Are you looking to update your hairstyle? (photo credit/ More Magazine)

Here it is Spring and many of you have written us needing some inspiration on how to update your hair!

This week at More Magazine, they have some wonderful photos of  some great styles that we think you will love!

How do you know if you need a new do? Just ask yourself a few of these simple questions:

1) How long has it been since you tried something new?

2) Are you still using hot rollers?

3) Looking at these photos, are you feeling like you might need a change?

4) Have you been cutting your hair short for a long time? How about doing a 6 month plan and grow it out to chin length just for fun?

Don’t forget that this can be a great time to add some dimision to your hair and lighten it up a bit! Hair that is too dark can really age you!

Nothing like a fresh trim or cut to give your look a facelift! For more ideas check out these Fabulous After 40 hair makeovers!

We have a winner to the More Reinvention Convention

We have our winner… for the FREE ticket to the More Reinvention Convention!

Congratulations to Veronica Cruz from Albany, NY more reinvention convention

She wrote in:

I would love an opportunity to win a ticket to the More Convention.  What an opportunity.  It could not happen at a better time.  Here is my story.

Right now, I’m coming out of a 14 year relationship that derailed many of my dreams.  Fortunately, I found the strength to find my way back to me.  In my wildest dreams did I imagine fifty could be so good?   After my divorce, I thought I would spend most of my remaining years raising my children and whatever was left, hope I would have enough money to manage my way through to eighty.  Today, I can’t even believe that is what I limited myself to.   I’m in the best shape I’ve been in years, I have a fabulous new boyfriend, and the cloud of apathy that followed me for a decade, is gone.  In past two years, I’ve focused much of my energy on reinventing my life, my work and my looks!  You be the judge!

This Age-Mazing gal (Veronica Cruz) is our winner!

This Age-Mazing gal (Veronica Cruz) is our winner!

Every chance I get to push the boundaries of my second act, I take it.  I long gave up the word NO.  That word is just wrong.  It should be banned.  Teenagers don’t like it, kids under the age of six use it too much, and most of all, like a vampire who’s just seen a cross, opportunity crumbles at its very mention.  I focus on positive relationships that respect my desire to be my best!  the Take my marriage for example.  Some might say it wasn’t all that bad.  I had two beautiful kids, nice clothes, a beautiful house, and no facial wrinkles!  But the foundation of my marriage was based on my unhappiness, and that is not the way to Athens.  I was always working double time hoping things would be different.   It was time to accept the brutal reality of my situation and move on.   And the best part of act two, was giving up second place.  I know, I know, today everyone’s a winner.  Hello, this is just not true.  Second place meant everyone else came first; everyone but me.  No matter what people tell you, everyone is not a winner and second place is not just as good as first.  Consistently putting others needs before yours leads to three things: resentment, frustration, and unhappiness.   And, I might add, poor aging.  If I’m good, the people around me are good.  And who are those people:  my kids.  Outside of that, first place is reserved for me to take care of me.  If there is any left over, well, I’m happy to share.

I wish I could share my story with more women.  Part two of our lives can be as interesting and energy filled as part one.  There is no denying there are more issues to manage, but overall, the second half is an opportunity to build on your first act and be even more incredible.  And how lucky are we to have all groups and organizations of women to turn to like Fabulous after Forty and More [magazine].  An opportunity to go to the More convention would give me the chance to expand my thinking on this topic and give me ideas on how I can further push the boundaries of my second act:  not to mention inspirational!

We are looking forward to meeting you and thanks to you all for sharing your stories! Feel free to keep on chatting, below! We want to hear from you all!

Cheers,

JoJami and Deborah

Are You Taking the Time to Enjoy Getting Dressed?

art of getting dressed

Getting dressed should not be a chore, but a lovely ritual

Hi, JoJami here, today and I have a confession to make. I tend to be one of those gals that is always on the run from one activity to the next, always, busy busy busy…

However, a few weeks ago, I decided to actually, slow down and  meet a girlfriend to go to our local art museum, to go see  lovely documentary film about the art of having tea. The film was all about how the Asian culture makes time for the precious ceremony of preparing, setting the table, smelling and slowly sipping  tea. I left the theater feeling so peaceful and serene. Then I thought…

Why not apply it to getting dressed?

So, without delay Deborah and I put together some tips and wrote the following article for More Magazine on “The Art of Getting Dressed”

Enjoy!

