How to Match Your Purse to Your Outfit

In some ways, your purse is the most important part of your outfit. It’s like the cherry on top of the sundae that makes the whole thing look just so appealing. Get it right, and you are the height of elegance, get it wrong, and you go unnoticed. With so many styles to choose from, how do you know which type of bag looks the best look best with what outfit?

Here are some general guideline to help you feel more confident.

How to match your purse to your ladylike outfit

1.  A Ladylike Dress: Structured Day Bag

This feminine fit and flare dress is lovely and ladylike. The vibe is polished, proper and classy, so a sleek, structured bag in a classic shape best complements the look. Whether it is made of leather or not a structured day bag should be durable and substantial.

Medium size is generally best for a top handle or over the shoulder style. Beautiful hardware will give your bag that elegant edge you are looking for.

2.  A Sporty Outfit: Crossbody Bag

When you’re dashing off in your jeans to run some errands or have some fun, you want a bag that is easy and no-nonsense.

A sporty crossbody bag is compact and lightweight, and best of all, hands-free. Look for practical pockets and card slots to give you even more utility out of your crossbody bag.

Pebbled leather is chic and sporty. This stone-gray bag is a lovely example of that. Another nice option: this navy Tory Burch bag with the cutout logo medallion and long, knotted tassel mark the flap of a compact crossbody bag. Then there’s this cute tan messenger bag. This style has become very popular lately.

A Casual Outfit: Relaxed Tote

Walking down by the beach while on vacation, or browsing through the shops on a lazy day off calls for a bag that is easygoing and relaxed. A large, soft tote in canvas, leather or straw is cute and casual.

Stripes, perforated leather, and raffia pom poms are fun and add personality to these bags. The wonderful thing about a tote is that it’s roomy enough for anything you want to take along, from sunglasses to a hat, a good book or even a beach towel.

Do you have a favorite type of bag, and what do you wear it with?

  1. I love this post. I was wondering if you think it’s ok to wear patent leather shoes with a bag that’s not patent leather. Also, could you wear a tan purse with nude colored shoes? They aren’t an exact match. I know it’s not stylish to be too matchy matchy but my husband thought the combination was odd and I wanted to clarify. Thank you.
