How to Look Cool (not Kooky) in Camouflage

Love it or hate it, camo has become a focal point in fashion.  If you think it’s too military for you, you may just need a lesson in how to style it right. Here’s what you need to remember to look Cool, not Kooky in Camouflage after 40.

1. Pair Camo with Classic Pieces

After a certain age, it can be difficult to pull off super-trendy things, like camo without looking like you are trying too hard, or worse wearing a costume. What’s the secret to wearing a trend like this that 20-somethings are buzzing about? Don’t wear it the same way they would.

This means, make sure to pair your camo with grown-up pieces, like structured blazers and tailored pants or dresses. And don’t even think about mixing the camo trend with any other current trend- that screams “fashion victim” at any age.

3. Pair Camo with Neutrals

To make your camo piece the focal point of your outfit, make the rest of your outfit neutral, and make most of those neutral shades that exist in the print itself. There’s a reason why a camo scarf looks so good with an olive dress: Olive is the main color in the print, allowing the stylish accessory to take center stage.

Since camouflage is a pattern associated with masculine clothing, create a balance in your look by adding some softer pieces. Dainty jewelry, heels, and polished-looking handbags are all fantastic examples of how to hit the perfect contrast!

Or Wear A Camo Color Only

If it’s the camo print that turns you off, try a solid camo color like this simple body-con dress and some cute accessories. This is a chic way to get the look without having to wear a busy pattern.

3. Keep the Rest of the Look Simple

To make sure your ensemble isn’t overpowering, keep the other aspects of your outfit muted. Since camo is such a statement print, it needs to be paired with quieter pieces. Nothing super-shiny, sequined or ornate. Camo looks best with soft, matte fabrics and simple, minimal accessories.

4. Try a Modern Twist on Camo

If you like the idea of camo but you are not a fan of all those dark colors then a simple dress like this might work for you. It’s a simple shirtdress with a camo-like print that makes you look twice!

  1. Want! Where can I buy these items?? I cannot even make out the brand names so I can track them down myself. Please help. I love the dress, camel blazer, and booties in both pics.

  2. Good post, but not a look. I will sport any time soon! I know some ladies who will do it and look great, but so not up my alley!

    1. I’m with you, Jan. I can admire it on others, but I know my style and camo would not work unless perhaps it was a pair of cute camo ballet flats. It would have to be subtle.

It's your life. Make it Fabulous!
