Custom Fit Dresses For Women Over 40 – Dress Mavens

Longtime friends Nadine Moffatt and Paulina Zimakas shared a love of fashion and well-fitting dresses but found shopping off the rack impossible.  One size did not fit all.dress-mavens-cofounders

Tired of endless alterations, they decided to take action. They packed up their bags and headed off to Vietnam in search of an expert tailor.

The result was Dress Mavens – a custom dress design company they founded to help women forget about size tags and focus on fit.  Dress Mavens creates dresses that 40+ women love to wear- dresses that fit like a glove and make you feel like a million bucks.

Their strong global partnership in Hoi An provides high-quality, award-winning craftsmanship while giving back to the community.  Dress Mavens proudly donates a portion of their sales to Quang Nam Orphans and Handicapped Children’s Center.

Deborah BolandI was at a blogging conference here in Toronto recently and got the chance to chat with these two lovely gals about Dress Mavens, their friendship, and the inspiration behind their dresses.

Q. Deb: What do you consider when designing a dress for your collection?

Nadine & Paulina: We pride ourselves on creating versatile dresses that focus on the perfect fit, including petite and plus size.  We also concentrate on timeless dresses in solid colors and luxe fabrics that go from the office to a  restaurant with the addition of a few key accessories. They’re ideal for today’s modern woman. Choose your style, design your dress and within 3-4 weeks it will be at your door.

En route to work, Nadine shows how you can wear a summer dress in the winter, pairing it with black boots, clutch, and blazer. The wrap feature on this frock is flattering for the waist, which is a benefit most women love!

Q. Deb:  You’re both 40+. Do you think there is such a thing as dressing age appropriately? What does it mean to you?

Nadine & Paulina: We feel dressing is a very personal thing. If your sense of style is youthful, there are ways to wear a younger or trendy look without looking like a teenager. Above all, if you feel comfortable and confident in your outfit, the look will be appropriate.

Q. Deb: The styles of dresses in your collection are fabulous, and I love how you show them on various body types, on real women.  I also notice each of your dresses is named after a woman. Do you have a favorite that you find yourself wearing time and time again?

Paulina: My favorite dress is my gray Nancy because of the asymmetrical neckline, and ruching across the mid-section. This dress feels unique and transitions from work to a dinner out easily.

Nadine: My favorite is my navy blue Charlie (I’m wearing it below in the kitchen). It’s such a classic staple and is so comfortable! The silk jersey fabric and cut of the dress make it feel like I’m wearing pajamas!

Having guests for dinner? Nadine is comfortable yet chic in her navy Charlie dress. A metal bib necklace and nude heels finish the look. The silk jersey fabric of this dress makes it feel like she’s wearing luxe pajamas.

Q. Deb: As friends and entrepreneurs, what advice can you give other women who may be thinking about starting a business with a friend?

Nadine & Paulina: Being in a partnership with a friend can be amazing and challenging at the same time. Having someone who complements you with different strengths and views can help your business grow, just make sure you feel comfortable being honest with each other. Communication is key.

Paulina still looks polished in her cream Audrey. dress. Paired with a brass statement necklace & a snakeskin skinny belt, she favors the simple elegance of this pencil dress.

Q. Deb: How about a little fashion advice? Many women struggle with pairing shoes with dresses. What do you suggest?

Nadine & Paulina:  We think you can’t go wrong with a classic nude heel. They are by far our favorite and we wear them with almost everything.

Q. Deb: Tell us about your Dress Mavens’ Embrace Campaign. What is it and how can my readers get involved?

Nadine & Paulina: Through our Dress Mavens’ Embrace Campaign, we encourage women to embrace their bodies by posting a photo on Instagram sharing what they have embraced about their body and use the hashtag #dressmavensembrace. For every photo posted, we will donate $1 per photo to a local chapter of Girls Inc., which inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.

On her way out for the evening, Paulina dons the Marilyn dress in charcoal gray. It’s a twist on the LBD and adds a touch of elegance with a faux-fur stole. She loves how the dress follows her curves.

Q. Deb: When you run your own business you wear a lot of hats. What is the most fulfilling part of what you do?

Nadine & Paulina: The best part is definitely when we receive feedback from our clients saying how fabulous they feel wearing our dresses. We do what we do because we understand the struggle and know how amazing it feels to wear a dress that is made-to-measure for your body.

Deborah BolandDeb: So true how you feel in your clothing is paramount to looking great. The confidence comes shining through! Nadine and Paulina, thanks so much for sharing your style and your lovely dresses with us!

  1. I love all of these but, wish more had some kind of sleeve. I have recently moved my weight & shape closer to Paulina’s body type but, still have much upper arm toning to do. So I would love more of these with even more of a cap sleeve or some sleeve coverage. For now with the winter weather I satisfy myself with pashminas.
