7 Easy Pieces to Update Your Summer Style

Many of you have emailed me wanting to know what to buy to update your summer wardrobe?  What are the trends, and which key pieces do you need to look fab? I think the secret to a great summer wardrobe is putting together outfits that look easygoing and relaxed. Nothing stiff or too serious.

That sounds simple,  but it’s a lot more than just throwing on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, so I’ve partnered with Christopher & Banks to show you how to get it right. Here are a few pieces you need to have in your closet this summer, and ideas for how to style them to look casual and classy.

1.  Something White

Nothing says summer like white. A pair of white pants in a crisp or creamy shade is a must-have for your summer wardrobe.  Sure, you can pair white pants with a bright top. But for a more elegant look, try this: wear white with other shades of white, ivory, cream or even soft sand or stone for a tone on tone look. The bonus, a monochromatic look is slimming too! So chic.

2.  Cropped Pants

We’re at that age where shorts can start to feel like something we prefer to reserve for the backyard. So what do you wear when you are going out somewhere casual, but you want to look summery? Cropped pants are a great solution. Look for a pair with tapered legs and choose a longer top to get the proportions right. This cute outfit is spot-on for summer. It’s practical but feminine. Don’t you love it?

3.  Maxi Dress

Here’s a tip: If you want to look modern this summer, go out and get yourself a maxi dress or maxi skirt. Maxis have gone mainstream, and it’s no wonder. They’re a great alternative when a sundress feels too bare. A maxi dress or skirt is ladylike, and it gives you excellent leg coverage. Plus, a maxi makes you feel so pretty. It’s casual, flirty and fun!

4.  Palazzo Pants

One of the best things to come out of the 70s inspired fashion trend is Palazzo pants. These silky, wide leg pants are easy, breezy and super comfy worn with a floaty top and flat sandals. If you’ve been hesitant to try this trend because you associate palazzo pants with wild colors and patterns, take a look at this outfit. These pants have a boho vibe, but they’re quieter and more refined.

If you prefer a bolder look try a bright palazzo pant cropped jumpsuit. Take a look. Palazzo pants are great outfit for entertaining.

5.  Jean Jacket

Sometimes an outfit doesn’t look finished without a little jacket. Blazers can seem stiff, but a white cropped denim jacket in summer always looks sharp. Turning up the collar just a touch does a couple of things. It makes you look sporty (and sporty is youthful) + it frames your face. Throw on a colorful top like this pretty one and a statement necklace, and you’ve got a casual look that’s also quite chic.

6.  Florals

Florals go hand in hand with summer, but the newest ones are dark with bright florals. This cute dark tropical print jacket takes an essential pair of black pants to a whole new level. The vibe is classic, but with a slight edge – just enough to look modern and youthful. This cool linen jacket would also look great over a little black dress. Very versatile! Here’s a similar one in navy.

7.  Summer Skirt

There’s nothing like a cute skirt when you want to show off those legs. Jean skirts are a favorite because they’re casual and match everything. A dark wash like this is a classy way to go.

The pencil style highlights your curves, and that length is perfect. Too often you see a mature woman in a denim skirt that is way too short, and it destroys the look. This is the kind of skirt that looks great with a fun top in a bright color like this juicy green. Hello, Summer!

  1. Just visited the Christopher & Banks website, wow! Classy, well-cut clothes that are on-trend. Nice to have separates. I’d have to get a 6P in the tops and a 2P in the bottoms, glad the giveaways aren’t dresses:-)
Deborah, please have giveaways for people who don’t do FB, Twttr, Instgm, etc. Many people (not just us “oldies”) only have email, and that’s the way we want it.

  2. Love the long skirt. Would be nice to wear to my grandaughters wedding. Also love the white tops, and capris.

  3. As a woman over 40, feeling somewhat challenged, to find stylish yet age appropriate clothes – this site helps me find both clothes for the office and casual outfits for the weekends!!! Thank you!!!!

  4. I would love to wear Palazzo Pants and the last couple of years I have tried on many pairs but can’t find any long enough. I have a 33 – 33 1/2″ inseam. Any suggestions, from anyone?
