A leather skirt looks modern and hip.
Trying to update our casual wardrobe over 40 can be a “head scratcher” for sure. What can you add to get away from the same old, same old….
Why not try some leather? You can buy a leather dress, skirts, or pair of pants but one of the easiest ways to introduce it into your wardrobe is by purchasing a quality leather jacket.

A touch of leather makes you look Age-Amazing
A great leather jacket is like a great blazer, but edgier and therefore, more youthful.
While it’s true that leather can be expensive, you can find some wonderful pieces at consignment stores or on sale if you bargain hunt. It’s well worth it because if you buy a leather skirt or jacket in a classic style you’ll have it for many years to come.
As for color, black leather may come to mind, but be careful here as black can be too harsh and too rocker chic looking after 40, unless it has soft lines of some sort. Don’t be afraid to try a pretty color like caramel, blue, red or pink. Colored leather is extremely popular at the moment.
Another great option if you are considering trying leather is to buy a leather vest. Paired with a sassy striped sweater and scarf it can make you look modern and fun.

This black leather vest is a chic piece over 40!
- One note of caution: Don’t ever wear an outdated, bulky leather jacket. This one on the left is is too big and this woman is drowning in it compared to the one on the right.

Yes! I have a red leather jacket that I always pull out this time of year and I receive compliments every time I wear it. The jacket is a good color for me and the red aligns perfectly with the holiday season. I appreciate your words of caution about black leather–I think I’ll look for a better alternative for my next leather purchase. Thanks for the tip.
