightly different with humidity changes. Good or bad for curly or straight depending on how curly or how straight and how curly or how straight you WANT your hair compared to how curly or straight it is in the humidity (or lack of).
Damaged hair cannot be corrected, it can be band aided. It can be temporarily given the illusion of repair through styling, pressing the cuticle flat with heat or rollers. It can be temporarily filled in with products like protein, moisture, fillers (like hair color and clear sealers).
Chlorine doesn’t turn blonde hair green, it is copper, usually found in algae deterrents in hot tubs, pools, etc. The turquoise color combined with the yellow blonde makes, what? GREEN! You will need to open the cuticle of the hair with a detoxifying shampoo (several times) and heat and strip it out, then condition like hell. Again, that’s why there are swim caps and conditioner. I say wet the hair, put on a good conditioning treatment and think of that time as a multi tasking deep conditioning treatment.
There is so much going on these days, it is hard to sometimes just stop and think, “What should I be doing to update myself?”

Anyway, where do you go to get info like that?
Read on, and take a look at our summer check list for women over 40… and make sure your on top of things to stay looking chic!
Are you wearing your tennis shoes around town?
Unless Your Maria Sharapova, there is no excuse to wear tennis shoes while out and about. With so many comfy flat shoe options these days why not try a comfortable flat or even a sneaker flat, both of which will have your legs looking better already.
Think Your Shorts Make You Look Short?
They probably do! Longer Shorts, which are more flattering on us, have they tendency to make most silhouettes look short and frumpy! Try exchanging your shorts for a flowy skirt or a sun dress. Both can be just as comfortable and so much more flattering and best of all will keep you cool!
What’s Happening on Your Upper Lip?
Have you been noticing a little extra hair on your lip lately? You really have to look close to see it, and look from the side view too! Yikes, it pops up all of a sudden, before you know it. It sad, but true, that it seems as though as we get a bit older our lip hair becomes more obvious. Try a simple waxing or Laser Hair Removal to rid you of that unwanted hair.
What’s In Your Wallet?
More importantly what does the outside of your wallet look like? Is it fat and bulgy? More people see your wallet then you think! Why not show off a little fashion sense in your accessories with a sleek new wallet. A great wallet looks chic on anyone!
How is your hair?
Have you found that your just pulling it back in a ponytail all the time, or just stuck in a hair rut? Be brave and bold and get out of your comfort zone. Start researching and imagining new ideas for your hair, go to a new salon, and have fun!

Ever look in the mirror and wonder where your eyebrows are disappearing to? JoJami and I were talking about this and we’ve both noticed that our eyebrows seem to be getting patchy and they are starting to fade out around the middle of our eye.
Just read an article called Beauty over 40: 5 Things they don’t tell you about Aging and apparently this is very common, along with getting hair on your face, having your ears and nose droop, your gums shrink and your hands get veiny and spotty! What’s a gal to do?
Well if you want eyebrows as beautiful as Sharon Stone’s, we’ve found a good brow pencil works well, but you must combine it with some powder. (When a make-up artist first told us this we thought it was a sales job, but since we’ve been using pencil plus powder, we see the point.)
The trick is you have to make sure to have a light hand and use soft, feathery strokes when applying the pencil or else you’ll get that fake, painted on look all your old aunties had when you were a little girl.
We prefer a color that’s just a tad lighter than our own brow. JoJami is a brunette and she likes Nars pencil in Jodhpur and a touch of brown eyeshadow. I’m blonde and I like Laura Mericer eyebrow pencil in blonde combined with Laura Mercier brow powder duo in deep blonde.
Once you’ve filled in your brows with pencil use a stiff brow brush that is angled at the tip to gently layer some powder over top. Be careful to use just a touch of powder (it’s easy to overdo it) Why bother with the powder? It adheres to the liner and makes your eyeliner stay on longer, plus it gives your brow more of a 3d look instead of being a flat line.
We guarantee that if you start using a little brow pencil and powder and you’ll be amazed how much it gives your face a lift. More defined eyebrows will frame your eyes and bring your face back to life!
We were just chatting about W ‘s latest article on gray hair which proclaims:
“Once the hallmark of sweet old grannies, gray hair is now being embraced by women with a daring streak”.
Suddenly gray hair is chic. We know that growing gray is not for everyone, but it was fun to see a major fashion magazine go to bat for those women who dare to bare the gray.
But just because you’ve decided to go au naturel, doesn’t mean you are off the hook maintaining a stylish appearance. Graying gracefully can actually mean more work.
Gray hair is naturally dull, dry and coarse so you really need to use clarifying shampoos and deep conditioners to keep it looking soft and shiny. And since your hair becomes such a major focal point , you need to keep it crisp and trimmed, and neat at all times.
You also need to devote extra time and attention to your make-up. Fashion journalist, Laurn Ezersky warns, ” Gray hair can look haggy if you don’t wear makeup and look put together”
Here are a few make-up tips for those of you who have decided to join the “Silver Foxes” Club.
Start with a sheer to medium foundation and a dab of powder. As your hair grays so does your skin. It becomes pale, spotty and uneven, so you need foundation to create a smooth base.
A good undereye concealer is a must for women with gray hair.
Make sure eyebrows are well defined with a light pencil. Don’t use black. It’s too harsh.
Keep blush very soft and subtle. Just a sweep of color, otherwise you’ll look old and hard.
Lipstick is key to adding life to your face. The best shades are soft pinks, roses, and peaches. Stay away from anything that screams bright, or anything that is too dark.
Also avoid brown/neutral shades which are too dull and muddy.
Eyeshadow -We love make-up artist Bobbi Brown’s advice on this. She says: “I recommend grays, slates, and white for the eyes, which offer a sleek and sexy look without too much drama.” We’ve found that very soft pink can also work well with gray eyeshadow.
If you are still on the fence about going gray, More Magazine had a wonderful diary of one woman’s six month journey to “get back to her roots”, so to speak.
We also found a great book you should check out called Going Gray Looking Great. It covers everything to do with style and beauty for gray haired women.
It isn’t easy going gray, but the results can be stunning!
If you love to cook you know that to make a truly wonderful meal, you’ve got to start with the freshest ingredients possible.
It’s the same philosophy behind a luxurious new line of beauty products that feed your skin called The Body Care Deli.
Teresia Andrews Maas was a certified financial planner when she first started making herbal beauty products as a hobby. Several years later her yummy, organic, handmade creams have become so popular that she’s had offers to sell them in stores.
But instead of having her nourishing skin creams sit around on store shelves Teressia decided to sell them online so she could give her customers with the freshest products possible.
Some of our favourites- Sweet fennel eye cream, and Rejuvenating Moonshine cream -made of avocado, jojoba and sweet almond oil, plus oil of rose geranium to help stimulate collagen.
Also love the White Tea Body Mist which contains organic ylang-ylang, pink grapefruit and black pepper essential oils.
Sounds so nutritious and delicious for your skin!
