Spring and Summer 2026: 7 Modern Shoe Trends to Update Your Outfits

Whenever a reader asks me how to look instantly more current without buying a whole new wardrobe, I always tell them the same thing: start with your shoes. It’s the quickest style update there is. Keeping that in mind, I’ve spent the last few weeks looking at what’s trending for spring and summer 2026 shoes, and I’m sharing the modern styles I actually like and plan to wear myself.

1. The Power of Pastels

For 2026, I’m not talking about those bright sugary, “Easter egg” pastels that can feel a bit juvenile. This year’s pastels are soft, dusty and sophisticated.” I’m finding shoes in colors like muted lavender, sage green, buttery lemon, and a gorgeous “serene” blue. These colors act almost like neutrals because they’re so soft, but they add such a refreshing pop to a midlife wardrobe.

What to look for

Look for these colors in high quality materials like suede or matte leather. A pastel suede loafer or a soft sage kitten heel looks incredibly expensive. Avoid anything too shiny or “patent” in a pastel, as that can start to look a bit like a dress up shoe. You want the finish to be soft and matte.

The trick to wearing pastels over 50 is to pair them with “grounding” colors. If you have a pair of dusty lavender flats, try wearing them with charcoal gray trousers or dark wash denim. A sage green slide looks stunning with a cream linen dress. It’s all about that contrast!

2. The Return of the Square Toe

Square toes are back in a big way, and I couldn’t be happier. The real beauty of a square toe is the extra room in the toe box. As we get older, many of us deal with things like bunions, hammer toes, or just general foot “widening” (it happens to the best of us!). A square toe allows your toes to splay naturally rather than being crushed into a triangle. It’s a modern, high-fashion look that is secretly as comfortable as a wide-width orthopedic shoe

What to look for

Look for square toe mules, loafers, or even ankle boots. The “chisel” toe is particularly popular in 2026. It’s a bit more tapered than a blocky square, which keeps it looking sophisticated rather than clunky.

3. Woven and Perforated Shoes

There’s something so “artisan” about a woven shoe, isn’t there? It feels like something you’d pick up in a little boutique in Italy. For 2026, designers are giving us the best of both worlds by using both classic leather and buttery suede for these styles. While leather gives a polished, crisp look, the suede versions add a softness that is so forgiving on our feet. They’re using laser cutting technology to create some stunning patterns that are basically wearable art.

What to look for

Look for “basket weave” patterns in either a sturdy calfskin leather or a soft, velvety suede. Perforated oxfords are also huge right now. These are a godsend for summer because the leather provides structure, but those little perforations (especially in breathable suede!) offer the coverage of a closed shoe with the airflow of a sandal.

4. Glove Shoes

Glove shoes sound a little weird when you first hear about them. These are shoes that fit like, well, a glove, with minimal hardware and maximum spring comfort.

What to Look For

Glove shoes are typically ballet flats or loafers made from super soft, pliable leather that molds to your foot. For spring 2026, I’m seeing them in gorgeous light neutrals like cream, beige, soft gray, and even pale yellow or mint. These colors are perfect for transitioning your wardrobe into warmer weather.

Look for styles with a slight elastic insert at the top line because that’s what creates that “glove-like” fit without being too tight. The sole should be flexible but still have some cushioning. The toe can be rounded, squared, or slightly pointed, all work well for spring. Metallics in silver and rose gold are also very on trend if you want something that adds a bit more interest to your spring outfits.

5. Elevated Slide Sandals

Slides aren’t just for the pool anymore, ladies! For 2026, the slide has gone high fashion. I’ve been seeing padded leather straps for a modern look or sculptural buckles.

Buttery suede is a total lifesaver for your feet because it’s so flexible and molds to your foot instantly, especially in those gorgeous “sophisticated pastels” like sage or lavender that look so high-end. If you want a more polished vibe, go for a leather slide with trendy puffy straps.

What to look for

The biggest update for 2026 is the moulded footbed. Look for slides with built-in arch support and a contoured heel cup. This is so important because it keeps the sandal from “clacking” against your heel and provides the stability you need to stay comfortable all day long.

