2 Chic Ways I Cover My Arms in a Sleeveless Dress (Without Ruining the Look)
Some days, I love a sleeveless dress. Other days… not so much. It’s not the dress—it’s just that I don’t always feel like showing my arms. And I know I’m not the only one.
So instead of skipping my favorite dresses, I’ve found a couple of simple things I can throw on that give me coverage without ruining the look.
These are the two easy options that work beautifully. And they completely change the feel of the same dress.
The Dress I Started With

This drop waist midi from Talbots is the kind of dress I’m always drawn to—light, feminine, and easy to wear. It has a beautiful silhouette, charming print, and is perfect for warm weather.
But on days when it’s a little chilly, or I’d rather not have my arms front and center, adding the right layer makes all the difference.
Look #1: The Soft, Feminine Layer (Lightweight Shrug)

If I want something a little softer, I’ll throw on a lightweight shrug.
What I like about it is that it gives me coverage without hiding the shape of the dress. You can still see the waist, the modern silhouette—everything that made me like it in the first place.
Why it works:
- Lightweight and breathable
- Keeps the look soft and feminine
- Doesn’t overwhelm the dress
- Adds a pop of color
What I paired it with:
I went with gold sandals and a textured wicker clutch—it keeps the look feeling fresh and classy.

When I wear it:
Lunch, dinner, showers, or anytime I want to feel a little more dressed up.
Look #2: The Casual, Modern Layer (Denim Jacket)

dress | denim jacket | bag | shoes | earrings
If I want the outfit to feel more relaxed, I’ll throw on a short- sleeved denim jacket.
It changes the whole vibe right away—makes the dress feel easier, more everyday, and a little less dressed up.
Why it works:
- Adds structure and balance
- Covers the part of the arms that matters
- Makes the outfit feel casual and youthful
- Works with almost any dress
What I paired it with:
I kept the same bag but switched it to a long chain for a more casual look, and added woven espadrilles for that easy, laid-back summer feel.

When I wear it:
Weekends, travel days, casual outings—anytime I want the dress to feel a little less done.
Which Look Works Best?
It really depends on the look you’re going for.
Want something soft and dressy? Go with a lightweight shrug.
Want something casual and modern? A denim jacket (long-sleeve or short-sleeve is your best friend.)
Both give you coverage—but they create a completely different feel.

You look great in all your clothing! How do you stay slim? I am over 70, and it is so difficult to lose weight, especially my “menopause belly.”
Hi Brenlara, I have always believed in moderation instead of dieting. It’s really about common sense and balancing how much and what you eat. Every day I make sure to eat some fruit (usually at breakfast with yogart, cinnamon and walnuts), vegetables at dinner, with some carbs (rice or potatoes- not too much) and some protein. Lunch is an open face sandwich with turkey or a small vegetable quiche) The hardest thing for me is to get enough protein- I need to make sure I’m eating enough because it builds muscle and it keeps me full. When I go to a restaurant I usually order a big salad with chicken, but I’m not fanatical. If I want pasta or a steak the odd time, I’ll have it. Also, If I eat more one day, I try to eat less the next. I do eat desserts or have a glass of wine sometimes. It’s no life to restrict yourself from certain foods and feel miserable. I have been doing pilates 4x a week for years. I find it relaxing and it keeps me toned. The key is consistency but if I miss a day, I miss a day.I don’t beat myself up over it. I also try to get out and walk when the weather is good. I enjoy doing this early morning when all is calm. That’s it. I’m simply conscious about what I’m eating and how much I’m moving in general- nothing extreme. Hope that helps. Cheers, Deb
Thanks for the reminders of how to cover my arms without losing the dress! The linked article showing more ways is just as helpful. You reminded me that I have two cropped sweaters that I can use for this purpose!
Hi Sandra, That’s great! I love it when I find ways to wear things in my closet I had forgotten about. Sleeveless dresses make sense in summer, but step inside an air conditioned restaurant or get a windy day and I need something to cover up that is cute not frumpy! Thanks for stopping by! Cheers, Deb
Beautiful shrug! I love those shoes in light blue, wish they made a 5, I have a similar pair in navy but those are amazing,
Hi Bonnie, I agree! Those are some of the nicest shoes I have seen in a long time and they are very comfy too. Size 5- wow -what pretty petite feet you must have!
