Taking Fabulous After 40 on the road!
If you don’t get our bi-weekly newsletter, you might not have heard that I (JoJami) has decided to try something challenging…my husband and I have decided to take some time and travel around the country in a motor coach!
Deborah, who is from Toronto, will be joining up with me from time to time and we will keep you posted on our next live event!
This is going to be an exciting adventure for us and the best part is working on Fabulous After 40 is not really going to change much for me, but where I am writing it from sure will!!
I will occasionally be posting about my adventures here but more often on Facebook, so if you have not joined up with us at: www.facebook/fabafter40.
If you have ever traveled like this you know packing can be a challenge. Let us know about how you survived when traveling in this way! Comment below.

Are you considering going grey?
Dear Glam Gals,
My hair is about 75% grey/white and dark in the back underneath. It’s very curly/frizzy and course and thick. My usual natural color (the color I color it) is fairly dark brunette with a tint of red. It’s about shoulder length. I get a lot of compliments on my hair, but it also grows very fast, therefore the roots need to be colored every 2 and a half weeks. I have olive skin and bright light blue eyes. Do you think I should try to go grey and if so, how do you proceed with this without looking like a skunk?
Thanks for your advice.
Debb Masterson
We have turned you over to our celebrity hair expert, Billy Lowe! Here is what he has to say:
Hi Debb:
Greetings from the red carpet here in Hollywood. I must say you’ve come to the right place for beauty, fashion and everything “fabulous after 40!” I’m thrilled to be part of the team for hair, make-up and skin care tips and yes, intelligence does start to show up a little more in these fine years in the form of silver linings here and there. But fortunately, there are lots of options.
First of all – red is a very difficult color to commit to if you’re concerned about grey coverage. Red fades the fastest, needs more routine touch-ups to keep the color true and vibrant, and it’s hard to shift or move the color once its set. I suggest moving into a brunette with highlights. Anytime you use a single process color to cover grey, the regrowth is very obvious because of the single process application. However if you break up the color with subtle highlights, then the regrowth is not as obvious and you can get a little more “wear and tear” out of the color.
In the meantime, try going brunette with subtle highlights. I think you’ll like the results, and I think you’ll be less frustrated by regrowth and in-salon time.
In beauty,
Billy Lowe

P.S.
I’m excited to roll out my Billy Lowe Be Beautifull campaign this year where I’m traveling around the country, working with clients just like you and helping them discover the right cut/color/styling. Many clients may never make it to Hollywood or New York for their own make-over, so this year, I’m bringing the red carpet to you. So if your salon is interested in hosting a fabulous week with celebrity beauty brought right to you, please feel free to reach out to my team by visiting billylowe.com.
Dear Glam Gals,
I need some help. My family is taking family photos outside this summer and everyone has agreed on wearing white. I’m about 15 lbs overweight and the camera is supposed to add ten more, so I always avoid white. Any suggestions on how I can go along and still look nice? Thanks, Ann
Hi Daria,

Here is JoJami in all white... crossing the arms hides any belly bulges!
We understand your concern, but first let’s clear up the myth about “the camera is supposed to add ten more pounds”. That rule is really for TV not a photo. Also it is a myth that all white will make you look heavier. While it is true all black is slimming, if you dress properly for your body type and choose clothes that fit well anyone can look gorgeous in all white.
Here’s a few tricks:
- Wear all white (monochromatic) you will be fine.
Much better to be in all white, than to break it up with white on top and blue jeans or another color on the bottom
- Practice how you are going to stand.
If you can put your hand on your hip, you can help make some definition and not be a white blob. Also, turning slightly to the side and not facing straight front will give you a slimming look.
- Wear a stretchy foundation underneath a sheer top.
Don’t wear something baggy. If you have a tummy issue, wear a stretchy top and then layer with a sheer open blouse.
- Make sure the pants or skirt or shorts balance your body type.
If you are built with a thicker body type make sure your bottoms are wide or have some flair. Wearing straight legs with wide hips will not photograph well.
- Finally take some quick photos of yourself in the outfit you plan on wearing.
Try different styles…see what is most flattering in a photo.
But the best advice we can give you is to just go and bring your beautiful smile! You will be lovely, we are sure!
The Glam Gals
JoJami and Deborah
My husband asked me this morning, “Are you going through a crisis?”
Why would he think that? Is it because since we left the East Coast 6 days ago and have been enjoying the sun in Los Angeles that I (JoJami) have done nothing but complain about how old, wrinkled and flabby I feel since we’ve been here?
YIKES!
Both of us Glam Gals live back East where for the last 3 months we east coasters cover up because it is just really darn cold back there! S0,when going out at night, it really is not practical to dress all that sexy. But, on the West Coast I have found it to be very different. Women really get all decked out with heels and “bling”.
Then there was the incident last night….
Our son invited us to meet him last evening at Nic’s Martini Bar in Beverly Hills to hear some live music, so I put on a form fitting red scoop necked dress, black boots and then thought I would funk it up with a black and white striped wrap.

This hipster bar and restaurant is a trendy spot to hang out in L.A.
We sat down and all around me, walking past us were these gorgeous, tall, super skinny young 20 somethings in really tight pants or super short mini dresses and all of them were in GORGEOUS HIGH, HIGH HEELS!!

