Should I Bare My Saggy Arms?

Our reader Jeri is a great example of how you can look Fab after 40 in a one shoulder!

Hi Deborah and JoJami,Is a black one shoulder top  appropriate for a 50+ woman  if paired with something simple like a skirt, sleek ankle pant . What about a one shoulder dress?  I saw this trend in an ad on your website, and  I see it in stores too, and don’t know if I should buy yet another item I might look ridiculous wearing.  If wearable, I think it would be a fabulous warmer weather option for older women now that many of us have arms that are not display worthy.

I know, I know, we should embrace our bodies, but I don’t enjoy looking at my own bulges, cellulite and crepey arm skin. I’ve seen the crepe even on the skinniest and fit older arms. If you can  bare arms and not feel bad about it- more power to you, but I can’t go there. My friend’s daughter calls the extra weight on the arms–Puddin Bags- as if the problem isn’t bad enough.

Thanks for any help, Roxanne.

Hi Roxanne,

The top in the ad (left) is not actually a one shoulder top. It’s a cut out shoulder top and is  certainly age appropriate for the over 40 or 50 set, however it does not answer the question,  “Will this look good on me?” If you have heavy arms, or arms with extra skin, you are correct in assuming that this top will not look good on you if it squeezes your arms too tightly. You’ll need to try it on to see if it holds your arms in or if it squeezes them through the holes. All arms are different and you will not really know unless you try. The good news is that you seem to be aware of what suits your body and that is the first step in dressing stylishly.

As for baring your entire arm in a one shoulder top or dress, we think a lot of women worry too much about this. Naturally your arms aren’t going to be as buff as they used to be after a certain age, but that doesn’t mean you have to hide them. The one shoulder is a great way to bare some skin and look sexy, while still remaining elegant.

Above is a photo that our reader Jeri sent in. She looks stunning in her one shoulder dress and there are lots of gals 40, 50 and beyond out there who will too!  Try one on and see how you feel.

Have you bought a cut out or one shoulder dress or top? How does it look on you? Send us a photo and we’ll  post it.
