Being a mom can be stressful at times, but as the kids grow up, we start finding more time for ourselves!! YEAH! With our new found freedom after 40, what better way to celebrate than to think of ourselves as, “Yummy Mummys!”.
That is just what my friend Erica Ehm does everyday over at her website for Moms, called the Yummy Mummy Club. In Erica’s own words she calls her site is, “…a playful and cheeky site for modern mothers looking for adult stimulation”. I wanted to join in on the “stimulating” part and so I wrote a special article with some extra-cheeky tips to help all you fun Mum’s out there. It’s called: “Time for a Mummy Makeover!”
Time for a Mummy Make-over?
Flying out the door to yet another children’s birthday party, you throw on faded khaki capris, a loose t-shirt, worn flip flops, and off you go. You’re just so glad to be out of the house for a while!
Warning, according to TV’s top fashion gurus, you should be slapped with a style ticket for looking like this in public.
If you’ve ever had a moment, in between changing dirty diapers and preparing gourmet meals to catch one of TV’s insanely popular Makeover shows, you know exactly what we’re talking about. Lady- You are stuck in Mommy style rut!
So how can you climb out? Whether you’re watching Tim Gunn on Project Runway, Stacy and Clinton on What Not to Wear, Style by Jury, or Ten Years Younger the advice is the same. Here’s 5 top tips to keep you looking like a Yummy Mummy:
- Ditch the Loungewear
Do your kid’s cringe when you drive them to school because it looks like you’ve barely gotten out of your P.J ‘s.? If tired loungewear or frumpy exercise sweats are your mom uniform, then it’s time for a change. Yah, we know they’re comfortable, but they make you look sloppy and old. Plus, they make it all too easy to ignore those extra pounds creeping on.
- Update Your Jeans
Don’t assume your favorite old jeans still look fab. Waist high mommy jeans will make you look like a watermelon. Super low rise jeans that expose your crack when you bend down to peek in the stroller make you look like Britney Spears (on a good day). Low to medium rise jeans flatter most figure types and boot cut or slightly flared will balance out your hips. Dark jeans are an excellent camouflage if you’re still fighting those post pregnancy pounds.
- Slip on a Jacket
When being a mom feels overwhelming, slip on a jacket to look and feel more confident and in control. A fitted jacket over jeans or pants commands attention by adding structure and giving your body a sexy shape.
- Perk up with a punch of color
What is it about becoming a mom that fades our wardrobes to black? Get out of the boring habit of wearing dark colors because they’re easy to match and because you think they hide the throw-up stains and juice cup spills. An easy pick-me up is a new top in fresh fall color like mustard, electric blue, plum or crimson. Stop being invisible!
- Soup Up Your Shoes
Hiding your feet in frumpy, clunky running shoes or boring Birkenstocks? Be comfortable but look hip in a pair of the new fall booties. Ankle boots with a medium wedge or chunky heel look fantastic with jeans or pants, or even paired with a skirt and tights. If you prefer a shoe- try a fun patterned ballet flat with lots of personality.
