Is Diane von Furstenberg Your Style?

Continuing our Salute To American Designers series, here’s a look at one of my favorites, Diane von Furstenberg.

Few could invent a backstory as fanciful as Diane Von Furstenberg’s. Before coming to America, she lived in Belgium and married a prince. But, Tiara wearing and ball-going wasn’t enough for fashion’s early career woman, who traded in royalty’s glitz and glam to become a fashion superstar.

Diane Von Furstenberg Style

Diane rocketed to fame in 1974 when she created the wrap dress, which came to represent a sort of sensual, feminine dressing that women loved. Today, the wrap dress’ iconic status endures- and so does its creator. Here’s to get the DVF look.

1. Play with Prints

One of Furstenberg’s trademarks? Prints. From leopard to oversized florals to abstract, she loves them all and splashes them across anything from dresses to handbags. To emulate this, start incorporating one printed element into each outfit. It’s an easy way to make a statement without feeling too flashy

2. It’s a Wrap

Best known for creating the wrap dress, Furstenberg’s styles often feature soft draping and a wraparound accent on the waist. This is a perfect way to both create a feminine, flattering shape and add a sense of sensuality to your look.

There are many ways to wear a wrap dress. Consider a wrap dress in place of suit separates for a pulled-together yet subtly sexy look.

3. Curves Ahead

Even if you’re not in a wrap-style dress, opt for one that skims your shape for a sensual look Furstenberg would approve of. Choose dresses more often, making them the base of your wardrobe for day or night. It makes you feel more pulled together and ready for anything!

4. Statement Shoulder-Dusters

Earrings that graze your shoulders are a key part of DVF’s look. To keep her ultra-glam vibe, skip all other jewelry (except maybe an elegant bangle!) and go for big, bold, blingy ear candy. Let them be your trademark, too!

5. Crown Jewels

Vivid jewel tones are a cornerstone of Furstenberg’s fashions and with good reason. They command attention and are always age-appropriate. When worn with one of the oversized prints mentioned above, it creates a look that’s almost painfully glamorous and totally DVF-approved! Try having either your top, bottoms, or dress in a jewel tone like amethyst or emerald for an elegant upgrade from basic black.

6. Make a Point

The soft curves of a wrap top or dress are countered perfectly with the strict point of pointy-toed shoes. You can choose flats, if you prefer, or go for something low-heeled- either way, the sharp lines on the front of the shoe will visually lengthen your legs and add some structure to your look.

7. It’s in the Bag

A ladylike satchel, dangling from the crook of your arm, is the perfect feminine finish to a Furstenberg-inspired look. It’s structured enough to go with the sharp, pointy-toed shoes but feels elegant enough to work with the womanly feel of a wrap dress or top. Try slinging one on your forearm to feel chic!

From European royalty to fashion queens, Furstenberg knows clothes. Following these tips, you’ll be just as regal-looking as the designer herself, no matter where your day takes you.

  1. Dear Deborah, I love the dresses from Diane von Fürstenberg. A year ago I bought myself a dress in blue in Munich. Every dress from Diane makes every woman a lady. The bag on your post is one of my favorite bags this season. I have it from Peter-Kaiser, a german Company. I style it with a leather blazer with dark Pants. Greetings from Munich – Martina – http://www.martinaberg.wordpress.com