Also, please share with us your rituals and tips below, we want to hear them!

Should women over 40 lie about their age?

On this morning’s CBS Early Show, More magazine EIC, Lesley Jane Seymour, took on L.A.-based Dating Coach Evan Marc Katz to debate this question:  Should women over 40 lie about their age?

While Lesley argued that you should own your age and help overcome the societal taboo associated with admitting your age once you’re past 40, Evan argued that there are circumstances when it might be in your best interest to not reveal your age. Watch the debate here!

So ladies…we put the question back to you. What do you think? Please give us your thoughts by adding your comments below.

Do You Need To Update Your Jeans? Take This Test…

These True Relion Jeans are from Nordstoms

True Religion Jeans from Nordstrom

How do you know if you need to update your jeans or not?

Here’s our advice if you tell us……..

1. My jeans are all sizes and I don’t know which ones fit.

Try on your jeans. Get rid of the too small or too large ones, and get them out of the closet.

2. My jeans are all light colored or faded.

You definitely need to update your jeans. Dark jeans are in style and look much more chic! See below for suggestions.

3. My jeans are pleated on top and tight around the ankles.

Yikes, these are mom jeans…go straight to the trash can with these!

4. My jeans have those little bleached  “kitty cat” wrinkles  in them, that were so in style a few years back.

MEOW! (translation: no good). Those are dated and really not flattering. Good for gardening, cleaning the house, and sitting on the couch by yourself, petting your dog.

5. My jeans are boot cut at the bottom.

Good!  Boot cut jeans are flattering on most body types and especially good to balance out a figure that is a little fuller! (We like these from Nordstrom’s.)

6. My jeans are straight legged and  fitted.

These can be great to tuck into boots! If your legs are thin, you are good to go! A sweater cape, oversized handbag and large sunglasses will complete the look!

7.  I’m looking at the new high rise jeans. Should I try them?

Sure, but it depends on your body type. They are in style, and will look great this spring with a pair of wedges and a tucked in top.  If you are thick in the middle, you might not like it. Pears, you will look super!

8. Can I keep jeans with the pre-made holes?

Just saw that Nordstrom’s is showing lots of these types of jeans for spring. Ladies, your teenage daughters are going to be wearing these… so we don’t think you should be too.

9. I have jeans with some little  sparkles on the pockets and some with  fun embroidery on them.

If you want to look updated and hip, we suggest putting those away for now.  That glitzy trend comes and goes and they are gone for now.

10. What about wearing straight legged jeans and flipping up the cuffs?

We’re surprised to see that this is still in style!  If you haven’t tried it yet, it looks best if you wear a little wedge with these jeans to keep your leg from looking stumpy!

To see the 30 best jeans for women check out the article at More Magazine or visit www.shop.nordstrom.com

Please comment below and let us know your favorite jeans and how you wear them!

How To Have Style with Isaac Mizrahi

isaac-mizrahi-and-the-glam-gals1-317x350

Isaac and the Glam Gals

We got a a chance to meet Isaac Mizrahi, best known as the designer who revolutionized the fashion industry by teaming up with Target to launch a collection of chic, but reasonably priced clothing and accessories.

Isaac (who is pretty cute in person!) was on stage at at the MORE magazine Reinvention Convention and was the hit of the day!

He was frank, funny and full of great advice. When asked…….he said…..

Q.  How do you know when You are dressing too Old?

A.  ” The minute you no longer feel sexy”

Q.   How do you know when you are dressing too Young?

A. “When people start looking at you funny like something smells bad.”

………..Doesn’t that just sum it all up?

Isaac was at the MORE convention to promote his new book How to Have Style. He says having great style starts with inspiration and the way to do that is to collect pictures of things you love, put them up on a corkboard and suddenly a picture will emerge of who you are and how you should dress.

It’s a great idea. Kind of reminds us of what you you do when you want to decorate your home.

What other tidbits of wisdom did the Style guru dish out?

Style is 70% confidence! Have the confidence to make yourself the authority of your style.

Style starts with a passion. Then add tailoring and high heels.

Don’t buy on sale. Only a very trained eye can find a bargain. (wholesale is different)

You can check out Issac’s new web show coming soon at www.watchisaac.com

Model Search for Models over 40

model
The face of beauty is changing before our eyes. Advertisers are finally starting to feature women 40+ in fashion ads and on television.

