Vintage Dressing After 40 ~ On the street in Aspen, Colorado

Took a day off skiing and was strolling in downtown Aspen when I (JoJami)  saw this flash of color in front of me! Deborah and I are always super excited when we see women dressing with color and flair!

This gal who happens to own a vintage shop here in town was on her way to work when I stopped her for a quick photo shoot and some fashion tips on dressing vintage.

She was walking so confidently and when we stopped to chat she was truly enthusiastic about having fun with her wardrobe.

Here is what she said:

  •  I love to mix and match patterns but it can be tricky. You must make sure that the fabrics are similar in that you need to pair winter fabrics (eg. wools, knits, corduroy)  with winter fabrics and summer fabrics with summer. If you mix linen with a wool it just will not work.
  • Wide belts can be flattering on most bodies if they are cut well or have elastic.
  • When wearing heavier weight fabrics your shoe or boot should have a thicker heel or wedge to balance out the look.
  • My mother let me borrow her Chanel handbag, she has had it for years it still looks brand new!  It’s a classic that will never go out of style.
  • My over-sized sunglasses help update the look!
  • Just added this pair of Hunter lace-up boots.  They are so comfortable.

These over sized sunglasses balance out the large pattern in her coat
This classic black leather handbag (Chanel) is not too fussy and so does not compete with the pattern in the coat.
No problem walking in these boots!  These lace-up boots are a a little funky and make her look more casual.  A simple black leather or suede boot would dress it up.
The yellow stripe on the back of these boots take them to the next level!  The wedge mades them super comfy!

She rocked it!! I loveeee that coat! Boots are on-point! I think she did a great job mixing her pieces and dressing appropriately for the weather. I also agree that if you do decide to mix prints to keep similar fabrics together and also keep similar hues and tones together, like JoJami did.

I am over 40, well I’m over 50 and almost always wear vintage. 95% of my dresses are vintage. i love vintage because you won’t see yourself coming and going. My best advice is apply the same rules that you buy regular pieces and go for it, try something on vintage looks best on not on the hangar.

I love her look. It wouldn’t suit me to go full on like that, but I love it. My feeling is older women should go more dramatic in a classic way with their clothes, and that boxy is fine on skinny, skinny women but curvier women should stay entirely away from boxy shapes. This woman is tall and slender so she can go with my fabric, etc. She looks fantastic.
