How Do I Find my Face Shape?

If you don’t know your face shape, it’s pretty straightforward to figure out. All you need to do is use a measuring tape to measure the length and width of your face. These measurements will help you determine which face shape category you fall into. Although everyone’s bone structure is unique, most faces fall into four general categories: round (circular), square (rectangular), oval (oblong), or heart (triangular). • A Quick Trick:

Stand directly in front of the mirror, and pull loose hair away from your face. Using a washable utensil—lipstick, soap, or a dry-erase marker will work—trace the outline of the shape of your face on the mirror’s surface. Take a step back, and try to match the outline of your face shape with the one most similar to yours. Or….

• Use an App to Find Your Face Shape

If you’re struggling to figure out your face shape, there are a few apps you can download on your phone to help you determine that. Simply go to the app store and type in “face shape.” Then download the app. Make sure to pull your hair back,  stand somewhere with good lighting, and look straight ahead. Once you have your face shape, you can delete the app.

Are You a Round Face Shape?

Round faces are characterized by a smooth, circular shape free of harsh angles. Your jawline is round and full, your face is about as broad as it is long, and your rounded cheekbones are the widest part of the face. If you’re using measurements, your two measurements should nearly match up. Meaning the length of your face is similar to the width.

Are You a Square Face Shape?

A square face shape is distinguished by a broad forehead and square, strong jawline, with the forehead, cheekbones, and jaw being the same width. The sides of your face are straight, and your hairline is most likely straight. For a square face, you might have similar measurements as someone with a round face, but the angles of your face are sharper and straight rather than soft and rounded.

Are You an Oval Face Shape?

For oval and oblong faces, (mine is oval), your face is longer than wide with a softly rounded jawline and hairline. Your face is free of harsh angles and is widest at the cheekbones. Ovals have a more narrow face. Your measurements will show that your face is longer than it is wide.

Are You a Heart Face Shape?

Heart and triangular face shapes are characterized by a broad forehead, long, pointed jawline, and narrow chin. Heart shape faces resembling an inverted triangle. Your forehead is the widest part of your face or the same width as your cheekbones; your chin is the narrowest part. Heart-shaped faces are sometimes characterized by a widow’s peak, but you can still have a heart-shaped face without a widow’s peak.

Know that opposites attract. Stick to sunglasses with angular lines to balance out your naturally soft round features. Sharp, square-angled frames like classic Rayban Wayfarers look great. A  fun pair of square sunglasses or rectangular frames work well too. Vintage-looking cat-eye shapes will also add definition to delicate features. You’ll want to steer clear of round or oval shapes, which will only add extra width to a round face shape.

Best Sunglasses for Square Face

Square faces call for softening up harsh angles. Combat boxy silhouettes with curvy shapes like oval glasses or always-in-style aviators. Your best bet is a pair of round sunglasses. Cat eyes and trendy rimless frames will also soften square faces. If you’re feeling fun, feel free to play around with oversized frames. Steer clear of frames that are too small, as they will get lost on a square face.

Oval faces are the envy of all other shapes because they can wear just about any frame style!  Oval and oblong faces do need to keep proportion in mind. Petite oval faces should stick with chic smaller frames, while longer, broader ones can experiment with oversized styles. The oval shape can pull off aviator and wayfarer styles as well.

It’s fine to go ahead and wear this style of sunglasses if you want to make a style statement!  Choosing the perfect sunglasses by face shape is just a starting point to help you look your best, but in today’s world, there are no hard and fast rules for which sunglasses you can and cannot wear!

Generally,  eyewear should fit snugly but not too tight. Sunglasses should not be digging into your temples when you smile, and your frames shouldn’t crush your cheeks. If they do, you might need to choose a different frame shape. Overall, your sunglasses should feel comfortable and protect your eyes. Although the style is important, UV protection is key when selecting a pair of shades.

Should I Wear Oversized Sunglasses?

Oversized sunglasses (larger than traditional sunglasses) are a trendy fashion accessory that make you look instantly chic.  You don’t have to worry about them overwhelming your face because they come in many different sizes and frame thicknesses. You’ll find a wide range of oversize sunglasses styles, from round to cat’s eye to rectangular, to suit every face shape. I own a few pairs, and when I want a really glamorous look or a more fun look, I reach for my dramatic oversize shades! I’m wearing them above.
