Ruffles have been a hugely popular in the last while, so it’s not surprise that they’re now turning up on the bottom of skirts. All of a sudden we’re seeing lots of dresses with flirty, fluted hemlines.
Fall’s new dress silhouette is über feminine. It’s slim like a sheath dress or pencil skirt, but with flounce at the bottom. Some fluted dresses are cute and fun, while others are so darn sexy that they conjure up images of a mermaid or Spanish flamenco dancer.
Here’s a look at what’s out there and what works for us gals over 40.
1. Fun Animal Print
You’ll cut a feminine figure in this darling cheetah panel dress by Michael Kors. I like that this animal prints is more subtle than most, and gradient panels are modern and figure flattering. This dress is a knit which means it had plenty of stretch, and the flouncy hemline adds some femninity and fun. Michael Kors is one brand that ‘gets’ today’s woman over 40. Their clothes are always stylish without being too far out there.
2. Alluring Cold Shoulder Dress
You’ll look hot in this cold-shoulder velvet dress with it’s gorgeous ruffle hem. Between the cold shoulders, crushed velvet fabric and rich burgundy color, this dress is a trend triple threat without being at all over the top.
3. Demure Turtleneck
This easy to wear spruce green ruffle hem turtleneck dress works equally well for a casual office or for a casual evening. The nice soft knit makes it one of those dresses you feel good in all day. It dresses up with heels as shown here, but I can equally imagine it with black tights and booties when the weather turns cold.
4. Not So Little Mermaid
If you have a special occasion or anniversary dinner coming up, you’ll look stunning in this illusion detail mermaid dress. This fabulous cocktail dress is probably best suited for hourglass-figured gals who want to play up their assets.
5. Add Curves with Ruffles
6. A Midi with Flare
This flared hem midi dress combines a midi length with a flared, flouncy hemline, two of Fall’s biggest trends. Oh, and don’t forget that cold shoulder. This would be a great choice for pear-shaped gals who rely on strong shoulder detailing with some flare on the bottom half to balance out fuller hips and thighs.
7. Feminine Play on a Menswear-Inspired Dress
Opposites attract and they’re doing it beautifully in this houndstooth flounce dress that’s a mashup of a traditionally manly houndstooth print and a saucy, feminine ruffle hemline.
How do you like the fluted hemline trend? It’s one of my favorites. I think that red velvet dress is particularly nice, easy to wear and would be great for any holiday parties you have coming up.