This young (20 something) in the ladies' room, looking hot!
Then it hit me. I’m NOT 20 or 30 or even 40… anymore! (Bummer…)
Oh well, when I think about it, I did dress the right “sexiness” for my age and I certainly would have looked ridiculous in a micro-mini! Those days are over. However, I soon realized that the black and white striped loose sweater was too casual, so I took it off. That left me sitting in my red dress but I had not worn a necklace so my chest felt bare.
Soo…have any of you had an “ah ha” moment lately where you feel a little down that your “glory days” are over and you need to be happy just to be healthy?
Even a Glam Gal can feel low. However, it is true that if you are going out, your outfit can really make or break the way you feel.
Here is what I will do different next time:
- I will do my “homework” before going out. (That means googling the place)
- I will wear high heels.
- I will make sure my outfit is youthful, but not like I’m trying too hard.
- I will stop comparing myself to younger women! (I am going to be happy to be me!)
- I will post a photo for you all to see.
When you are going somewhere new, the internet is a wonderful tool. I should have just googled Nic’s Martini Bar before I got dressed and then pushed “Images”. Usually up pops what the inside of the place looks like, and sometimes it will even show images of people there.
We Glam Gals are firm believers that what you wear will and can give you more confidence, energy and possibly even help you have more fun.
It might sound trivial but after last night, I know it is the sad truth for me anyway. I need my wardrobe to be fresh, updated and age appropriate so that I feel great when I go out.
As one of my teachers and mentors, Judith Rasband has said for years:
“The way you dress affects the way you act and feel and how others act and feel towards you.”
Yes, this is what Fabulous After 40 is all about.
Please comment below (under the 4 squares on the right):
Hi Glam Gals,
Should I wear my hair up with this outfit? Should I wear the necklace or scarf? I found this dress for $12.99 at Ross and tried it on with my daughters leggings after reading your articles.
Thanks,
LaAnja Gough (age 50)
You have permission to print my photos on your web page if you would like to.

Does this outfit look better like this or....
Boy, you got a great deal on this dress and it looks terrific on you. We think this outfit works either way and you should enjoy mixing it up whatever your mood.

Or with this scarf and my hair up?
BTW, you really can’t be 50, can you??? You are Age-mazing™ (our special word for looking amazing for your age!)
Oh the joys of aging….I don’t know about you, but this over 40 gal is starting to see some fine wrinkles around my mouth and eyes.
I guess I’m not the only one. Here is a letter we just got this morning from Betty,
Dear Glam Gals,
What is the best thing to do for the fine little lines to the right and left of my mouth?
Thanks,
Betty
Really Betty, all a Glam Gal can do is make sure to moisturize or get filler. That being said, today I will comment on the less evasive of the two. There are so many out there on the market it is hard to decide which ones work or don’t. So, we called on Deborah Chase, from No Nonsense Beauty and asked her about StriVectin-SD.

Does this work for fine lines?
Just so happens I (JoJami) have had some in my cabinet that I picked up and wanted to know her thoughts on it.
She told me that StriVectin recently changed their formula and have done tons of research to make it more effective. Moreover, she found that she had tried the old version and the new and this latest version did indeed work well for her.
Personally, I do have sensitive skin and I have noticed that my skin feels nice and smooth after I apply it and not greasy. I also like that it has no fragrance in it and that it did not irritate my skin.
Another skin care line that I have enjoyed over the years, was Emerita. I liked that it was developed with mature skin needs in mind and that it is made with natural ingredients.

This is Emerita's serum for dark circles.
What other products have you found effective? How about products with organic ingredients? Please comment below!

Tim Quinn, Armani make up expert
What can you do to look younger and updated when it comes to make-up?
It turns out that there was plenty of re-invention and inspiration going on this year at the NYC More conference!
So who better to chat up than, celebrity make up artist for Armani, Tim Quinn while he was preparing for the Beauty Intervention workshop.
Glam Gals: Hi Tim, what can you tell us about fall lip color?
TQ: We are moving away from the “nude” lip and doing lots of plum and mauve. Of course for holiday, red is always popular, but you will want to use a Coral Red vs. a deep red.
Glam Gals: Many of us are seeing that our necks are starting to loose their elasticity, any tips for that?
TQ: Really all you can do is to make sure to moisturize and keep out of the sun!
Glam Gals: What other common mistakes do you see women making?
TQ: You need to change the way you apply blush after 40. Don’t focus on the apple of the cheek, instead apply it higher and up on the top of the cheekbone. Then swipe up and blend toward the hairline. Also don’t be afraid to try a bronzer and use it for softening the jaw line and brighting up the face!

Tim recommended this eye cream from Armani, Creama Nera
Glam Gals: What is your favorite product these days?
TQ: I absolutely adore our new eyecream, Creama Nera. It can be applied under or over your foundation. It even comes with a little mirror so you can dab it on at anytime during the day to keep up with moisturizing! It gives you a little dewey glow that is very youthful!
Glam Gals: We are noticing that our eye lashes and eyebrows are starting to thin as we age, HELP!
TQ:There are some great products out there and they really do work, my favorite is NuLash.
Thanks Tim… it is always get to see you!!!
