Isaac and the Glam Gals

We got a a chance to meet Isaac Mizrahi, best known as the designer who revolutionized the fashion industry by teaming up with Target to launch a collection of chic, but reasonably priced clothing and accessories.

Isaac (who is pretty cute in person!) was on stage at at the MORE magazine Reinvention Convention and was the hit of the day!

He was frank, funny and full of great advice. When asked…….he said…..

Q.  How do you know when You are dressing too Old?

A.  ” The minute you no longer feel sexy”

Q.   How do you know when you are dressing too Young?

A. “When people start looking at you funny like something smells bad.”

………..Doesn’t that just sum it all up?

Isaac was at the MORE convention to promote his new book How to Have Style. He says having great style starts with inspiration and the way to do that is to collect pictures of things you love, put them up on a corkboard and suddenly a picture will emerge of who you are and how you should dress.

It’s a great idea. Kind of reminds us of what you you do when you want to decorate your home.

What other tidbits of wisdom did the Style guru dish out?

Style is 70% confidence! Have the confidence to make yourself the authority of your style.

Style starts with a passion. Then add tailoring and high heels.

Don’t buy on sale. Only a very trained eye can find a bargain. (wholesale is different)

Chic at any age – Really?

beach-readEver notice that that every magazine you pick up these days has a headline like Fashionable at any Age, Sexy at any Age, or Stylish at any Age?

On the surface it seems like these magazines have finally woken up and realized that chic is not an number… that there are lots of fabulous looking, stylish women who happen to be 40+ and beyond.

The phrase at any age is their gentle codename for 40+ and they are using it ad nauseam to suck in the boomer crowd. But the whole thing is really a bit of a joke because these magazines just don’t deliver. They don’t whole-heatedly celebrate women 40+ (with the exception of MORE magazine).

Typically fashion magazines focus on women in their 20′s and 30′s and throw in a token early 40′s celeb or if you are lucky, maybe even a 50+er.  We’ve even seen magazines that show clothes they say are perfect for 50-year-olds modeled on 20 somethings.

People magazine recently did a cover story about Chic at any Age and stopped at 59. What, are there are no chic women in their 60′s, 70′s and beyond? Have they all had it? Are they all a bunch of frumps?

At least one other boomer blogger we know was outraged. Check out what she had to say, as well as read many other fascinating boomer related posts on The Art of Living Well, at The Blogging Boomer’s Carnival # 39.