6. Espadrille Wedges

If you haven’t worn espadrille wedges in a while, let me tell you that the spring shoe trends 2026 has brought them back.

What to Look For

The spring 2026 espadrille wedge is more refined than the versions I remember. The biggest change I’ve seen is the “Flatform” or Mid-Wedge. This is where the sole gives you a little lift but stays relatively level from heel to toe. The upper can be canvas, suede, or soft leather in spring appropriate colors.

Also, look for styles with a secure ankle strap or a “glove” fit over the bridge of the foot so you aren’t “clawing” with your toes to keep them on!

7. The Modern Slingback

For a long time, slingbacks felt a bit like a “work-only” shoe—something stiff you’d wear with a suit and couldn’t wait to kick off. But for Spring and Summer 2026, they have been completely reimagined to be the ultimate “bridge” shoe for our wardrobes.

What to look for

We’ve all dealt with that annoying “strap snap” where the back of the shoe keeps sliding off, right? This year, look for elasticized straps or a tiny, adjustable buckle so you can get a custom fit that actually stays put. I’m also seeing a move toward almond or “chisel” square toes.

How to Maintain Your Spring Shoes

Quality spring shoes deserve proper maintenance. Spring presents specific challenges: rain, outdoor events, and changing temperatures all affect how long your shoes are going to last!

Leather Care

After outdoor spring events, brush away dirt and debris. Apply leather conditioner monthly to counter spring drying and prevent cracking. If caught in rain, stuff with newspaper and air dry away from heat. Store with shoe trees during humid spring weather to maintain shape.

Suede Maintenance

Suede requires particular attention in spring due to rain exposure. Apply protective spray before first wear and reapply every few weeks. Keep a suede brush and eraser accessible for grass stains and dirt from outdoor events. Allow complete drying before brushing if exposed to spring showers.

Woven and Perforated Leather

Dirt and pollen accumulate in weaves and perforations. Use a soft toothbrush to clean between weaves after outdoor activities. Allow adequate air circulation between wears, particularly during humid spring weather.

White and Light Colored Shoes

White shoes require consistent maintenance. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth after each wear. For stubborn stains, a magic eraser works effectively (test in areas no one else will see first). You may also want to add a protective spray to repel spring dirt and grass stains.

Sandal Care

After wearing, wipe the footbeds to remove any oil and dirt, preventing buildup and keeping them fresh. For leather sandals, you can condition the straps regularly to prevent cracking from spring sun exposure. Make sure to clean between the toes and straps with a soft brush.

Building Your Spring and Summer Shoe Wardrobe

Focus on filling the gaps in your current collection based on your actual spring and summer schedule.

If you attend a lot of outdoor events: Invest in espadrille wedges or block heel sandals that won’t sink into grass.

If you’re mostly running errands and doing casual activities: Woven leather flats or slide sandals will get the most wear.

If you have dressy spring and summer occasions: Kitten heel slingbacks or strappy sandals in a neutral color work for multiple events.

If you want one statement piece: A pair of Mary Janes or mules in a spring pastel adds personality without being too trendy.

  1. I read this yesterday, then popped into local Walmart today and found their Time&Tru woven Mary Janes which look so much like the ones you show above. I also picked up some square toe pink “sneakers” which are super cute! Enjoy reading your posts.

    1. Hi Lisa! That’s great. I know when I simply update my shoes I feel so much more modern. Shoes can instantly elevate your style!

  2. I love those cute denim slingbacks on you! Those have my name on them except for lower heel since I’m very petite . If you are under 5′, should you wear at least a small heel of some kind? I have some suede mule/slingbacks in nude I have worn to death all winter (size 5 ) that have an inch and a half block stacked heel and always try to look for small heel at least. Should I try flat? Thanks for your advice? Also do you find the lower vamp and pointed toe comfortable in this pair you have on? They are super cute!

    1. Hi Bonnie, Heel height is a personal preference. I pretty much wear flats and low heels these days. They are so much more comfortable and I think they look chic with all the cropped ankle jeans. These denim slingbacks are Aerosole so they arecomfy but my favorite are the JJill navy suede slingbacks with the squared off toe. I wear these all the time.
