‘Tis the season for sparkle and shine! This week’s Fabulous After 40 ladies are wearing their best holiday dresses over 40 as well as sporting some casual yet classy looks.
Donna sparkles and shines in her gold metallic and black velvet dress that she wore when she attended an event hosted by the Volunteers of America, which was held at The Plaza in NYC. Although she lives in New Jersey, Donna loves NYC at the holidays. “What a great night! There is nothing like being in the city during Christmas Time; it is simply magical! However, having the opportunity to not only celebrate this fantastic organization, but also meet and greet some very giving, caring and honorable members puts everything in the right perspective for this truly blessed season. This is a picture of me taken at home just before leaving, wearing a black velvet metallic dress. Wearing metallic embellished clothing can be tricky at this age, but I really love this dress!”
Donna, we think you look dazzling! We agree that metallic silver party dresses for women over 40 can be difficult to pull off. We love the way the metallic and black velvet create a nice contrast with colors and textures. Too much metallic can look gaudy. The soft black velvet of Donna’s dress helps to break up the metallic to create a less harsh look than solid metallic.
Keep Accessories Simple with Metallics
Julia, 49, wore this beautiful metallic silver dress to a fundraiser in Bel Air, California last weekend. Julia’s dress is impeccable as far as party dresses for women go. It has great detail and the cut and length are suitable for over 40, 50, 60 and beyond.
Julia traveled from Washington, DC to attend the fundraiser. It certainly looks as though Julia’s dress stood up to her cross country flight. Julia purchased both the dress and shoes at Talbots.
Julia has accessorized her silver dress perfectly with a dark red clutch and a light shawl with heels to match. When wearing a metallic dress, it’s best not to accessorize with metallics. Too much of a good thing can turn bad quickly, and that’s exactly what happens when you wear too many metallics. Choose a brighter, contrasting color for the accessories and keep the color the same for all accessories.
Two Stunning Dresses, Two Separate Occasions
Maha, 50, chose two uniquely different dresses for two separate holiday parties this season. We love her choices and the fact that they are both so different from one another. When choosing party dresses for women after 40, pay close attention to fabrics, lengths, and cuts of the dresses. Maha has succeeded in selecting two festive dresses that fit and flatter her body. We can’t decide which one we like best, Maha. You look spectacular in both!
Metallics aren’t just for fancy party dresses for women. Metallics can be woven into a casual outfit just as effectively as a formal outfit. Here, Mary, from Durango, CO, adds a gold scarf to casual denim and a vest. Mary is excited about her “column of color underneath and gold on top!” The combination of the gold scarf, neutral vest, and belt help to break up the navy in Mary’s top and jeans. Way to accessorize, Mary!
Santa Torres, 47, from Houston, TX is rocking two of our favorite seasonal trends, the boot, and the leather jacket. Don’t be afraid to mix leather colors as long as you have a style element that pulls the colors together. The asymmetrical cut of the leather jacket adds a feminine touch and keeps the jacket from looking too much like a biker jacket. We love your Fabulous After 40 style, Santa!
Dress Up a Casual Top
There are plenty of occasions that require in-between dressing. For those times when you don’t want to wear a dress nor do you want to wear yoga pants, try pairing a casual top with dark washed jeans. Here Sonya pairs a pretty pink, ruffle blouse with dark washed jeans. When worn together, the jeans and top create a look that is neither too dressy nor too casual. We love this shade of pink on you, Sonya. It’s such a soft and pretty look.
