It’s Complicated, but we have some ideas to make it easier…

Meryl Streep is looking Fab, in her new movie, It's Complicated photo credit: Universal Pictures

With the new hit movie It’s Complicated out, we were recently called upon by Rita Truschel of The News Journal,  to get our input on the subject of dressing women over 40.

The author states, ” For women of a certain age, chic and fashionable hits a fresh line between matronly and too youthful.”

Deborah and JoJami were asked what they thought of Meryl Streep’s style of dressing in the movie.

We loved it! They gave her an upscale bohemian style. She wore lots of scarves and flowing, fabric in lovely muted colors that really flattered her.

Her hair was on the long side, and we liked it on her that way. Her make up was clean and fresh looking too!

Who was Fabulous (and over 40) at the Academy Awards?

They were Fabulous after 40 on the red carpet last night at the 2009 Academy Awards Show!

We saw plenty of  unattractive, trendy, mermaid style strapless dresses on the younger gals,  but it was the classic and elegant  gowns that Hollywood’s “seasoned” stars wore that made us want to stand up and cheer!

For example:

meryl-streep-academy-awardsMeryl Streep ~ Meryl really nailed it!  What a flattering dress on her, and she finally found someone to get her hair looking good! This is a great example of how to look sexy, but age appropriate.

Her neckline is low, but not cleavage popping. The fabric drapes nicely, but not too much. Simple, sleek, and not over-done (notice the soft make up that is in harmony with her dress!). We love this custom Alberta Ferretti gown on her.

Meryl likes to be comfortable and she looks it, but she also looks glamorous too!

sarah-jessica-parker-red-carpetSarah Jessica Parker ~ Just clocking in at 40, she is one of the new gals on the block. Young and thin enough to still pull off the strapless Dior gown, she darkened her hair so she would not look so washed out in her gorgeous very light mint green gown (that looked white to most).  However, I ( JoJami) loved the look!

The word on the street is that white is the hot “color”. White used to be a no-no because it made you look washed out on TV, but with the arrival of High Definition TV, that’s all changed, and it’s now being touted as the most popular color for celebrities.

The biggest challenge with wearing white is not looking like you are wearing a wedding gown. Sarah’s belt helped tone down this pretty frock and kept it looking red carpet worthy.

marissa-tomei-oscarsMarissa Tomei ~ Here we go again…another white dress.

Marissa, as you can see, has a drop dead gorgeous figure and this dress nicely shows it off. She is certainly on the right style track with her one-shoulder look and loose pretty hair. Take note of the simple cuff on her wrist, the perfect touch, since the dress has a lot going on.

sophia-larenSophia Loren ~ usually one of our favorite style icons was huge disappointment.  Did she pull this out of  the back of her closet from 20 years ago?

It looked very dated  with the pleated ruffles, Lady Di choker and had way too much “froo froo” going on. When you have a body and face of a star, there’s no need to overdo the glitz.

She needed to just let herself shine by keeping it simple and toning it down in the dress and make-up department. Sadly, Sophia  managed to get herself lots of free press by landing on the front page of Billy Norwich’s Worst Dress List and many others!

goldie-hawnGoldie Hawn ~ As a presenter this year, she did not walk the red carpet, however she shined on stage in her taupe gown.

Goldie sure knows what looks good on her and always pulls it off!  At 64, looking fit and bubbly as ever, she wore a neck baring, flowing gown. She might not have been best dressed, but she certainly looked very pretty.

(Side note: Ms. Hawn seems to like wear tight dresses that tend to squash her “girls.” Maybe she needs to try a size bigger next time! And is it just me, or has she had the same hair style since 1977?)

Golden Globe Awards, Fabulous After 40 Celebrities on the Red Carpet !

Last nights Golden Globe Awards was an eye popping evening of one jaw dropping  dress after another! We Glam Gals are SO glad that Hollywood has kept the Glam up. Here are our reviews of what went mostly right, with only few blips on the red carpet!

The main theme seemed to be to wear a neutral  gown, off white, cream, or beige, which, in fact, can be a bit dreary on most women over 40. But on an up note, the strapless look seemed to finally moving on to necklines that are a bit more interesting.

