Another Oscars show, and we were watching for some over 40+ Fashion Inspiration. Too bad we didn’t find much. Here’s rundown of what we saw on the red carpet.
Annette BeningYour gorgeous energy makes you shine, not your sparkly sailor dress.
Sandra Bullock
A stunning dress, but we thought the stiffness of it + the waxy white make-up and tight hair made her look rather strained, and as stressed as she probably has been feeling this year with all the craziness that has been going on in her life. Still, she’s a beauty.
Halle BerryShe’s always said she would never marry again, but this bride like dress makes us think she may now want to tie the knot. Very pretty dress but was it too frou frou for sexy Halle? Your thoughts?
A woman of steel… steel gray that is. We loved this fabulous feminine gown in this strong modern metallic..Bold, and beautiful from Vivienne Westwood. What a figure!!
Helena Bonham Carter Are you surprised?
Marissa Tomei The critics loved this. Maybe it looked better in person?…This 1950′s navy, satin and tulle ballgown should have stayed in Grandma’s attic….yes, or no?
Nicole Kidman Sorry, this dress looked like a fancy folded dinner napkin! Too stiff and pale for Nic. You can’t get it right all the time!
To hear What the Glam Gals have to say about Oscar dresses, listen here:
We’ve often said that if you are confused about what to wear to look age appropriate find a fashion role model and copy what she does, which brings us to a great article we just read that talks about this very thing.
Find over 40 fashion inspiration in chic Golden Globe Winner Annette Bening, or sexy Sharon Stone, natural beauty Goldie Hawn, romantic Jayne Seymour or elegant Iman. Pick a woman who you think looks Age-mazing (amazing for her age, as we like to say), and borrow a few style lessons.
The one things we notice that all these gals all have in common is that that they look classy, confident and sexy, in a grown up way. They are also consistently true to their own unique style. They have strong personal brands!
If you are still unsure about what to wear, aso take a good hard look what NOT to wear. Grab a copy of your favorite hollywood tabloid and study the photos of celebs like…………. who seem to latch onto every goofy, trashy fashion trend in a desperate attempt to look young. Burn these pictures in your brain! Don’t go there.
Ever look in the mirror and wonder where your eyebrows are disappearing to? JoJami and I were talking about this and we’ve both noticed that our eyebrows seem to be getting patchy and they are starting to fade out around the middle of our eye.
Just read an article called Beauty over 40: 5 Things they don’t tell you about Agingand apparently this is very common, along with getting hair on your face, having your ears and nose droop, your gums shrink and your hands get veiny and spotty! What’s a gal to do?
Well if you want eyebrows as beautiful as Sharon Stone’s, we’ve found a good brow pencil works well, but you must combine it with some powder. (When a make-up artist first told us this we thought it was a sales job, but since we’ve been using pencil plus powder, we see the point.)
The trick is you have to make sure to have a light hand and use soft, feathery strokes when applying the pencil or else you’ll get that fake, painted on look all your old aunties had when you were a little girl.
We prefer a color that’s just a tad lighter than our own brow. JoJami is a brunette and she likes Nars pencil in Jodhpur and a touch of brown eyeshadow. I’m blonde and I like Laura Mericer eyebrow pencil in blonde combined with Laura Mercier brow powder duo in deep blonde.
Once you’ve filled in your brows with pencil use a stiff brow brush that is angled at the tip to gently layer some powder over top. Be careful to use just a touch of powder (it’s easy to overdo it) Why bother with the powder? It adheres to the liner and makes your eyeliner stay on longer, plus it gives your brow more of a 3d look instead of being a flat line.
We guarantee that if you start using a little brow pencil and powder and you’ll be amazed how much it gives your face a lift. More defined eyebrows will frame your eyes and bring your face back to life!
How do you stay true to your own personal style but still look modern and youthful?
Justintroduce a little more sportiness into your wardrobe.
What are we talking about…At this year’s AICI conference (Association of Image Consutlants International) we got the chance to hear Alyce Parson, founder of the Universal StyleSystemspeak about this.
A bit of background about her system. Alyce says you can’t know your style unless you know yourself. So she quizzes her clients on preferred colors, fabrics, fits, hairstyles as well as their goals and message they want to deliver. The answers you give determine what style is really you. You can be
Feminine: Soft and Romantic-Jayne Seymour, Princess Diana
Elegant: Refined and Stately-Diane Sawyer, Jacqueline Smith
Classic: Conservative and Businesslike-Hillary Clinton, Jane Pauley
Dramatic: Fashionable and Sophisticated- Diana Ross, Iman
Creative: Original and Artistic-Sarah Jessic Parker, Madonna
Sporty:Friendly and Casual -Jane Fonda, Christie Brinkley
Alluring: Sexy and Glamorous-Sharon Stone, Demi Moore
Most people are a combo or 2 or three styles. For example with us, I (Deborah) am Elegant and Dramatic and JoJami is Alluring-Elegant.
Some styles naturally lend themselves to a more youthful look and some don’t. ie: Elegant and classic can look old sometimes as we age, so to make these styles more youthful, add a dash of sporty. Turn up that collar, push up those sleeves. Take that perfect elegant look or that serious business style and make it a tad more relaxed and friendlier.
Apparently, adding a touch of femininity is another way to keep you looking youthful. You don’t have to run out and buy a wardrobe of frills but Alyce says that femine touches like soft colors, pinks and peaches to compliment your skin can give you a lovely soft glow.
Alyce herself is a gorgeous Elegant-Alluring. We snapped a photo of her for you because at 60+ she has fabulous style and looks absolutely Age-mazing™!
