What to Wear When You’re Going to be on TV

Deborah on the set of her TV show Backyard Pleasures

Earth Day is around the corner and both Deborah and I are big gardeners and lovers of all things outdoors!  Deborah produced and starred in her own TV series on HGTV called Backyard Pleasures and has been known to go for more exotic activities like bungee jumping!  I, (JoJami) tend to stick to the more mundane ones, like organic gardening, hiking and kayaking!

Fabulous After 40 and Aveeno featured on The Martha Stewart Show, Friday, April 20th at 10am EST

However, when Aveeno recently asked if I would go on the Martha Stewart Show as an Aveeno Brand Ambassador for her special Earth Day show, I did my own version of high jumping… around  the kitchen, that is!

When you have a chance to be on national TV it is important that you look the part and dress appropriately for your segment.  So, I had to think hard about what I was going to wear.

The producers of the Martha Show requested that I bring 2 outfits that were colorful.

Next, I knew that I wanted to look nice but not too dressy since, after all, this was the Earth Day Show and Martha usually wears just a blouse or top that’s not too fancy.

I also had a budget in mind since I didn’t want to have to buy something that was too expensive.

Here is what I ended up wearing:

Top and cropped sweater by NY and Co. and white skirt by Express.

Little did I know that I would be standing the entire time behind a large table and only my top half was going to show. (I had brought 4 pairs of shoes with me, so I could pick what felt right to wear when I got there!)

Oh, I didn’t want to forget to tell you about my experience in getting my make-up done.

A big “thank you” goes out to make-up artist Deborah Jones who is a true talent!

The make-up artist was a fabulous over 40 gal named Deborah Jones who took one look at me and said, “I’m going to re-do your blush!”  Hmm…this was going to be interesting!  What she ended up doing was putting some light peach blush at the top of my cheek bone right under my eye.  This was a fantastic trick and gave my face a nice lift.  Normally, I put my blush right under and around my cheekbone…so I can’t wait to try this new way in the future!  She did a beautiful job on my make-up, it was very natural looking but didn’t wash me out under the hot lights.

So finally it was my time to go on the set and meet Martha!  I walked over and stood beside her and I noticed right away that she was so tall and beautiful, and had such a calming presence.  She is a true professional and made my job easy.

I was there to talk about the new Aveeno Be An Active Naturals program.  Aveeno is awarding eight $10,000 grants to those individuals and organizations who are in their communities, volunteering, teaching and inspiring!  If you want to tell your story how you are making a difference, make sure to visit the Aveeno Facebook page and enter.

And next time you’re going to be on TV make sure that you are well prepared!  To find out more, check out our Media CD program : TV Image Live!, How to get on TV and look like a star!

  4. JoJami, you look incredible! Slam dunk! I can’t wait to try that blush trick and will be thrilled if it looks half as good on me as it does on you! Thanks for sharing. You’re such a beauty…inside and out!

  5. You totally nailed a great TV look. Will you be able to upload the video to your site?

  6. You look great. I noticed that you always wear you hair up. It looks great on you. Is that something you started doing once you got older? I love to wear my hair up too but was afraid it would appear to be frumpy. When I see how good it looks on you I am encouraged. I am 5’4″ too (size 6).

    • Hi Sebrina,
Yes, I have started wearing my hair up these days for several reasons. Currently, my husband and I are traveling around in a motorcoach for the next 2 years and are always on the move. That means my wonderful hairdresser (Cristi from Robert Cris Salon in Wilmington, DE) won’t be an option. So for now, I’m just keeping it trimmed up at shoulder length and will see what happens with it once we settle down to one place! You should try it! If your hair is not too thick it is easy to keep up with a fresh twist and a few hair pins.

  7. Jo Jami, you look great! Regarding the blush application; I always remember one of the over 40 rules in Adrien Arpel’s best selling book “How To Look 10 Years Younger” -Don’t apply blush to the cheekbones if you’re over 40,it doesn’t look the same as on a younger woman- your face will look sunken and too thin. Whether applying a bronzer or blush, NEVER put it on the apples of your cheeks. Once you hit 40, the “apples” begin to slide south and you’ll end up with blush closer to your mouth! That pulls the face down and makes you look older. Instead, apply it only to the top of your cheekbone, beginning just under the center of your eye and sweeping upward toward your temple. This brings the eye upward, and can instantly take years off your face! I have a thin face and this really makes a huge difference.

I like the shoes, too. I’m looking for a pair of espadrilles that don’t have a sky-high platform. Do you ladies have any posts re:Shoes for Fab over 40′s?? (I can’t wear a high heel due to achilles tendon surgery, but I still want to look great!)

  9. Even though you were standing behind a table, you can’t go wrong with a white pencil skirt. You look great – as usual!

  10. Hi, They are very old BCBG nude wedges.

  11. Okay…but who SHOES are you wearing…they look so cute!? Thanks for sharing your Martha experience!