The result- a huge growing demand for mature and sophisticated women.

The Red Model Management would lov e our readers to be a part of their new division of models who are over 40, called the S-Class Division.

They are looking for vibrant, photogenic, elegant women between the ages of 35 and 65, and taller than 5’8″. And get this: No experience necessary!

The first open call will be in New York on April 26th at their NYC offices:

Red Modeling Management
15 Broad Street
Suite 3320, 33rd Fl

At each open call the potential model will be asked to fill out an application, bring a current photo of themselves and pay a $45 processing fee. Participants will have the chance to meet with a Red NYC S-Class agent on the spot.

We asked our modeling expert Judy Goss if this is the real deal…and she said, “YES!, it absolutely is!”

JoJami was in New York this week and got to meet former model, Christie Dinham, the new director of the S-Class division and owner of Fashion How.  “Chrisitie is such a remarkable women, she truly has a desire to help give women a chance to fulfill their lifelong dreams”, says JoJami. If you are interested in exploring modeling or other areas of fashion, check out her site for upcoming Fashion How workshops.

So please, keep us posted…we want to hear from all of you who go out there, and go for it.

Update July 2010- Sorry Ladies we heard earlier this year this agency CLOSED due to lack of business. What wrong with advertisers. Don’t they know that we 40+ GALS  are the clients. We have money and are ready to buy but it’s tough to see products and clothes on 20 year olds and feel motivated to buy them. We need models our age so we can relate!!

The Truth about Tyra Banks and Modeling

We confess, we love to watch America’s Top Model. Its so fun to see the girls in the glamorous and not so glamorous settings, and how they can be transformed from a gauntly teen to a sultry vamp with some great hair, makeup and wardrobe. What is it about Tyra Banks’ reality show that has us all fascinated about the inside scoop of the modeling world?

There is a good chance that you know someone who either wants to be a model or wants their kids to model…but where do you go to get advice on the how, what and where of it all?

Meet Judy Goss, former Ford model/agent and author of the soon to be released book, How to Break into Modeling for Under $20.00.

Judy Gross, model and author

Judy Gross, model and author

Judy has worked in and around the fashion industry for over 20 years, and was surprised when so many people when learning of her past, always had so many questions about how to get into modeling. Moreover, Gross was shocked and disappointed to hear many horror stories of people getting ripped off by so called “agents” and “photographers” who made false claims and took their money with no results. This, and her love to help others, inspired  her to write a book that would bust the all the myths out there about how to get into modeling.

“It’s really not that hard to get into modeling, no matter what your age or size. What most people don’t realize is that you don’t need to spend money on pictures or classes to get representation with a modeling agency. The agents actually prefer people NOT to spend money!”

This passionate mom of twin two year old girls, is committed to her mission to educate the public about getting into modeling that she also has a blog called, Modeling Advice: From Breaking In to Staying In , where she answers questions and give tips to those interested in modeling as well as parents of model wanabe’s … and best of all, its FREE!!

So all you gorgeous fashionistas out there, check it out before you shell out any money and find out if you might have a new career out there ahead of you! (BTW…there is even a section for modeling if your over 40!)

Judy is currently the booking and casting editor of More Magazine. Be on the look out for her book to come out in the summer of ’08, and our upcoming teleseminar with her!

MORE visibility for invisible women

It’s hard to stay motivated to keep looking great when you feel like you are invisible. Let’s face it, past 40 there are very few role models out there representing mature beauty and style… no one to inspire us or make feel validated.michelle-hillard

That’s why we’re thrilled that MORE magazine, the sole publication that celebrates women our age is once again running their annual More/Wilhemena 40 plus Model Search. They’ve just come out with the finalists and these gals are fabulous-smart, beautiful and vibrant.

We love them all including Michelle Griffith Hilliard, a physician, wife, mother of six and a natural cover girl. Now there’s inspiration. She’s enough to shake any 40 plus woman out of a gloomy midlife crisis and motivate her to get going!

Reading over the profiles of these amazing women it is interesting to see that when asked, “If you could go back to your 25 year old self what would you say?”, all of these gals said basically the same thing.

Have faith in yourself, be confident, take chances, enjoy every moment. It’s something that seems so natural to us now, but be darned if we could have lived that message at 25 no matter how many times we were told it.

Thank goodness for this wisdom -  It’s the best gift of aging.
