With so many new fashion trends for fall 2013 how do you sort out what’s wacky and what works?
Here’s a rundown of what’s worth paying attention to when it comes to fall fashion for women over 40.
1. True Blue
This season designers shared a love for the deep blue hue when everything from cobalt to cerulean hit the runway. This is a very wearable color at any age and looks best if you pair it with black for some drama. To get some ideas on how to do this check out my post on punk inspired style ( another trend that may, or may not be for you).
2. Drama in the Details
Shine, embroidery, beading, oh my! Designers added interest to this season’s frocks by playing with texture and intricate detailing. There is enough glitz out there to keep you shining all night long. This is a glamorous trend for the 40+ gal who is ready to take center stage. The easiest way for a mature gal to wear it? …As evening wear.
3. Purple Reigns
This attention grabbing jewel tone adds instant drama to every outfit. Mix and match pieces or dress in head to toe purple for a big impact or check out this post to see how to pair purple with black and gray to create a more toned down, but still chic version.
4. The New Look Reinvented
The 50’s is back and better than ever. For an updated look the key is a longer wider skirt and a nipped in waist. It’s a style for mature women who want a little more leg coverage.
Also, be sure to check out peplum tops. You can wear one with an a-line skirt for a tailored , feminine look and it makes your waist look tiny.
5. Bag It
Structured bags, or doctor bags, are all the rage this fall. Fall fashion shoes include stacked heels (which are oh so so much more comfy that skinny heels for tender tootsies after 40) are fall’s must-have accessory.
6. Velvet Adventure
Add richness to any outfit with a lot or a little velvet. Velvet is also a very sexy material and a great way to look alluring without showing a lot of skin both in the evening and daytime too. This fall you’ll find everything from soft, flowy velvet dresses to structured velvet jackets.
7. Mad for Plaid
Plaid is the print for fall especially at work. If you’re going to invest in a new office outfit make it a plaid print in a menswear look – a structured suit, for example. Keep it business appropriate and elegant for your age by choosing a more subtle plaid in a muted grey hue, and not a bright red tartan.
8. Oversized Outerwear
Exaggerated silhouettes and cocoon shaped outerwear were spotted all over the runway this season. I have a few tricks on how to wear oversized outerwear with appearing huge that I suggest you check out!
9. Touching Textures
Studs, feathers, and fur adorn runaway looks this fall. Go all out with studded pants and fur coats if you have the dramatic personality to pull it off, or simply add a textured accessory to your outfit. This is a fall fashion style that you can enjoy of at any level.
10. Fabric Blocking
Another fall fashion trend is the modern look of color blocking is combined with timeless pieces and classic colors. A new technique has also been spotted, fabric blocking, which combines different patterns and fabrics. It’s modern and age appropriate too.
These are just a few of the fashion trends for fall that can look great at any age. Stay tuned as I explore fall fashion style in more detail in my next few posts.
