Look Youthful with Color

Gabriela in the wrong colors - too cool

Gabriela in right colors - warm

It’s a simple, but really basic mistake…wearing the colors! When you wear colors that do not compliment your skin, hair and eye tone you will look less attractive and older than your years.

Proof in point. Here’s Gabriela  in this black and gray top which did nothing to flatter  her pretty face.

When we did a color analysis on Gabriela it was very obvious that she had a warm (golden) undertone to her skin. Meanwhile she had on cool icy colors and cool pink lipstick and blush.

Look at the difference when we draped this warm, earthy scarf around her neck. She suddenly came to life. Her skin glowed her eyes sparkled and she looked better.  All she needs to do is to change the color of her lipstick and blush to a more peachy/warm red tone coral/peachy tone to really come alive. We also suggested she also go red, her natural color or strawberry blonde, because the ash shade in her hair was dulling her down. Read more

Belts are tricky at any Age

Even with a nice figure, this belt is just not flattering

When it comes to accessorizing, belts can be a tricky item to try to add into our wardrobe.

We took this photo of this gal  at a daytime networking event. Looks like this fashionista was trying to have some fun with her outfit and wanted to add some fashion flair!

She gave it a good try, but unfortunately missed the mark on this one.

We are all for showing your creative side, but unfortunately this gold sparkle belt is not flattering or fashionable to wear day or night.

What went wrong?

  • When putting an outfit together, you don’t want all the attention at your midsection.
  • We’ve been seeing large jewels or sequins for daytime, but this belt has  tiny sparkles and therefore looks inexpensive.
  • The casual scarf  ( while a hot trend at the moment) is confusing the “look”… a scarf with some shine or gold thread might have pulled her outfit together better.
  • Wide belts usually work best when used to nip in the waist. They are harder to pull off down at the hip, unless you have narrow hips.
  • Belts are best in black or brown. If you opt for gold or silver they should be on the thin side.
  • Too trendy – If you want to be a daring, put your creative fashion feelings in 1 statement piece of jewelry, shoes or handbag. Most of all look in the mirror and if in doubt don’t wear it.
  • Less is more. Leaving off the  belt  or wearing one that was simpler would have looked much better!

After 40 we need to make sure we are not dressing too young or too old.  See post below for a good example of how to wear a belt!

Oops, this belt throws off the look!

Does this scarf flatter my figure?

Hello Glam Gals,

Why aren’t designers designing for us?  We are still stylish, in great shape, and have money to spend, yet most of the clothing available looks like it is made to flatter 20-somethings.

I am not a career woman, and want casual clothes that are elegant and fun, and forgive some of the natural effects of aging, i.e. a tiny bit of a pudgy stomach and my arms that could be tighter.I’m looking to you for inspiration and to provide me with style icons.

p.s.  I discovered today a gorgeous taupe and gold infinity scarf at Ann Taylor Loft–$34.  When worn just right, it distracts from my tummy that has become an issue in the last two years and pulls attention to my face.  Love it! What do you think?

The infinity scarf is definitely a new "age-appropriate" trend this fall!

Thanks, Michelle!

Hi Michelle,

Yes, your infinity scarf is a wonderful new “age-appropriate trend that is all the rage this fall!

You have great arms, don’t have a tummy, and you look fantastic!!! The color looks nice on you, too~

A couple of notes:  You say you want to distract from your tummy, but wearing the scarf so long actually puts the emphasis at your tummy, so we’d say pull the scarf up higher by your face. ( see example we’ve included)

Also, a scarf like this can look a little over powering with a sleeveless top.., you might like it better if  you  pair it with a long sleeve or 3/4 length top and a jacket or long loose sweater.

Thanks so much for sharing your photo and inspiration!

Cheers,

The Glam Gals

Cheap and easy way to add color to an outfit

We’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about invigorating your wardrobe while on a budget.  The best advice we can give is: accessorize!  Accessories can range from very inexpensive to sky high, but when you’re shopping to update your wardrobe, you should be able to find inexpensive, modern pieces to add flavor to your outfits.

We recommend having several scarves to tie on now and again to dress up a plain tee-shirt, add interest to a boring suit, or even loop onto a handbag for a pop of color.  Scarves are easy to wear and fun to find!  Depending on your budget, you can splurge for pure silk or pashmina with designer prints, or save with synthetic or gauze fabric, or knock-offs (we won’t tell). Here are some inexpensive ones we found:

scarf1 scarf3
Kohl’s: $15 KMart: $9.99
scarf2 scarf4
Kohl’s: $12.50 KMart: $6.99

So suppose you are already on the scarf bandwagon – you have a closet full of them, but no idea how to wear them! We put together this short, fun video to show you a chic, European way to tie a scarf. Now you can wear them with anything!

How to tie a cool scarf

Another Fabulous After 40 Fashion Tip:

One great way to stretch your wardrobe budget or put more sizzle in your style  and Tweak Your Chic is  to add a scarf to your wardrobe.

Here area a few scarf buying tips:

  • Buy scarves that are long and skinny
  • Color is important, make sure to hold it up to your face. Does it compliment you? Will it go with alot of your clothes?
  • Stay clear of “shiney” fabrics. They won’t stay on as well, and can look old fashioned.
  • Most woman have their scarves stuffed away in a drawer or top shelf of a closet…get them out and try them!

If you want a cool way to tie a long skinny scarf, watch this video!