Here are a few of the Age-mazing and over 40 celebrities that showed up:demi-more

Demi Moore looked stunning in her beige gown with rocker studded criss cross straps.  That she can wear vertical lines like that and still look trim is a miracle. We would heed most to beware and , “don’t try this at home.”  Also, notice the double cuff bracelets. This is a very ‘hip’ trend, that we like, but again, needs to be worn with just earrings.meryl-streep2

Meryl Streep in the past has disappointed, however last night she was spot on, looking elegant and better than ever. According to www.wowowow.com, this classy black number, was a  last minute purchase at Saks! Notice, the subtle jewelry. Just earrings, light make up and a coordinating  sheer shawl. PERFECTION!!!sandra-bullock

Sandra Bullock sure looked gorgeous, in her peachy cream frock, that had just the right combination of femininity and sophistication! We think she takes the cake for the best dressed!marisa-tomei

Marisa Tomei really went out on a limb with this dress. Although it does show her sense of creative style, we feel it was a little too much of a casual, pirate look for an evening as elegant as this one! (Don’t you think her hair would have looked better down with her outfit too?)kristin-scott-thomas

However, Kristin Scott Thomas looks absolutely alluring,  and age appropriate with her taupe gown and black accessories. The dress is still sexy, even though it has a high neck.  Her back-swept sleek  hair matches perfectly with the simple and classic lines of the dress. The pin draws your eye up to her lovely smile! You see her, not the outfit!

Meryl Streep is Age-mazing™

Meryl StreepLooks like Meryl Streep has had some help to tweak her chic! She looks Age-mazing™ in this red satin number and the belt is a knockout! Quite a glamorous change from her usual laid back hippie style.

Tyra Banks new Fashion TV show

tyra_banksJJ: Every week my 17 year old daughter and I love to curl up on the couch together and watch Project Runway. Now there’s news that Tyra Banks has the go ahead on another fashion reality show that sounds like a winner.

She has plans to film 8 episodes of a TV series that’s they’re calling a cross between The Devil Wears Prada and The Assistant.

It’s a show about young assistants at a fashion magazine who are out to prove their talents as aspiring fashionistas.

Deborah and I loved Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.

Wondering who the real life devil will be in this series, and if she is over 40, will she be as chic and wicked as Meryl?

Long Hair on Older Women – Sexy or Silly?

Does long hair on older women look sexy or silly?

old-barbie

Christopher Hopkins, “The Makeover Guy” has it right when he says it’s really not about age.”It’s a combination of how young you appear, hair quality, and whether longer hair looks good on you at all, regardless of age. If you’ve never looked good in long hair, you likely never will. But if you’ve always had long hair and it’s still holding out pretty well, meaning it’s thick and shiny and can be worn without a lot of what looks like work, then likely you can still wear it well.”

So true! Nothing worse than seeing a gal with scraggly long hair, trying to hang onto her youth by wearing long hair just for the sake of long hair.  On the other hand, we can think of a handful of clients and plenty of celebs over 40 who look stunning with long hair.

Long hair can look Sexy, but be forewarned. You need lots of time and money for all the super high maintenance involved. Just look at the celebs who are LONG on style!

Golden Globe Star Style!

Way to go to Helen Mirren, Annette Bening and Meryl Streep who all got it right at this years Golden Globes. These women looked looked gorgeous!

The reason? They took the high road. They didn’t try to compete with young starlets by wearing too trendy styles or gowns that exposed everything, and are best suited to 20-somethings.

Instead, they took a more elegant approach, donning classic styles, in rich fabrics and colors, that revealed only their current best features.

Helen looked like one sexy siren in her stunning teal blue gown that highlighted her still beautiful bustline.

annettebenning2007

Annette played up her well toned arms and shapely legs in a chic column gown slit up the side.

meryl-streep-2007

Meryl, (pictured here with her daughter ) looked like a Grecian goddess in a softly draped gown that showed off lovely neck and decolletage(although the nude shade did wash her out a little- a hint of color would have made Meryl look even more fabulous).

The style lesson here: You CAN be just as gorgeous (if not more) in the “second chapter” of your life.

Keep things CLASSY by playing up your best features now, not the ones that used to be great 10 years ago.
