It’s not surprising that after trends like the boyfriend jean and boyfriend blazer, outerwear would be the next garment the ladies would steal from the boys.
This trend can be excessive so make sure to balance the look with a pair of skinny pants or a slim-fitting dress. Proportion is key, otherwise you can look fat and frumpy. Here are a few great over sized coats we thought would be great for women women over 40.
| Mustard Must Have! It’s a Weekend Max Mara double breasted wool coat with slouchy styling. Love the epaulets which are spot on with the current military trend and make your shoulders look broad and the rest of you thin. Often you need some kind of detail up top to balance your body,so you don’t end up looking like you are wearing a barrel. (Buy it now from Nordstrom) |

| Red Alert!Leave it to Jill Sander to produce this simple yet stunningly elegant wool over sized coat with braclet sleeves, side slash pockets and notched lapels. It’s very 50′s inspired chic- ladylike perfection. The wide collar balances things out so you don’t look swamped in fabric, Hells help too. (Get yours now before it goes, from Saks.) |

| Blue Beauty! This strand collar A-Line coat from Ellen Tracy also has a swingy retro inspired shape. This is the perfect car coat for Fall 2012 and cobalt blue is so “in” at the moment.(Nordstrom has this in stock NOW) | ![]() |
| In the trenchesLove this twist. It’s called the Elanor Coat from Diane Von Furstenberg and what it is is a cross between a trench and one of these new full coats. To top it off, it is in one of the season’s hottest hues – Teal. This is not only a voluminous coat but a long coat. It would not be the best choice for a petite figure. I received an oversized coat as a gift from my husband a few years ago when we wre dating. IT was black and very long – went almost to my ankles – and had a detachable hood/shawl collar trimmed in fur. I found there was entirely too much fabric on my small frame. I only wore it once, and my kids teased I looked like Crela Deville. After several years sitting in my closet, I gave it away……………
Hi Deb, Well you did the right thing! Oversized coats are certainly not a trend that will be for everyone especially when it is black! (LOL…you know how we think black is one of the worst colors for over 40 women…it can age us for sure!). Getting out the items that clog our closet is one of the first steps we suggest you take to be a true Glam Gal! Sounds like you have a good idea on what looks good and not so good on you and are not afraid to take action! Good going on this one, for sure! Coats can really add up quick in a closet and take up too much room especially if you are not wearing it!
‘Too darn stinkin’ FRUMPY if ya ask this Ozark Farm Chick. I’m a size 10 and work dang hard to stay there, why would I want to look several sizes larger is beyond my sixty year old mind!
‘Just sayin’……
God bless ya’ll and have a fantabulous day from the happy hills and hollers of the Ozark Ponderosa!!! :o)
HI Nezzy, Well, you are correct for sure. Oversized does not work on everyone and is just a trend. Thanks for some your comment and your sense of humor! Always refreshing to have on our site!!! Have a great day!!!
