Elizabeth Taylor, one of our favorite Glam Gals, passed away this morning. She was surrounded by her family when she died of congestive heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA.
The legendary Hollywood film goddess with striking violet eyes will never be forgotten for her stunning beauty and her compassionate and tireless work for charity, including Aids fundraising.
Her son Michael Wilding summed it up saying, “My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest with great passion, humor and love. We know quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade , her spirit will always be with us and her love will live forever in our hearts.”
Elizabeth we salute you. You once said, “I don’t pretend to be an ordinary housewife”, and you sure weren’t. You were always a glamorous movie star, and those are few and far between these days!
Another famous quote from Liz….“Big girls need big diamonds.” This Glam Gal loved her jewelry!
We got a great question the other day from a gal named Anne we wanted to share.

Showing her legs off in a skirt she can totally pull off
My single most important question for looking fabulous after 40 (or 50, to be more accurate) is how to retain that certain “edge” in the way I dress and present myself to the world while not looking like I’m trying too hard to be hip. Actually, this has always been a challenge, but it’s becoming more so as I get older. Thanks!
The Glam Gals have been out in LA checking out the West Coast vibe and super charged to see so many women out here dressing hip, not too young, too old but just right and looking Age-mazing (our term for dressing amazing for their age)
With the new release of Red Riding Hood coming out today we thought we would feature Director Catherine Hardwicke (age 55) as a great example of dressing updated, yet age appropriate as she navigates the Hollywood scene. Catherine shows her hip edge through her:
- choice of clothing with edgy details
- use of dramatic high contrast color combos such as white and black, and yellow and black
- Updated Ray Ban sunglasses
- & her cool accents like cage shoes and azure blue clutch.
She stays age appropriate by knowing that sexy is not about letting it all hang out after 40; it is about being selective and showing off her “good bits” one at a time. For example, the short black skirt shows off her great legs and looks youthful, but if she if wore it this skirt with a LOW cut yellow top, this would have been too much!

Way to wear bangs and long hair after 40! (Catherine is over 50!)

Taking black and white and making it playful!
Last night Golden Globe awards were once again the show to see if you want to see real Hollywood glam!
Here we talk a little about what they did right! (notice that none of them overdid the jewelry, they kept things simple!)
Our picks for best dressed over 40 actress’s are:

Jane Fonda:
Jane looked absolute wonderful!
What she did right:
~Dress was tasteful but still sexy.
~Her hair is cut in a fashionable style
~Her hair color is not too dark and has natural highlights
~Sheer neckline shoes a little cleavage and yet is not too high either.
~This dress looks does not look like a costume and she could probably wear it a few more times!

Eva Longora (only 35 but looked great):
She is just one spectacular lady!
~Love the neckline, so faltering
~the cap sleeve is flattering on her thin arms. (most women her age would have a hard time pulling those off!)
~Her updo looks perfect with this gown~
~This gown is not made for walking or a night of dancing… it is a couture piece.
Nicole Kidman:
As usual, classic elegance defines her.
~This simple off the shoulder dress is a very popular style these days and can look great on most body types
~The pale color compliments her shin tone and she looks harmonious in it.
~Wearing her hair just simple and straight works to perfection.
~The pin at the neck, gives it a little personality and her own spin on it.
We recently posted a photo of Meryl Streep looking Age-mazing™ in her recent film, It’s Complicated.
It led to this email…
Hi Ladies:
My husband and I recently went to see the movie It’s Complicated. Loved everything about it. Loved Meryl’s fashion style. But really noted her Jewelry . Would you ladies have any idea who makes it? Would love something similar.

Catherine Zeta-Jones always tries to look her best!
Here is an inspiring headline we saw recently:
Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones doesn’t dress down – even when she does the food shopping.
Catherine Zeta-Jones commented: I owe it to my fans to wear my best when I go to the supermarket.
The Glam Gals have chatted endlessly about what to wear to the grocery store and we feel the same way as Catherine does; there is no reason not to try to look your best when you go out.
That being said, you can still look great and be comfortable, but it takes some strategy.
First you need to have your “going to the grocery store” outfit all ready.
This outfit should consist of:
- cute but comfortable shoes or flat boots
- stretch pants or stretch dress
- coordinating stretch top
- if your having a bad hair day, then you will need a cute cap
The fun part is gathering all the pieces, and then finding a special hook or spot where the entire outfit is always ready to go.
Most women don’t need more than 1 going to the grocery store outfit per season, since you rarely run into the same person when you’re out.
However, If you shop a lot ,you may want to have a 2 or 3 slightly different versions of your shopping outfit. So instead of creating one going shopping outfit you would create a going shopping module. Modules are a way of dressing that save you tons of time and money while giving you more versatility. To find out more about how to create your own wardrobe modules you can read our ebook Chic on the Cheap- How to create a wardrobe on a budget.

Meryl Streep is looking Fab, in her new movie, It's Complicated photo credit: Universal Pictures
With the new hit movie It’s Complicated out, we were recently called upon by Rita Truschel of The News Journal, to get our input on the subject of dressing women over 40.
The author states, ” For women of a certain age, chic and fashionable hits a fresh line between matronly and too youthful.”
Deborah and JoJami were asked what they thought of Meryl Streep’s style of dressing in the movie.
We loved it! They gave her an upscale bohemian style. She wore lots of scarves and flowing, fabric in lovely muted colors that really flattered her.
Her hair was on the long side, and we liked it on her that way. Her make up was clean and fresh looking too!

We are sad and disheartened to say goodbye today to one of our generation’s most prominent fashion icons.
Pin up model, movie actress and Charlie’s Angel star Farrah Fawcett lost her 3 year battle with cancer at 62 years old. She was the face (and hairstyle) that defined an era in American pop culture in the 1970s, and won over the world with her beaming smile and bombshell beauty.
She was a true Boomer Babe, and she will be missed.
