Fall Must Have: adding a leather jacket to your wardrobe

Deborah in her favorite blue leather jacket.

"Have had this leather jacket for at least 4 years and I still love it" says JoJami

We Glam Gals always get itchy to go fall shopping around this time of year when the evenings start cooling down and fall starts peaking around the corner.  One of the first items you might want to think about is adding is a piece of leather to your wardrobe.

Why leather?

It’s sexy, sassy and it can really show off your personality!

Not to mention if you choose wisely you will have it in your closet for years to enjoy!

So how do you find out what type of leather jacket will look good on you?

We have collected several pieces of leather over the years and these brown coats will go with most things in our wardrobe!

There are several steps to take to put you on the right track:

Fit and Style  are first and foremost!

Here are some things to think about:

  • Do you want a style that is fitted or loose?
  • What type of collar will look best on you?
  • Pocket placement is key.
  • Do you want zippers, buttons or none at all?
  • How about color?  Do you want a jacket that is neutral so you can wear it more or do you want a more dramatic piece to have a “wow” effect!
Be on the lookout tomorrow when we’ll show you examples of styles that are age-appropriate!

Casual dressing at the LA, Eat Right food festival

JoJami here, just back from the Eat it Make it Grow food festival in Culver City, California.

It’s always a challenge to try to find something to wear on the weekends and there is no better place than Los Angeles to people watch and see what the hip cool ladies are sporting when dressing casual.

Had to share with you a few of the stand outs today as I walked around this outdoor event that brought out the local foodies as well as these fabulous after 40 gals:

Veronica was staying cool while looking hot!

Veronica (age 51) was rocking her strapless top and khaki pants! What made her stand out was the way she pulled it all together:

Here is how she did it:

  • She likes quality accessories and so was wearing this gorgeous necklace right from one of her favorite Beverly Hills stores, Victorian Rose.
  • Of course you know I was loving her fedora (see more on that here).
  • Her oversized straw bag was purchased at another local fair.
  • Her gorgeous flat sandals were from another Beverly Hills boutique called Madison.

Nancy (age 48) was out with her family and teenage daughter. I was certainly impressed that she was looking so lovely in her  Trina Turk white cotton dress, Michael Kors handbag and J.Crew nude wedges.

This Michael Kors handbag gave her outfit a more casual air

Dress: Trina Turk, Sunglasses: Beaujob

These nude wedges are from J.Crew

My favorite handbag and accessory was this...

New trends in hats to help overcome a bad hair day

The straw fedora worn by Jennifer Aniston is an updated look to replace the boring baseball cap for when you are dressing casual.

Dear Glam Gals,

Sometimes I’m having a bad hair day and just throw on a baseball cap. Do you have any suggestions for an alternative?

Thanks!

Sandy G. Austin, TX.

Hi Sandy,

What a great question, something we all struggle with, especially with summer humidity! We love the little straw Fedora as an alternative to the baseball cap for when you are dressing casual.

This straw fedora looks good on most!(Nordstrom)

Over 40 celebrities like Jennifer Aniston have been spotted wearing them bringing some class to a casual outfit!

  • Great with a little tank, lightweight jacket and a pair of jeans for going to the mall
  • Last minute invite to go out, no problem, throw it on and  you will look super chic
  • Add a pair of Ray Ban style sunglasses to keep your face protected from the sun or for the “cool” factor

We found this fedora at Nordstrom for only $18.00!

Here is a quick video on how to wear this trend when you are over 40.

Does this dress look controversial?

Just for fun, the other day we posted this photo on our Facebook page with the comment:

“JoJami’s out to dinner outfit, simple but comfy!  Secret weapon: Shapewear!”

Why did this photo cause such a commotion on Facebook?

Much to our surprise we had a slew of  interesting comments!
Here are a few:

Amelia said, “I always wear shapewear even under jeans~”

Jeanie asked, “Pretty dress, what brand is it?”

Then the big guns got going when someone commented and asked:

“Why is she even wearing shapewear?”

There is still a lot of going back and forth about body image, different types of shapewear, etc… over at facebook,

and we’ve found all the different views and opinions about this “hot” topic quite interesting!

If you want to read all the comments, go check it out our facebook page, and feel free to comment too! (You will have to scroll down a ways but look for the same photo)

My first fall purchase…the ruffle white blouse

The ruffle trend that started this Spring looks like it has some strong legs and will be walking into our closets this fall!

But beware, this is not a trend for everyone and should be analyzed carefully before running out and getting one.

Being over 40, the idea of trying to wearing ruffles can be tricky for several reasons.

1. Ruffles add bulk to your front. If you have a large bust, you will have to be careful how much and where your ruffles are.
Too many ruffles for an ample bust!
Too many ruffles for an ample bust!
2. You will look sweet because ruffles are romantic and feminine. If you have a power job or are trying to project authority, you will want to stick to sharper lines, or stay away from ruffles altogether.
Tuxedo-style ruffles are a better choice under a power suit.

3. Be careful not to over do them. Too much ruffle can be aging.
Minimal ruffles work better for us over-40 gals.

That being said, you can still wear this trend, but you have to be picky.

This fall we are seeing a lot of leather and extreme shoulders.  A little it of ruffle at the neck can soften this look and make it feel more feminine and updated.

Here is a sweet white blouse with just a touch of softness at the neckline. This will work perfectly to replace my old blouse that has started to look tired. I (JoJami) found it at one of my favorite local boutiques in Wilmington, Delaware called Ellie.

How low should you go when showing off your cleavage over 40?

How low is too low? What is age appropriate when trying to dress and be a little sexy when you are over 40?

We ran this photo of a lovely woman in her late 40′s recently, wearing this overall conservative outfit, except the blouse was low cut.

Is this outfit age-appropriate?

Is this outfit age-appropriate?

In the comment section one of our readers wrote in, “…can you please address the question, how low can you go when it comes to dressing after 40?”

O.K. you are right, we have not addressed the issue of how much cleavage is too much cleavage. This is a tricky one, since  there are a lot of things to factor into that equation.

First off, let’s look at Stacey (seen here). She is dressed fashionably, yet conservatively (long skirt and long sleeves, nothing too tight, fabric is not clingy or form-fitting). She is not extremely busty, and so even though she is wearing a low cut blouse, your eyes are not going to her bust because  she has filled the chest area with a bold necklace that draws the eye up. She was also on vacation and traveling, not at work, so we think this look on her is totally appropriate. Moreover, she just happens to be single as well!!!  So, we feel she is dressed just fine and age appropriately.

Now, take that same outfit and put it in a corporate work environment and we would say that she should consider changing the blouse to one that is not as sexy.

Here are some things one should consider before going too low:

  1. Are you busty? (If “the girls” are bigger, make sure you’ve got them into a good fitting bra and you will have to be a little more careful on how much to show.)
  2. Where are you going? (Are you on play time or work time?)
  3. What is the fabric you are wearing? (Is it thin, clinging fabric, or one that is stiff?)
  4. How do you look overall in the outfit, what part is drawing the most attention? (Are you showing bulges in your stomach or waist and how much of your bust is hanging out?)
  5. Where do you live? (Are you surrounded by flashy, sexy women or would you stand out if you showed a lot of skin?)
  6. Are you going out in a social setting? What message are you trying to send?

There is no easy answer to this, but if your gut is telling you you’re showing off too much, then you probably are.

However, we do see many women who have great figures that are hiding behind safe clothes and feeling frumpy.

There is a balance to all of this, and there is not an easy one-size-fits-all answer.

So, if you have a question about how you look, feel free to write in with a photo.
