Style Video~ How to Update a Knit Dress

Recently, Deborah and I were chatting about our favorite purchases of 2011 and how she had fallen in love with wearing a knit dress!  “They are so comfortable, I have started collecting them and now have a few of them in my closet!”

So today we have another How To style video to help you take a knit dress and accessorize it up or down with just a few “tweaks”!

Here is Deborah in her favorite knit dress with some black opaque hose and simple black pumps.

Depending on the weight of the knit, you can wear them in most climates.  Deborah lives in Toronto where it can get really chilly so of course they work there.  I’m traveling around the US in a motorcoach and have been staying in the warm climates but have still had a chance to bring out my knit dress, especially when a cold snap hits!

JoJami dressed down her white knit dress with a long colorful sweater and casual stretch belt.

Trying to dress comfortable when we are over 40 can certainly be a challenge.  We feel that this can be the answer to “How can I be comfortable, but still look updated and chic?”

Why not get that knit dress out of the back of your closet or if you don’t have one go out and try one on!

One note, you will want to wear shape wear underneath to smooth out any bumps or lumps that many of us over 40 gals have!

We like this dress slip version from Cass and Co.

This shapewear from Cass and Co. works perfect under a knit dress to smooth you out!

3 Ways to Dress Up a Simple Striped T-shirt

A few month ago, I (JoJami) found a wonderful striped t-shirt at the Tanger Outlet. I’ve had a lot of fun making outfits with it and so today have 3 looks for you to try by using this one simple piece.

If you want to stretch your wardrobe here is our latest How-to style video to show you how!

Jeans don't have to be pricey, these came from Old Navy.

This simple striped t-shirt $23.00 (Anne Taylor)

A bright pair of pants (Zara) are the perfect pairing with the stripes!

This would be nice for a night out on the town!

Over 40? Tips to look Stylish for New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is one of those rare celebrations when what you choose to wear can really make your end of the year “hurrah” a time to shine.   And if you want to do a little “sexy” it will be just fine.

Oh, that word again, “SEXY”…after 40, 50 and beyond it can be a daunting look to try to pull off.

Here are some ideas, do’s and don’ts for how to get that Fabulous After 40 look to start the New Year off with a bang!

Let’s talk about how to play up your best assets:

Got Great Legs? Then Go for a dress
The easiest way to start thinking about what style of party dress is to first take your hair style into account.  If you have short, sporty hair then go for a style of dress that is simple and classic (no lace!) If you have soft curls or long hair then go for a more romantic look with flowing fabric like this pretty red dress. Showing off your legs is simple when you have a plan in place! (Nordstom).
Party in Pants! You can still have fun if you wear pants like this soft and sultry velvet pants suite (Spiegel).  The pretty bow will bring out the flirty feminine side of you.  You can fill the scoop neckline with some sparkly baubles!

Sultry Slimming Arms  Don’t like your arms?  Then just cover them, ever so slightly!  This dress is a great example of camouflaging a problem area but still showing some skin!
Ring in that Waist!  When you have some curves but still have a nice waistline, make sure you show it off!  Don’t do baggy, you will be hiding what’s sexy!
Thin straps can make you appear larger than you are!
Instead go with a halter that will give you more coverage or a bateaux neckline – oh so stunning!  This is a case where more fabric is actually more alluring!

Twinkle Toes!  If you love sparkle but don’t want to splurge on a top or sweater that you might not wear again, go for some sparkle on the shoes!  You can take a simple dress and make it shine with just the right pump or sandal.

Faux Fur Fun!  Want to draw attention to your pretty face?  We have been seeing these colorful faux fur wraps all over the place!  It’s a fresh alternative to a pashmina.  Tie on this little piece and it can take a simple work dress directly from work to the party!
Accessories are the Spice of Life:  Textured hose and some bright sparkle jewelry (Banana Republic) are 2 more ways to add some wow!
Putting it all together:  Here is Deborah with a simple shift dress.  She just added a black faux fur wrap and some leopard gloves and she is ready to hit the town!

How to dress comfortable, casual and chic when transitioning from summer to fall

Transitioning into fall can be frustrating.  One day it’s hot, the next cool.  It’s October so you don’t want to look like you’re still wearing your summer clothes yet it’s not cold enough to break out the turtlenecks.  Time to “shop” in your closet, use one of your light weight dresses, add a few accessories or layers to transform your dress into a new outfit.  That’s what we call dressing Chic on the Cheap!

Here are a few tips on how to gently transition into fall:

  1. Wear darker, richer colors
  2. Take a simple cotton dress and add a stretch belt
  3. Tie on a light weight scarf
  4. Time to get out the boots, especially on those rainy days
Here’s a little video to show you how:

AFTER: Adding only 4 accessories makes this plain dress into an outfit!
