Welcome back to the second day of my series, 2 Ways/7 Days. Today I’m styling a black knit dress two ways.
We hear a lot about the importance of a little black dress in our wardrobes, but I find many women are at a loss when it comes to different ways of styling one for maximum versatility. Often we can imagine them dressed up, but we forget that the right black dress styled simply for every day is as easy to wear, if not even easier, than a pair of jeans and a sweater or t-shirt.
Part of the trick starts with a simple black dress and light on extras and embellishments. I’ve chosen this sleek knit dress with elbow-length sleeves. It makes a great backdrop for a couple of different looks.
Black Knit Dress – Dressy Look
A little black dress is almost always appropriate for dressy occasions. Start with a simple dress – your blank canvas – and use accessories to take it to the next level. Here I’ve chosen gold accessories to dial things up.
These strappy gold pumps are dressy and similar to nude shoes; they elongate the leg line. Glittery accessories like these earrings and metallic clutch amp things up even more, and a thin belt defines the waist.
This is a perfect party-ready outfit, but if you changed the gold pumps for black ones, the clutch for a tote, and earrings for diamond studs or pearls, this dress would carry you through a day in the office.
Black Knit Dress – Casual Look
This time I’ve styled our dress more casually with boots. I’ve used booties, but riding boots would do nicely as well. (Add black tights for extra warmth as needed.) Here I keep the accessories simple – a casual scarf and tote and simple earrings.
I’ve chosen a very neutral color palette – taupe and black – which looks chic and sophisticated. Wear this with just the scarf for one look, then add this blush pink long vest for a second, slightly more artsy look.
